We're exploring the intersection of the enneagram, our jiu-jitsu, and our personality types. Does our personality type impact how we show up in our jiu-jitsu? Can understanding our personalities and learning which areas need development can make our jiu-jitsu better?
According to truity.com, the Enneagram is a system of personality typing that describes patterns in how people interpret the world and manage their emotions. The Enneagram describes nine personality types and maps each of these types on a nine-pointed diagram which helps to illustrate how the types relate to one another.

87: Are You Beating Yourself Up?
Are you beating yourself up?
I had the realization this week that since I haven't had anyone beating me up on the mat for two months, I've started beating myself up.
A very minor bump in the road with a client turned into a major crisis in confidence for me. I fell into the dreaded downward spiral. If you haven't heard episode 7 on the downward spiral, listen to it next.
Until this week, I was unaware how much better I had become at setting boundaries and clear expectations, and going after what I wanted off the mat because I was physically doing it on the mat, or at least trying, a few times a week. It was becoming ingrained in me. I carried that behavior and confidence off the mat with me.
I didn't even know that I was beating myself up until a friend brought it to my attention. It hadn’t occurred to me that the impact of not training would be mental as much as physical. I knew my Gi was getting a little tighter, but I didn't think I was mentally losing my edge.

77: Writing Morning Pages for High Performance
How are you? That feels like a loaded question this week, in a time of social distancing, uncertainty, and fear about what happens next.
Earlier in the week, I pulled out my journal to write my daily affirmations. We just talked about writing affirmations in Ep 73 of the podcast. It’s part of my daily morning routine. But on Tuesday, the more I wrote, the worse I felt because none of them were ringing true for me.
I got so frustrated that I finally stopped and scribbled, “This is all BS.” Then I just started writing everything that I was feeling inside. It felt so good to have an emotional purge and get it all out in a few pages. It was like a little visit back to my practice of writing morning pages.
Later in the week, I was working on a podcast for a client and they mentioned Morning Pages and Julia Cameron. Julia Cameron is the author of a book called The Artists Way - A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity.

Creating Your BJJ Game Plan
AJ walks us through structuring a jiu-jitsu game plan. She starts with the easiest way for white belts to start working on their game plans and then explains how her game planning has changed as she has progressed.
Start by writing down what you know. Structure it for 3 top positions and 3 bottom positions. Write down 2-4 moves that you know from each position. Don’t worry if you don’t know that many moves yet. Write them down as you learn and drill them.
In addition to helping you prepare for competition, following a written game plan will also help your coach troubleshoot areas where you are struggling.
As you advance, your game plan will become more of a system.

68: A Mantra for the Week
I’m competing next weekend. As I was journaling yesterday morning, I came up with my mantra for the week.
I AM CONFIDENT IN MY GAME PLAN AND MY ABILITY TO ADAPT.
My goal this week is to run my game plan at every opportunity. It will also be on repeat in my head as I drift off to sleep every night.
In addition to competing, I also have a lot happening in life off the mat. There are meetings, conversations, client work to be done, and another podcasting workshop to set up.
"I am confident in my game plan and my ability to adapt." will also be my mantra for those activities off the mat. This will help keep me focused and intentional about the outcomes I want to create and the actions needed to make it all happen.

Hannette Staack, Co-founder of Brazil - 021 School of Jiu-Jitsu, will be one of the instructors at the 2020 Roll Model Women’s Only Grappling Camp in Indianapolis. She is a fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
In this episode we talk about the challenges of competing while running a school, overcoming injuries, and turning something bad into something good.
Hannette’s first big moment came in 2002 when after five fights she won her first world championship in the women’s purple/brown/black belt combined division. Since then, Hannette has fought every World Championship, taking six gold medals home in and establishing herself as one of the most tenacious and talented female grapplers in the history of jiu-jitsu.

40: Hillary VanOrnum from Unicorn Jiu-Jitsu
Hillary VanOrnum, Owner and Head Instructor at Unicorn Jiu Jitsu, is the first instructor to be announced for the 2020 Women’s Roll Model Camp. She is a first-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Hillary’s biggest goal with Jiu-Jitsu is to get more women trying it and training. She wants to ease people into it and also give the ladies some real-life self-defense/practical applications of BJJ. She also encourages her female students to try competition as early as possible. She wasn’t able to compete much in her first several years of training because there weren’t many women training let alone competing. She values competition as an opportunity to test our skills against other females of similar size and experience.

If you listened to the latest episode of Beauty and the Gi, episode 34, you heard Emily Kwok talk about being present in the moment and not multi-tasking as one of the ways she manages training along with having a family and a professional career outside of jiu-jitsu.
This wisdom goes hand in hand with a book I’m re-reading called The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. They dedicate an entire chapter to why you need to focus on the task at hand and avoid multi-tasking. Multi-Tasking doesn’t work. Instead, start dedicating focus to one task or project at a time.
When you are practicing your self-care, no matter how you practice it, are you focused and truly present in the moment with it or are you multitasking at the same time?
Dedicate your focus and be present. Even if it is just 5 or 10 minutes of undistracted breathing, meditation, journaling, or whatever flavor of self-care you practice, you will feel more rejuvenated when you’ve been present with only that practice…

Who are you letting into your space? Are you surrounded by people that are lifting you up, or tearing you down and wearing you out?
We know that controlling space is key to our success on the mat. It is also required for success and happiness off the mat.
On the mat, we learn that making space is imperative to create an opportunity to escape.
Are you as mindful of your space when you walk off the mat and out into the world? Do you need to escape from some energy vampires that are sucking the life out of you?
One of the mantras I’ve heard while in class is “When in doubt, shrimp out.” It holds true off the mat.

Playing “The Game” this month has Jen revisiting The Four Agreements, the book by Don Miguel Ruiz that was written as a practical guide to personal freedom.
The first Agreement is “Be impeccable with your word.” This agreement is a good reminder of the power of our words to plant seeds that turn into thoughts that become actions.
Just like we are responsible for actions on and off the mat, we need to practice responsibility for the words we use around ourselves and others.

Ringworm, fungus, and staph infections are hazards of BJJ and many full contact sports. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent bringing them home with you and spreading them around.
Keeping yourself and your gear clean is your number one defense.
Are you washing your gi AND your belt after every class? Do your teammates a solid, don’t be the stinky kid. Wash your stuff.
And if you need to give the stinky kid a hint, this is the perfect time to share the Beauty and the Gi podcast.
