Your next road bike might look like an airplane
1 hr 21 min

The UCI has a lot of silly technical rules, but there’s one that isn’t on the books that could potentially keep a lot of riders from crashing. It doesn’t have anything to do with the bikes themselves, though; it would apply to bottles and cages. Existing rules for aero tube shapes are also about to change either way and how exactly that will affect the shape of future bikes is anything but certain. Will your next bike sprout a seatpost out of its top tube? Will road bikes look like triathlon bikes? Maybe, or maybe not.

139: A New Coaching Model: Creating Better Athletes Through Our Virtual Performance Center
We believe modern coaching doesn’t optimally fulfill the needs of the modern athlete. That’s why we’re introducing our community, education, and coaching membership, Fast Talk Laboratories.   So often athletes are given templated training plans. But what if he or she gets sick? Or work gets stressful? That athlete will likely do more harm than good simply pushing through and sticking to the plan. In response to that methodology, we’ve created a virtual performance center, a place for the insightful athlete to be guided to their best self.   We have collected the many tools available to modern athletes in one place, offering curated and validated knowledge—through articles, videos, workshops, webinars, forums, and the list goes on—from some of the finest minds in sport science: Dr. Stephen Seiler, Dr. Stephen Cheung, Julie Young, Colby Pearce, Grant Holicky, Jess Elliott, to name a few. We’ll be adding new contributors all the time, and you can be sure they’ll also bring clarity and sophistication to their contributions.  Let’s detail our Listener, Library, Live, and Laboratory member levels.  Listener: We are now producing transcripts of every new Fast Talk podcast episode—plus our catalog of over 135 existing episodes and 27 Cycling in Alignment episodes. What does that mean for Listeners? Searchable podcast episodes, references, and resources. And, of course, you can read along or scan ahead, if you happen to be a faster reader than listener.   Listeners will also begin to receive our weekly newsletter, which will keep them up to date on new episodes, special guests, and opportunities to send in questions for new Q&A episodes. We also have plans to periodically release a few of our most popular training science videos and articles—but only for members.   Our next membership level unlocks a whole library of content, which is why we’re calling it our Library Membership. For our Library Members, we have created training science articles, a whole library of video content, and a moderated forum. This is content like the fundamentals of sports nutrition from Head Coach Ryan Kohler and a workshop on why cold temperatures affect performance from Dr. Stephen Cheung. The Forum is a place to discuss recent episodes, ask questions, and get answers from Trevor, Ryan, and our very smart members.   Live membership is really the heart and soul of what we’re offering. This level includes all the features we’ve already introduced, plus a whole suite of Live Events including social group rides, structured live workouts, live Q&A sessions, and live webinars. Trevor’s and Ryan’s experience in training centers and the group-style approach will shine. This level also includes group coaching and a monthly question answered.  Our Laboratory Membership will open in January. This is our premier coaching level, and of course it includes all the benefits of the lower levels. We believe it’s a vast improvement over existing coaching programs. Our athletes and listeners are not typical. They are intelligent, motivated, and they don’t need email nannying, which is what we often see in endurance coaching. They also don’t really need templated training plans, which we believe are counterproductive for higher-level athletes.   Instead, our Laboratory Membership is a new concept that we call Endurance Mentorship. What does that mean? Well, it’s based on the idea that you already know the basics—but wouldn’t it be great to have an elite coach to answer your questions? Plus, with periodic testing and guidance, you’ll experience the best of what Fast Talk Laboratories has to offer as a virtual performance center. Learn more about your ad choices. Life Beyond the Peloton with Jamie Anderson & Bernard Moerman
In this special Telstra Connected Cycling webinar we are joined by Belgian cycling legend Bernard Moerman and Professor Jamie Anderson to talk about the theme of transitions. We explore why so many professional cyclists struggle with transitioning to a life after the peloton. On the flipside,  we also talk about how a bunch of former Australian professional cyclists have found their way into influential positions in the European cycling scene. In the last part of the interview we chat about the phenomenon of “Corporate Athletes” who throw themselves back into competitive sport after a long hiatus – and why doing so can help people to thrive in so many aspects of their lives. Based in Belgium, Bernard Moerman is a leadership mentor, career coach and storyteller who helps people to realise their inner potential. Prior to shifting his focus to working with business leaders, he spent more than two decades as a talent scout & manager, performance coach and Professional Cycling Team Director. See Bernard’s recent TED Talk here: https://youtu.be/p68eKVnu5_w  Jamie Anderson is Professor of Leadership & Strategic Management at Antwerp Management School, an executive coach and mentor to many former professional cyclists. Jamie is also a competitive Masters cyclist who has achieved podium results at UCI World Series Granfondo Events and many other world-level one-day and multi-day races for amateurs. Living in Belgium, he is currently European Masters Champion (M5) for the Individual Time Trial.  See Jamie’s TED Talk about work, life & cycling here: https://youtu.be/tmc6HohWVCs

Valgren interview and report cards for NTT and EF Pro Cycling
In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast, brought to you by Sportful and Pinarello, we speak to Michael Valgren about his 2020 season, his time at NTT Pro Cycling and his move to EF Pro Cycling ahead of next year’s campaign.   The Danish rider spent two years on the African team and never quite managed to replicate the 2018 form that saw him win Amstel Gold Race but he talks about his motivation, why things didn’t work out and how he will fit into EF Pro Cycling’s roster. As well as hearing from Valgren, we also start our yearly report card analysis of the WorldTour teams and as Valgren features – and because there’s no real method – we start by taking a look at both NTT and EF.   NTT actually started the season incredibly well. They came into 2020 with arguably one of the weakest rosters of the WorldTour teams but they won six races by the time Paris-Nice concluded. They dominated a number of online races during lockdown but once racing resumed they struggled. Giacomo Nizzolo won the European Championships and Ben O’Connor took a fine stage in the Giro d’Italia but there was very little for them to celebrate.   They ended the year with eight wins but the season was really dominated by sponsorship issues and once more the underperformance of several key riders. Sponsorship issues created uncertainty and tension between the management before Assos stepped in to help the team going forward. We analyze the season for NTT, before Procycling’s editor Edward Picking – a former teacher no less – provides the team with a report card grade.   Then we head to EF, and the American team that went from 17 wins in 2019 to 17 wins this year. There was no Monument win this time around but the team were aggressive in every format of racing – they won stages in all three Grand Tours and finished on the podium in the Vuelta a España. They also won the Critérium du Dauphiné with one of the best days of racing we saw all year, and even if you strip out the wins they took outside of the WorldTour – for example, the wins in Colombia – they were impressive. Our presenters look back on the year for the team before Mr Pickering provides his end of season grade.   The Cyclingnews Podcast is brought to you by Sportful and Pinarello.    Sponsor message   Born in the Italian Dolomites, Sportful has been making athletes faster, more efficient and better protected since 1972.   Official apparel supplier to Bora-Hansgrohe. 29: Daniel Holloway: Surviving the Six Days
Daniel Holloway is a professional cyclist who races for Texas Roadhouse and is a 20 x US National Champion, a Pan Am Games gold medalist, and a member of the US National Long team for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. I met Daniel when he was a junior racing on the track, sometime around 2004. Years later, when I had the opportunity to race some of the European six days, I needed a partner, and Daniel ended up being the man for the job. He was one of the youngest riders in the field at our first Six Day in Dortmund, and I was one of the older riders in the peloton. I think it is quite accurate to say we really had no idea what the hell we were doing. Together we stumbled our way through 4 seasons of racing Sixes, World Cups, and World Championships together. We had wins, crashes, DNF’s, lots of laughs, and one moment that was pretty close to a fistfight. I thought having Daniel on the show would be the perfect excuse to tell some entertaining stories, and also to help my audience understand the archaic and iconic world of European Six Day racing.  Texas Roadhouse Cycling Team | Elite Bicycle Racing Team https://texasroadhousecycling.com PEZ Talk: Six Day Man Colby Pearce – PezCycling News https://pezcyclingnews.com/amp/interviews/pez-talk-six-day-man-colby-pearce/ The Time Capsule: Colby Pearce - An American Team in the Six Days https://www.veloveritas.co.uk/2011/02/11/colby-pearce-time-capsule/ Six Day Cycling - Hong Kong 2019 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aoN8XDHM4c
