The Big Boo Cast, Episode 207
1 hr 4 min

We recorded this episode earlier this week when we were in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, so it's probably no surprise that we talk a little bit about our trip. Unfortunately, though, we recorded before we had the feast of our adult lives at Ree's P-Town restaurant Monday night, so we'll for sure have to talk about that next week. Perhaps we will have recovered from all the deliciousness by then.

We do cover some football ground this week - what with the Aggies defeating the Bulldogs and all - and we also answer one of your questions about the early days of motherhood. Plus, I share five favorites - NOW WITH THEME MUSIC - and Melanie tells us all about a recent shopping trip. FUN APLENTY, it is.

Y'all enjoy!

Healthy relationships with sugar and Social Media with Wendy Speake
Hey Friends! Joining me on the show today is author Wendy Speake, who is passionate about pointing others to Christ through the power of storytelling. She’s written many wonderful books on how we can help take back our lives from things that have power over us. So it’s safe to say we covered a lot of ground in our conversation, including how setting healthy boundaries with both sugar and social media can lead us to a deeper connection with God and how the stress of 2020 has impacted mothers especially. Plus, I’m sharing my best advice for handling overwhelm this season and the seemingly endless stream of information and opinions we’ve been bombarded with over the past few months. Things we discussed: 1. How staying connected online can keep us distant from the ones who matter most 2. How triggering situations affect relationships and lines of communication between moms and their kids 3. How social media can act as a crutch to ignore our relationship with God Favorite quotes: 1. God never asked us for a sugar sacrifice. He asked us for a living sacrifice. So we lay down sugar in order to feast on Him like we’re fasting but the whole goal is feasting. We’re taking a break from what we usually shove in our mouths, in our lives to say I want to consume you Lord. 2. The fast is so much more than a detox because we are lifting our eyes to see Christ, to see our people and then to see others. 3. If your device is your vice, if your device is divisive. It is separating you from God and others in real life. Take those details to the Lord. 4. It’s possible that when we turn to our pantries and our freezers to get us through our stress, that is actually causing us more stress. In this episode I answer this question: How do you not let information overwhelm you? (49:17) Great things we discussed: 1. Wendy Speake (Website and Facebook) 2. 40 Day Social Media Fast 3. Behold Him 4. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 5. The God Dare 6. Muscle milk chocolate powder 7. Mrs. Doubtfire 8. First Love 9. The 2020 Christmas Gift Guide 10. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! 103. Forgiving What You Can't Forget (with Lysa TerKeurst)
Forgiveness is certainly not the easiest topic to cover for anyone, but what if the ultimate betrayal was laid at your feet. How would you react then? For Lysa TerKeurst it led to authoring a book all about using forgiveness to heal and grow after a terrible experience. Lysa found out several years ago that her husband was being unfaithful. Not just once or twice, but had been repeatedly unfaithful along with having a substance abuse problem. When she found out she was devastated. The pain was so terrible it would literally stop her in her tracks no matter where she was. She was having panic attacks and anxiety flare ups and she was just lost to the pain. So she made an appointment to see her counselor and from there she truly began to heal. You see she had a very “little girl” view of how forgiveness works and it hadn’t grown up with her. Not that she thinks that simply forgiving her husband of his faults would have saved them any of the pain that they went through, but if her sense of forgiveness had matured, she may have saved herself from some of that pain. Listen as she shares her story and how it influenced her need to write her latest book, Forgiving What You Can’t Forget. She’s truly baring it all and sharing how we can use these tactics throughout the holiday season as well. Forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. So stop holding yourself back from giving it. In This Episode: [01:30] Welcome Lysa TerKeurst to the show and hear more about her and her family. [03:43] Why she chose to write her most recent book. [07:18] What caused her extreme sadness and anger and inability to forgive. [09:24] Learn what her therapist did to help her reach a point that she could forgive. [13:01] Why forgiveness is a gift that you can receive for yourself. [14:56] What happens when you stuff pain down and refuse to acknowledge it. [17:22] Lysa’s first memories of forgiveness. [20:00] What did she do after acknowledging her pain? [26:13] Lysa’s advice for the woman who is living in their pain. [29:29] It doesn’t make you an unforgiving person to draw boundaries. [30:43] Where she is now after writing this book. Santa or No Santa :: Ep 306
You know who is coming to town. The big man in the red suit is everywhere this time of year and each of us grew up with different traditions on how to engage with and celebrate Santa. My assistant Sarah-Jane and I chat about what it was like for each of us growing up with and without Santa and how we acknowledge the jolly yuletide figure with our kids without taking the focus off Jesus. Sarah-Jane shares how her family adopted a separate holiday in December, Saint Nicholas Day, and I talk about playing the “Santa Game” with my kids. Wherever you fall on the “Santa spectrum,” we hope this conversation gives you grace to celebrate Christmas with your family with or without Santa being a major part (and give that same grace to others). “Isn't it so great that God doesn't work the same way as Santa? It’s because we're so naughty that we got the gift of Jesus. It's the opposite. So I would, as a teaching moment to reemphasize the glorious grace of Jesus. Instead of thinking, I can't do Santa because it takes away from the grace of Jesus, the good news is we have a different option.” Links Mentioned: * Saint Nicholas Center * Veggietales- Saint Nicolas: A Story of Joyful Giving * Buck Denver: Who is Santa Claus? * Light ‘Em Up * The Star from Afar * The Shepherd on the Search * Using Santa to Teach Grace [BLOG POST] Featured Sponsors: * Skylight Frames --get $10 off your purchase of a Skylight Frame when you go to and enter code DMA. * Story Worth -- Give your loved ones the gift of spending time together, wherever you live, with StoryWorth. Be The Bridge 213 - Athletes & Activism with Justin Holiday
Description: In the volatile year of 2020 we’ve seen uprisings that have spurred tense feelings and emotions causing Christians to be split on issues related to social justice.  But, this is also a year where athletes have used their platform in ways that are reminiscent of the civil rights era.  Fists in the air are coupled with kneeling during the national anthem and sporting events by sports professionals in every sport from basketball to tennis, NASCAR to Formula racing, and everywhere in between.  Be the Bridge Founder Latasha Morrison was able to have a conversation with a Christian athlete who not only has a heart for rectifying social and economic inequities but has placed himself on the frontlines of the fight for social justice.  His name is Justin Holiday, the shooting guard / small forward for the Indiana Pacers. Quotes: “We didn’t grow up watching the news.  When things happened we knew how to get in the word. We knew how to pray and that’s what we did.” - Justin Holiday “As much as I wanted to be away from the news and not see certain things, one, with social media it’s gonna happen but two I needed to see that, I needed to not keep myself away from that.” - Justin Holiday “I don’t have my children on social media. I wanna protect my children from nasty comments” - Justin Holiday “Don’t make yourself less worthy than you should be.  You’re a child of God.” - Justin Holiday LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE Podcast link: handles/links: Instagram: @LatashaMorrisonTwitter: @LatashaMorrisonFacebook: Hashtag: #bethebridge --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast.
