The Righteousness Requirement | Matthew 5:17-48 | 12/07/2020
As Jesus preaches in the Sermon on the Mount, he begins to challenge his disciples with a standard of righteousness even higher than given by the law in the Old Testament. He says “Your righteousness must exceed that of the scribes and the Pharisees” and “You must be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect”. Who then can be saved?!

God wants to thrive. He wants to bless us. And he wants us to bear good fruit for his kingdom. In Isaiah 5, Judah demonstrates how she has completely failed to do that and so God brings judgement upon her. There are 6 “Woes” pronounced against her in this chapter and 4 “therefores” of judgement. It seems there is no hope, until Jesus arrives in the New Testament, describing himself as the True Vine and teaching us how to bear good fruit.
