Steve Estes is the senior pastor of Brick Lane Community Church in Elverson, PA. He's been there for around 40 years. He's on the board of CCEF (Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation) and has taught a course on preaching at WTS. Besides being a pastor and speaker, Steve is an author of several books. His book writing began with his friendship with Joni Eareckson Tada. They were friends as teenagers and worked through God's sovereignty in Joni's paralysis. When it comes to worship, if we are primarily thinking about unbelievers, we are not primarily thinking about Christ. Our desire for unbelievers to attend worship to hear the gospel may sometimes get us into trouble in this way. We may want to avoid offending them, to make them comfortable, and in doing this, we may want to talk a lot about God's love without talking much about God's justice, judgment, and wrath. Seeker-sensitive worship can be dishonest and unhelpful.

You can trust God the Father to be a good, good Father to you.

STT 060 - Jesus Paid It All Because You Couldn't Pay (HC LD 5, QA 12-15)
When we sin, maybe sin big, we feel like we need to make it up to God and others. We carry the weight of needing to pay off a debt we can't pay. The message of the gospel is that Jesus paid our sin debt in full to free us from the weight of the curse of God's law. Being debt-free allows us to truly love God and others. We should try to make it right with others when we wrong them, but we cannot pay God for our sins, we can only receive Christ by grace alone through faith alone for he is the only sufficient payment.

"I would never do that!" Have you ever said or thought this when people hurt you in some way? The thought that we are above certain sins seems to suggest a certain self-righteousness and naivete. Apart from God's grace, we are all capable of unspeakable evil. The doctrine of original sin is humbling and pushes us to ask for and depend upon God's amazing grace. Jesus would never do that, and he is our confidence.

STT 054 - Constant Confession Is Not Condemnation but Comfort (HC LD 51, Q/A 126)
Why would Jesus teach his disciples to remember their sin and need of grace and to continually ask God for forgiveness? Might it have been for their comfort? Perhaps we feel condemned when we more deeply recognize our sin and need for God's grace. Maybe we'd rather avoid thinking about our sin than confess it. But Jesus taught us that confession and asking for forgiveness is important, in fact, essential to the Christian life.

It is amazing how appealing our will can be. We want to do what we want to do, and we're often skeptical about the goodness of God's will. Why would Jesus teach us to pray, "Thy will be done"? There must be something inherently good about God's will, in fact, much better than our will. We need to trust ourselves less and God more, and that's why we need to pray, "Thy will be done."

What drives us to prayer? Isn't it the awareness of our great need? When we are aware of our physical and spiritual needs, we go to God in prayer for help. However, sometimes, we don't pray with much confidence. Our heavenly Father welcomes us to bring our needs to Him, and He wants us to come expecting good from Him. When we pray, we should express our gratitude for receiving His grace and Spirit.

It is very easy to grow discouraged that we are not making more progress in our fight against sin. However, we are making progress. Even baby steps are progress that pleases and honor our Father. Though our pace of sanctification is often slower than we'd like, we must remember that God's grace is still working and we are still progressing.

The Heidelberg Catechism can help us understand our sinful inclinations. Though God's law exposes our sin, it also pushes us to Christ for comfort and rest. When we realize how deeply sin goes into us, we run to Christ, we receive Christ by true faith, and Christ helps us in our deepest struggles. There is comfort, rest, and hope in Christ as we battle and repent of concupiscence.

I love being the pastor of Jerusalem Church in the small town of Manheim, PA. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. My desire is that this podcast serves my local church well. I also want to reach outside the bounds of my church. In my experience, many local churches and the Christians in them have moved away from the historical and ecumenical creeds (Apostles', Nicene, Athanasian) and Reformed confessions/catechisms. This has left the church somewhat confused about what it believes and how it should live.
Kevin DeYoung wrote a book titled The Good News We Almost Forgot: Rediscovering the Gospel in a 16th Century Catechism. It's a book about the Heidelberg Catechism. Many people, including Reformed/Presbyterian Christians, have forgotten the usefulness of the Heidelberg Catechism and the ancient creeds.
