Sam talks with Gavriel D. Rosenfeld and Janet Ward, the two editors of a new book titled Fascism in America. Gavriel D. Rosenfeld is President of the Center for Jewish History and Professor of History at Fairfield University. He is the author or editor of eight books on the Nazi era, including The Fourth Reich: The Specter of Nazism since World War II (2019) and Hi Hitler! How the Nazi Past Is Being Normalized in Contemporary Culture (2014). Janet Ward is an American Council on Education Fellow at Yale University, and Brammer Presidential Professor of History and Faculty Fellow for Strategic Initiatives (DFCAS) at the University of Oklahoma. Past President of the German Studies Association, she is the author or co-editor of seven books, including Post-Wall Berlin: Borders, Space and Identity (2014) and the forthcoming Sites of Holocaust Memory. Trump Indicted + Media Complicity in the Rise of Fascism
History was made this past week as Trump was finally federally indicted for keeping classified documents, mishandling them and obstructing all attempts to retrieve them from his bathroom and ballroom in Mar-a-Lago (among other places). Sam Goldman comments on this new situation and the calls for violence to retaliate from Trump and other Republifascist leaders.

Over the past couple weeks SCOTUS has issued a series of rulings that flag that they are no longer concerned with the appearance of legitimacy: rights no longer need to be read to people arrested by the police, states cannot issue laws restricting who can conceal guns, and the EPA cannot prevent power plants from filling the air with pollution. They also agreed to hear a case that would enable state legislatures to conduct elections according to whatever procedures they set... and of course overturned the constitutional right to abortion, setting in motion the chaos we're seeing across the country as clinics shut down and patients, including a 10 year old rape victim from Ohio, have had to travel great distances to obtain access to abortion.

On Wednesday, January 6th, we saw President Trump call forth and unleash fascist mobs to storm the U.S. Capitol.
This was an attempt at a coup. It did not succeed this time, but the danger from even a failed coup is to be taken seriously, setting the stage for them to come back sooner or later to re-seize power – with or without Trump.

Voices from the Portland Protests
In an ominous escalation of fascism, the Trump/Pence regime sent federal agents from multiple agencies to storm the streets of Portland, Oregon and crush ongoing protests. He is now deploying them to positions across the country, targeting those who dare to defy this regime and Democratic-run cities with large populations of Black people.
In the United States the federal government now commands rapid deployment forces that can be sent to suppress protest or take over as “law enforcement” for any reason the regime deems necessary. They are deployed and commanded by a fascist lunatic, heading into an election. If NOW isn’t the time to be in the streets nonviolently demanding the immediate ouster of this regime, when IS?

Chantelle Herschberger & Michael Plaut: How to Defeat Police State Repression
Chantelle Herschberger and attorney Michael Plaut discuss the case of the Freeway 9 in Los Angeles - activists who blocked the highway in 2017 with a banner reading “Trump/Pence Out Now.” The case was finally dismissed this spring after two mistrials. Organizers with Refuse Fascism in LA mounted a political defense, admitting that they were in fact on the highway, but that it was necessary and protected under the first amendment due to the danger posed by this regime. Over the course of the prosecution it was discovered that the LAPD sent undercover informants to spy on protesters. This week, as Trump and acting DHS secretary Chad Wolf have sent federal forces to Portland to suppress protesters and threaten to deploy this secret police to many other cities, there are vital lessons to learn from this case and how to fight police state repression on all fronts.
