127: Letting Go Of The Past Meditation
Play • 14 min
In this short guided meditation, you will have a chance to release anything from that past that is still holding you back from creating new limitless possibilities for your future. You are the hero of your hero's journey. The past can hold us back or we can learn to let go of what doesn't serve us and continue forward. This mediation is about listening to the voice of wisdom within you that will always urge you into the best you can be.

#56: How to Fit Niyama into Your Yoga Practice
What does yoga represent to you? Why did you take that first step onto the yoga mat? I’ve been practicing yoga because I was looking for a more peaceful life. Now, more than twenty years later, I can confidently say that when I walk off my mat after practice I’m a little bit more peaceful, a little bit kinder. Yoga practice has the power to bring a little bit more love and peace into your life by changing the way you treat others and the way you treat yourself. One can even argue that this quest for peace is why the practice of yoga has survived for so many years. The spirituality of our yoga journey reminds us that this practice is more than just the pose. Even now, when we keep seeing perfectly photographed poses on Instagram, we have to remind ourselves that we are more than just our asana obsessions. We all have our favorite poses. I’m the first to admit that I really wanted to do a headstand when I started my Ashtanga practice. But the true journey of yoga is not limited to the physical poses. The path of yoga is more spiritual and metaphysical. At the core of the metaphysical practice of yoga are the five niyamas: * Saucha: cleanliness and purity * Santosa: contentment, acceptance, and optimism * Tapas: discipline and persistence * Svadhyaya: self-study and study of the sacred texts * Isvarapranidhana: devotion to the higher power These moral and ethical self-disciplines help yogis relate with society. Since very few of us will become monks, the niyamas can help us householder yogis balance our yoga practice with the society in which we live. As I discuss the five niyamas, you may recognize some of these from other episodes. I’ve discussed tapas many times before on this podcast, but not in the way it influences the effort the yogi dedicates to their practice. In yoga, your effort is directly related to how much yoga is asking you to change your life. These changes can manifest in many ways, from dietary changes to complete mental makeovers in your subconscious. Tapas will help you balance your discipline so you can dedicate the right kind of effort to your practice. Remember - we should have that feeling of effort or else we miss the very thing that yoga is trying to teach us. The five niyamas are the substance of the lifelong journey into the spiritual practice of yoga. You will think of them every time you get on your mat, and your perspective of the niyamas will change as you evolve on this journey. Tune in now to learn how to fit the niyama into your yoga practice. I want to keep inspiring you to continue your practice. What’s Love Got To Do With It {part 4}
This month, we have been exploring the cycle of awakening in this 4 part series - ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ And, with today’s episode, we reach the pinnacle of this cycle. Reciprocity. ** This cycle moves from paying attention, to noticing the gifts, to an outpouring of gratitude, and finally to reciprocity. Reciprocity is the literal answer to “what does love have to do with it?” ** Reciprocity is the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit; cultural anthropologists support this idea in what they call the "web of indebtedness". ** In my experience, this web of indebtedness is exactly what we innately become aware of as our meditation practice moves into deeper cycles. It begins as we enter into a reciprocal relationship with our meditation practice. We give our time, energy and attention to our practice, and it responds to us with greater awareness, insight and warmth… The practice becomes sweeter because we give ourselves to it. And eventually, this spills over into our everyday actions - We become more aware of our excess. Of how and what we teach our children. We are more inclined to listen and engage with humans we might not otherwise notice… And that noticing, it is starting another loop on the never-ending spiral of awakening. It is yet again paying attention, which will lead to noticing more gifts, more gratitude and new levels of reciprocity… Let’s explore this cycle now; join me for today’s episode of The Mindful Minute as we talk through this teaching and then share in a 20-minute guided meditation. ** You can practice with me live each Monday as I record this podcast. Your Brain On Food with Nutritional Psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo
Join us for this exclusive pre-released episode as part of Podcast Wellness Week. This episode is brought to you by Dr. Colin Zhu of the Thrive Bites podcast. In this episode of Thrive Bites as the first episode of 2021, I chat with Dr. Uma Naidoo who is a Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist about the connection between the gut and the brain and how we can change our gut and brain health by simply changing what we put into our mouths! Take a listen to this fantastic episode! Michelin-starred chef David Bouley described Dr. Uma Naidoo as the world’s first “triple threat” in the food as medicine space: She is a Harvard trained psychiatrist, Professional Chef, and Nutrition Specialist. Her niche work is in Nutritional Psychiatry and she is regarded both nationally and internationally as a medical pioneer in this more newly recognized field. Featured in the Wall Street Journal, ABC News, Harvard Health Press, Goop, Healthline, Martha Stewart, and many others, Dr. Uma has a special interest in the impact of food on mood and other mental health conditions. In her role as a Clinical Scientist, Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in Nutritional Psychiatry in the USA. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) & Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Naidoo graduated from the Harvard-Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program in Boston during which she received several awards, some of which included a “Junior Investigator Award” (American Psychiatric Association); “Leadership Development for Physicians and Scientists” award (Harvard), as well as being the very first psychiatrist to be awarded the coveted “Curtis Prout Scholar in Medical Education”. Dr. Naidoo, has been asked by The American Psychiatric Association to author the first academic text in Nutritional Psychiatry. In addition to this, Dr. Naidoo is the author of the upcoming title, This Is Your Brain On Food to be released August 4th, 2020. In her book, she shows the cutting-edge science explaining the ways in which food contributes to our mental health and how a sound diet can help treat and prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues, from ADHD to anxiety, depression, OCD, and others.
