Sereis 2 Episode 19 | Scotland’s Munros
In this episode we look to the mountains and in particular to the tallest of our mountains - the Munros. Catalogued by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891, we look at the man himself and why his list caused such a stir. Although he never managed to climb them all himself, his legacy lives on in the thousands of “Munro baggers” who have the satisfaction of completing this challenge.

Series 2 Episode 4 | Stories associated with Scottish Lighthouses
Lighthouses and the lives of the men who tended the lamp to keep others safe have captured the imagination of successive generations. Stories are told of the hardships, particularly in war time, and of the lost cargoes and wreckage they would encounter. The most mysterious story of all is set in December 1900 when three keepers disappeared from the isolated Eilean Mor Lighthouse on the Flannan Isles. In spite of many theories no trace of the keepers has ever been found. A tragic event that encapsulates the hardship and danger associated with keeping the light burning.

This week we tackle the emotive and controversial subject of Scotland’s involvement in slave trade and the profits made from the labours of enslaved people. From plantation owners, merchants, lawyers and ministers to the weavers producing slave cloth, the economy of Scotland benefited disproportionately. The wealth generated is visible today in our architecture and statues. As academic research peels back the layers it is important that we tell the story for future generations.

Yet he died in poverty and relative obscurity - a common theme. Satanic panic spread across Europe during the 15th to 17th Century and in Scotland nearly 4,000 individuals, the majority of them women who were accused, tortured, tried and in some cases executed as hysteria took grip. we explore some of the factors that contributed to this environment of suspicion and blame and remember some of the women that suffered at the hands of their accusers - including the King himself.

While the Highlands have their Games and the Borders have their Riding of the Marches , the communities of the mining towns and fishing villages of central Scotland come together for their annual Gala Day. Some claim that the origins lie in the celebrations of the crowds that gathered at the gallows to witness a “guid hanging” while in more recent times they were a day of cheer in the otherwise bleak existence of industrial communities. Episode 36 | Working Women
In this episode we visit Juteopolis – the name given to Dundee in the 19th Century when the city’s landscape and economic activity were dominated by the processing of raw jute from Bengal into hessian or burlap to meet burgeoning demand for sacks, sails and covers for pioneers heading west. For the first time it was the women who were the breadwinners – working in the mills while the men stayed home. Same era but worlds apart, Cate Cranston was a pioneer of a different kind. Astute businesswoman, patron of the arts and social pioneer she introduced tearooms to Glasgow giving respectable women a place to socialise unchaperoned and men a place to escape the demon drink!

Episode 26 | Scottish women of substance
March is Women's History Month and in this week’s episode we mark the contribution of three Scottish women of substance.
Mary Slessor left behind her work in the jute mills of Dundee to travel as a missionary to Nigeria where she did much to advance the rights of women and children. Catherine Herbert, Countess of Dunmore was born at the other end of the social scale and is credited with bringing Harris Tweed to the attention of the world. But were her motives entirely altruistic? Susan’s great grandmother Catherine Scott Morton has no great entries in the history books but was a trail blazer during the war and in local politics post World War Two and her efforts to improve conditions for her constituents were recognised in the award of an OBE.

Bonus episode | Blether with Alisdair Fleming about St Kilda double UNESCO World Heritage Site
We've got a wee bonus for you ! Susan interviewed Alisdair Fleming as a wee teaser ahead of her Virtual Tour of St Kilda on 11th Feb at 8pm GMT / 3pm EST/ noon PT. St Kilda is 40 nautical miles from the nearest other land mass (Outer Hebrides) and was voluntarily evacuated in 1930 when the subsistence style of living was no longer viable. Alisdair's family roots go back to St Kilda from the 1700s until evacuation. We were able to extract the audio so we thought we'd post it so you could listen instead of watching.

Episode 14 | In deep water - Scottish lochs
This is the first episode of December and so it’s time for a “My Favourite” edition. This time we take a look at lochs.
2020 has been Visit Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters and the theme is set to be rolled forward into 2021 as the nation continues to celebrate our vast array of lochs, waterways, islands and coastlines. With over 30,000 freshwater lochs - not to mention the fjords or sea lochs that fringe our coastline - there’s certainly plenty to discuss. Our blethers range across the blockbusters such as Lomond, Ness and Tay to the hidden gems. Monsters, myths and legends to world-renowned produce such as our oysters, mussels and scallops. We’ll even throw in a lake! Dive in - the water’s lovely!

Episode 13 | The saint, the saltire and the psyche !
As this episode airs we are approaching St Andrew’s Day on the 30th of November - Scotland’s official national day. We explore the story behind the man and what led to him being adopted as the patron saint of Scotland - amongst other things including gout! This leads in turn to the Saltire and how it came to be the official flag of Scotland and a visible symbol of our identity. We conclude with a wide ranging and light-hearted discussion on what it is that makes someone Scottish. The traits, the stereotypes, the psyche - “here’s tae us; wha’s like us? Damn few, and they’re a’ deid!”

Mark's first book ‘The River Runs Red’ was published in September 2019. A history of true crime in Highland Perthshire, the book proved an immediate success. Following on from ‘The River Runs Red’ came ‘Blood Beneath Ben Nevis’ and ‘Surviving in the Shadows’, both released in March 2020.

Episode 5 already, who would have thunk it that 3 Scots wumin could put something like this together and have a great laugh doing it !! Welcome to Scottish Blethers, or welcome back for those that have listened to previous episodes.
We are 3 freelance tourist guides who decided that instead of sitting at home twiddling our thumbs whilst our guests and stories disappeared into the new Covid-19 world order, that we would get together virtually through our computers and see if we could batter technology into submission and produce something that people might like to listen to. Episode 1 | Who, what & why !
Scottish Blethers podcast is the result of 3 Blue Badge qualified Scottish tourist guides having time on their hands ! We decided to take our knowledge, learn new (tech) skills and have a laugh talking about different topics relating to Scotland that we thought people might enjoy listening to.
We don't take ourselves too seriously and we hope that you can join us on our podcasting learning curve and let us know what you think - and give us topics that you would like us to cover.
Our first episode is an introduction to who we are, why we have decided to podcast and what you can expect from an episode. At the end of the episode, each of us will choose a Scots word that we want to teach you. In this episode, we explain the word "blether" and other words that can be used to describe a discussion.
