Sam, who runs hugely popular home birth and freebirth Facebook groups, has unique insight in to the challenges birthing families face due to the number of people who pass through her groups, and Maddie is instrumental in creating the March with Midwives campaign, now in it's second year. We discuss why midwifery is in crisis, the impact this is having on both midwives, they way they practice, and their mental health, as well as the very real and negative impact this is having on birthing people and their long term outcomes for mothers and babies. S6 Ep 8 - hyperemesis gravidarum with Megan from Birth-Ed
In this episode I chat to Megan Rossiter from Birth-Ed about her experience of hyperemesis gravidarum. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a condition at the extreme end of the pregnancy sickness spectrum, and affects approximately 2% of people. Different from pregnancy sickness, HG can be incredibly debilitating for sufferers, and can affect the health of both the pregnant person and the baby. so it is important that you seek medical attention if you are unable to keep any food or fluids down as you can become dehydrated. Megan talks about the difficulties with getting support from her GP and the hospital when she first suffered with HG in her first pregnancy, and how it was better managed in her second. We discuss tips for advocacy, symptoms, and the impact this debilitating condition can have on sufferers.

S6 Ep 7 - maternal assisted caesareans with Dr Elphinstone
In this episode I talk to obstetrician Dr Natalie Elphinstone. Dr Elphinstone is an Obstetrician working on the south coast of Australia. She has witnessed the birth of over 1500 babies and believes in supporting women and families to make individual choices that feel right for them. And if that choice involves a caesarean section, then she’s a keen advocate for making that the best possible version of a caesarean birth it can be!
Her videos of Maternal and Partner Assisted Caesareans have gone viral on Instagram, prompting discussions with healthcare providers all around the world, and inspiring no less than at least 5 other countries to follow her lead so far. We talk about what a maternal assisted caesarean is and why you may want one, how they're done and how to advocate with your obstetrician to have one if they haven't done one before.

In this episode I talk to dietician Leslee Flannery about gestational diabetes and diet. In the UK the advice given when gestational diabetes is diagnosed is to follow the EatWell plate, which promotes a balanced diet, but is this the most helpful advice? Leslee busts some myths about diet and gestational diabetes, the foods you should eat, and what to pair with what to avoid spiking blood sugar levels. Leslee Flannery is a Registered Dietitian, specializing in Gestational Diabetes. She grew up and currently resides in Ohio with her husband and 2 boys. Leslee has been working with pregnant mamas since she became a dietitian in 2013! In this episode I chat to deputy consultant midwife Kelly Sawyer about vaginal exams, who has been involved in the Respectful Vaginal Examinations Project at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Trust, which aims to improve practice and educate pregnant women and people about their rights. We discuss vaginal exams, what they are, when they're necessary and when they're not, the alternatives, and what the research and evidence says. Kelly has been a midwife for 10 years, and is currently the Deputy Consultant Midwife at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, supporting and advocating for people choosing birth options outside of local or national guidance. Prior to that, she was a Home Birth Team Lead in South London. In 2019, she won the "Mum's Midwife of the Year" award for London at the RCM awards, and features on several educational videos for new parents on the BBC's 'Tiny Happy People' website. Maternity care is in crisis. Midwives are leaving the profession in droves. Staffing issues, trouble with retention and newly qualified midwives leaving before they finish training, along with COVID and illness has meant families are not getting the care they not only deserve but need. Midwives themselves are burnt out and suffering, with one third coping with PTSD and 96% of student midwives reporting mental health problems. The March with midwives movement looks to raise awareness of the issues and the impact this has on midwives themselves, and the families they support. I speak to Elle Fleming, a doula and new mum, and Millie, a midwife who has been forced out of a profession she loves in order to protect her own well being.
