Play episode · 59 min

Architects, educators and curators Rahul Mehrotra and Kaiwan Mehta talk to host Pavan Srinath about the ideas behind the ongoing State of Housing – Aspirations, Imaginaries and Realities in India exhibition at the Bangalore International Centre.

Rahul, Kaiwan and Ranjith Hoskote curated the State of Housing exhibition in 2018 as a traveling exhibition, which is now at BIC in Bangalore for the month of September, 2020. The naturally ventilated gallery is open to the public on all days.

If you are in Bangalore and would like to schedule a visit, write to operations (at) bangaloreinternationalcentre (dot) org. Learn more about the exhibition at the BIC website, and you can also attend the online screening of the film ‘A Place to Live’ by Sanjay Shah on the website during the month of September, 2020.

On Episode 52 of BIC Talks, Rahul and Kaiwan discuss how State of Housing came about, what key questions the project seeks to answer, and they share glimpses of what various components of the exhibition offer to visitors – be they architects, people in government, urban governance researchers, or interested citizens and urban residents.

Rahul Mehrotra is an architect, urbanist and educator. He is Professor of Urban Design and Planning at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and is the Founder Principal of RMA Architects in Mumbai.

Kaiwan Mehta is a theorist and critic in the fields of visual culture, architecture, and city studies. He is the Managing Editor of the art and architecture magazine DOMUS India and is a faculty member at CEPT University in Ahmedabad.

The Exhibition is supported by RMZ Foundation, Brigade Group and Kohler.

Hafta 298: Hyderabad floods, the TRPs scam, and the Tanishq ad
Help us understand what you like, or dislike, about NL Hafta before it goes behind the paywall again. Take the survey here.  This week on NL Hafta, Newslaundry’s Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Raman Kirpal, and Jayashree Arunachalam are joined by journalist Sudipto Mondal. The conversation kicks off with the panelists discussing the Hyderabad floods. Jayashree talks about how flooding is often an annual problem in some states but it’s never solved because this isn’t a “sexy” issue. Moving on to the TRP scam, Abhinandan says he’s “never seen media reporting about the media so much ever.” On how journalists have come together to condemn Republic, Sudipto questions the credibility of these journalists, asking: “Where did straightforward journalism go?” The discussion shifts to advertisers choosing not to support “toxic” news channels and the backlash to the Tanishq ad. Manisha talks about how, in some cases, it’s the media that “creates” this outrage, and explains her issues with the phrase “social media outrage”. Jayashree and Manisha also think that Tanishq withdrawing the ad denies the reality of mixed families. “What kind of message is this for young interfaith couples?” Manisha asks. On Bollywood producers acting against some news channels for irresponsible reporting, Abhinandan thinks the “pushback is needed”. The panel also talks about the Shiv Sena contesting the Assembly election in Bihar, the Maharashtra governor’s letter to Uddhav Thackeray, and a lot more. Listen up! Yuddha Season Finale: Cities of Victory: The Deccan Military Revolution and the Fall of Vijayanagara (feat. Srinivas Reddy)
In our Season 1 finale, we look at the saga of how an unlikely coalition of warring sultanates came to destroy the might of Vijayanagara. We begin with the Battle of Raichur in 1520, in which Vijayanagara's Krishna Deva Raya inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Bijapur sultanate. Over the half-century after Raichur, Bijapur and the other sultanates would learn bitter lessons, creating an unparalleled military revolution that blended the best of European and Indian innovations. On 23 January 1565, they would meet the armies of Vijayanagara in the climactic Battle of Talikota, one of the most epochal encounters in Indian history. Language and translation with Jayashree Joshi
Recently in Puliyabaazi podcast from IVM, I heard a nice answer to a classic question, "what is the difference between language an dialect?" The answer was, "A language is a dialect with a gun in hand". All though the conversation had political and historical bend, i was super fascinated it. To discuss what is translation and how is it done and other smaller nuances of language, I have none other than Jayashree Hari Joshi with us on Audiogyan. Jayashree studied German at the JNU in New Delhi and also taught German after receiving her MA. She has been working at the Goethe Institute since 1996, was a program officer for twenty years, and since 2016 has been the Head of the institute's library in Mumbai. In addition to the Indian languages Marathi, Hindi and Sanskrit, she is fluent in English and German. She has translated German poems and plays into Hindi, Marathi and English. She also writes poetry in Marathi, which is regularly published. She has translated plays, poems, short stories novels and children's and youth literature from English and German into Hindi and Marathi. With such a huge body of work, I am just try and ask her few questions with my limited capacity and leave it to her to enlighten us. Questions * What does translation mean to you? How has it changed over time? Is translation a skill or an art? * The legendary Hindi critic Namwar Singh has commented on Hindi language and it's a journey in the 20th century. Is there an equivalent theory about the grammar and aesthetics of Marathi poetry? * Ashok Shahane said all languages were born out of verses and songs. This is not the case with Marathi. What is your response to that? * Is there any recognizable pattern w.r.t language that you have observed in the last 20 years when it comes to literature? Who and what defines "Praman Bhasha"? * How do you retain the original author's sense and spirit, the spirit that resides in the original author's creative reasons for using a precise word or a phrase? What is your definition of ambiguity and how do you resolve that? * Who are the translator you admire and why? * Jayashree Joshi's Profile - https://www.goethe.de/ins/in/en/kul/sup/soc/sst/u10.html * Ganesh Vispute - https://www.akshardhara.com/en/2539__ganesh-vispute * Mugdha Karnik - https://www.amazon.in/Books-Mugdha-Karnik/s?rh=n%3A976389031%2Cp_27%3AMugdha+Karnik * Prafull Shiledar - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prafull_Shiledar * Ranjit Hoskote - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranjit_Hoskote * Vishnu Khare - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu_Khare * Shanta Gokhale - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanta_Gokhale * Kavya ghruha - https://www.facebook.com/KavyaGrih/

555: Stubble Burning Worsens Delhi Air Pollution, But Is There A Plan?
Delhi-NCR's air pollution is spiking again from poor to hazardous levels, as Punjab and Haryana recorded a higher number of stubble burning incidents this season so far, compared to the same period last year. As of 19th October, different parts of the capital recorded pollution levels between 150-300, with the winds from the northwest bringing pollutants from farm fires and exacerbating the already poor air quality in the city. It's the same story year after year, but is there any plan to address it? Recently, even the SC had to step in and appoint a one-man panel consisting of Justice Lokur to monitor state initiatives to curb stubble burning, while the Delhi government and the Centre are looking at 'Pusa Decomposer' — a fungi capsule developed by the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) to prevent stubble burning. But how does it work and will it help? Tune in to The Big Story! 28. Marichjhapi Massacre
A group of beleaguered refugees arrive on an uninhabited island in the Sundarbans to create a new life for themselves, only to have their dreams crushed by government sponsored caste violence. Listen to our latest episode to learn about a massacre, almost worse than the anti-muslim pogrom in Gujrat (2002) or the anti-sikh genocide (1984), but very little talked about.  Check out The Pod Store by Aman Seth: 1.
