VRP @ WinterStorm 2023
For the first time in VRP Rocks history, this episode is out on location! WinterStorm Festival 2023, held in the small west coast town of Troon in Scotland, attracted an unbelievable array of classic rock bands to the three day spectacular and Paul was there to soak up the atmosphere and mingle. Headliners included Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth and Graham Bonnet as well as many other classic acts like Dutch prog group Focus, original Iron Maiden singer Paul Di'Anno, Tyketto, former Rainbow singer Doogie White, UK rock radio favourites FM and Tyketto. Paul catches up with a number of acts backstage, including some of the newer bands making a name for themselves, as well as few of the gig-goers to get their take on the weekend and festivities. Hopefully this gives you a nice feel for what the 3 day event was all about!

107. Jon Levin - Dokken / Doro
Known for his impressive work with bands like Dokken, Warlock and Doro, Jon Levin takes us on a journey through his musical career, sharing insights, stories, and his passion for creating authentic music.
From a young age, Jon showed his musical talent by playing various instruments but it was the guitar that captivated him and ignited his passion for rock music. Inspired by guitar gods like Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, Jon honed his skills and pushed himself to excel. Later on, he discovered the guitar mastery of Eddie Van Halen, with "Unchained" becoming his favorite Van Halen track.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing for Jon. As he opens up about his challenges with reading comprehension, we gain a deeper understanding of the determination and resilience that define a true rock performer. Jon also shares his experiences collaborating with renowned artists such as Doro Pesch and her band, revealing his pride in Warlock's album and the impact they had on the metal scene.
In a surprising turn of events, Jon reveals that he pursued a career in law during the grunge movement. However, music never truly left his soul. Even while in law school, he would occasionally strum his guitar, but it wasn't until he received a life-changing call from Jeff Pilson that his music career reignited.
Discussing his time with Dokken, Jon shares the exhilarating story of how he joined the band. Reluctant at first, it was ultimately his father who convinced him to take the leap. Jon's talent shone through as he played two blazing guitar solos for Dokken without even hearing the tracks beforehand, proving that he had the chops to fill the shoes left by other guitarists.
Throughout the episode, Jon shows immense admiration for Ed Van Halen, praising his brilliance and recounting a brief encounter with the guitar virtuoso when their bands shared a stage. He also takes us back to his early years, recalling the moment he made the pivotal decision to drop out of college against his parents' wishes and fully commit to a career in music.
As we dive into the band's latest album, "Heaven Comes Down," Jon talks about the circumstances they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to collaborate in person, the band relied on correspondence to create the record. Jon discusses his struggle with programming drums but overcame the challenge with the help of a friend, Tommy Henriksen. With the downtime, Jon began recording demos and found that writing in the early hours of the morning worked best.
Jon explains how the album came together, with him sending Don demos and the lead singer improvising lyrics and melodies on the spot. Some songs were collaborations, while others had already been written, allowing the band to adapt and create despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic.
Throughout the episode, Jon's passion for genuine music shines through, as he shares his thoughts on creating without ripping off or forcing ideas. He explains that on "Heaven Comes Down," they managed to accomplish this organically, creating a record filled with raw emotion and strong musicality.

Todays show is John 'The Ox' Entwistle themed. The Ox was of course the bass player with the Who through their thunderous years, one of the greatest bass players of all time. For today’s episode I interviewed his best friend and musical partner for many years after John left the Who, Steve Luongo. In fact they were so close that when Entwistle died in 2002, Johns family asked Steve to read the eulogy at his funeral. Steve has helped to produce and curate a new album of Johns material which is called John Entwistle, Rarities Oxhumed, Volume 1.

Today's guest is the incredible KEVIN GODLEY!!
Kevin's career spans such a wide course, as part of Hotlegs he had a number 2 hit in the UK and then along with Lol Creme, Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart formed 10CC who went on to score 5 top 10 albums in the UK, 3 number 1 singles and 8 other top 10 hits too! He and Lol Creme then left to form Godley and Creme and scored a couple more top 10 singles before switching their attention permanently to making music videos. STEWART COPELAND, rightly regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, joins me on this episode to talk all about his career with The Police, their struggles to start with, the dynamics between him and Sting and what caused the friction, how the studio and song writing process evolved as the success built, the band's split at the height of their fame, their subsequent re-union tour almost 30 years later and what the relationship is like between the members today.

John Steel is a founding member of the brilliant 60s group, THE ANIMALS!
The group were one of the leading bands of the British Invasion and had 10 top 20 hits both in the UK and US but will be forever remembered for one of the classic songs of all time, their rendition of House of the Rising Sun.
Bruce Springsteen publicly declared The Animals as his favourite British group of the 60s, while Bob Dylan changed his sound after hearing them. The Runaways are one of the earliest and most influential all-female rock acts of all time, a band that proved that women could rock just as hard as any man could! The group of Joan Jett, Cherie Currie, Sandy West, Lita Ford and my guest Jackie Fox make up the iconic line-up of the band. Their army of fans stretched across the globe, especially in Europe and Japan where their most famous song, Cherry Bomb – was a number 1 hit! American Pie has become a part of the fabric of America. Don McLean joins me this week to talk about the 50th anniversary of the album/song and to give his wider feelings on a awful lot of things. He talks about working on new material, being watched by the FBI, those early days of his career in the 60's with Pete Seeger and his family lineage which winds back here to a small Scottish island!
American Pie was named as one of the five greatest songs of the twentieth century by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The song entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003 with Don himself being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004. Tony Martin is the former lead singer of the legendary, Black Sabbath. Sabbath's 'lead singer roll of honour' includes Ronnie James Dio and former Deep Purple men Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes but Tony Martin remains the second longest serving lead singer of the band after Ozzy Osbourne! With 3 top 10 albums - including the biggest selling UK album of 1972 - and 4 top 10 singles, Lindisfarne are one of the North East of England's most iconic groups! Songs like 'Run For Home', 'Meet Me On the Corner', 'Fog on the Tyne' and 'Lady Eleanor' are classics of the genre. Mark Stein is the lead singer and keyboard player with influential band Vanilla Fudge and in this episode he tells stories that contain The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Dave Mason and much more.
Vanilla Fudge crashed into the public awareness with the release of their brilliantly re-arranged and reimagined version of "You Keep Me Hanging On". It gained them friends and fans on both sides of the Atlantic and their tours with Led Zeppelin in support across the US are legendary. Mark worked for many years with a former guest on Vintage Rock Pod, Dave Mason, on many albums, plus he was part of Alice Coopers band in the late 70s, and the Tommy Bolin band too.
Now Mark has recently released his first ever solo album 'There’s a Light', which is pretty incredible when you think he's been in the business for so many years! He’s a great storyteller so I hope you enjoy this chat with him.

Donnie Vie is the former frontman, lead singer, songwriter and guitar player with the band Enuff Z Nuff. Best known for their big singles 'New Thing' and 'Fly High Michelle', they were on heavy rotation on MTV, Howard Stern was a big fan and so too was David Letterman, having them multiple times on his show. Rolling Stone magazine even called them “The Hot Band of the Year” following their second album release Strength. They even gathered together some of their favourite musicians to help them on their album Paraphernalia including Rick Neilsen from Cheap Trick, JY from Styx and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

28. Doug 'Cosmo' Clifford - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Doug 'Cosmo' Clifford has just turned 76 and is battling the effects of Parkinsons disease - but that's not stopping him from releasing another album! As part of Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the worlds biggest selling groups of the late 60s/early 70s, Cosmo kept the beat as they released hit after hit, selling millions of records, performing at the legendary Woodstock Festival of 1969 and being inducted into the Rock Hall in 1993. In the coming months he's releasing another album featuring some incredible contributions from musicians including Joe Satriani. 26. Danny Bowes - Thunder
