As we move through our study in 1 John, we come to a major theme in John's letter: we are God's children. Being part of God's family is a major theme in the Bible, going all the way back to Genesis. We take a look at what that means in the context of the believer's relationship with sin and sanctification.

1 John 2:3-14: The Old New Commandment
John's letter deals a lot with our duties as Christians. What should a believer in fellowship look like? Who should she be? A large part of this answer revolves around loving "the brethren" (aka, the church). Our ability to love other believers is extremely foundational to our faith. In fact, 1 John explains that those who are incapable of loving other Christians are probably not even saved. We end this section of the book going over John's beautifully worded statements about the Christians he was writing to.

1 John 1:1-2:2: Fellows in a Ship
1 John has a lot to say about fellowship. In fact, it's one of the underlying themes of the whole book! John the Apostle was writing to remind Christians of the great fellowship we share with Jesus and with each other. It's this two-fold fellowship that is so necessary to understand the book as a whole. God created us to be in relationship with Him, and then to be in community with others who worship Him. This original design is reinstalled in us by Christ as salvation, and it's essential to a healthy Christian life. This letter also speaks a lot about the relationship between the believer and sin. Reckless interpretation of these passages has led to some fairly dangerous false teachings about sinless perfection and other ridiculous things, which we get into in the episode.

1 John Overview: Confidence in Christ
Season 3 of the podcast starts with a brand new study through the letters of John the Apostle. As we look at 1 John, we talk about the overarching theme of assurance of salvation and how that confidence shapes our walk with Jesus. John wrote this first letter in a very unusual format, which can make it seem hard to follow and understand. But over the course of our study, we'll see how John's unique style emphasizes and elevates his message about confidence in the person and the work of Jesus Christ.
We also talk about how light and darkness are not a balance, but two opposing forces and that leads into talking about Star Wars, naturally. Esther (Part Six): The Salvation of God's People
We conclude the study of the book of Esther by examining how Esther and Mordecai dealt with the impending "kill" order that Haman had gotten written into law. Through this last section, we see God's ultimate justice and His salvation and care for His people. Esther (Part Five): Haman and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
The book of Esther is ramping up quickly now as Haman's grand, evil plans unravel at a breakneck speed. In the span of 24 hours, Haman goes from living his best life and feeling like royalty to seeing his plans foiled and his life taken. Esther (Part Four): Esther and Mordecai
Chapters 4 and 5 of the book of Esther include some of the most pivotal moments of the whole story. Mordecai and Esther discuss Haman's horrific plan, and Mordecai pleads with Esther to do something about it. In an awesome move, Esther takes ownership of her faith and the fate of the Jews of Persia and decides to attempt to fix things. Major themes in this section include faith and prayer. Esther (Part Three): Haman Hatches a Heinous Plan
This week, we finally meet the human villain of the story of Esther: Haman the Agagite. Haman was a pretty bad dude (Hitler-level bad, honestly), and in this episode, we see how Mordecai's decision to stand up to Haman set off the rest of the chain of events in the book. A master of the silver tongue, Haman knew just what to tell King Xerxes to get him to sign off on the total genocide of the Jewish population of Persia. Just what pushed Haman to this psychotic rage, as well as what Mordecai was taking a stand for exactly, are not fully known, but Haman's ancestors and the once-whole nation of Israel had enough history to make plenty of educated guesses.

Esther (Part Two): The Bachelor, Medo-Persian Edition
As the study of the book of Esther continues, we examine Mordecai's and Esther's entrances into the story. Xerxes loses a war, Esther enters the ancient world version of The Bachelor, and Mordecai saves the king's life. Taking a fresh look at this part of the story, you'll find that Mordecai and Esther weren't particularly "good Hebrews" in the sense of obeying the commands and instructions set forth in the Jewish law by God. But in spite of their hidden faith and questionable morals, God set them both in prominent positions for greater plans. Esther (Part One): The Demise of Queen Vashti
We're kicking off a new book study on the BBP: Esther! Unlike previous, books, this won't necessarily be a verse-by-verse study, but rather a section-by-section study, looking through each major breakdown the book. The book of Esther is a historical and narrative book, so we have to take a wider look at the sections of Scripture here.
The book of Esther is one of our favorite books. We explore the historical and scriptural context, some of the major themes, and start right into the first chapter of the book. Unlike most books of the Bible, the name of Jehovah God is not actually mentioned, yet His presence and workings are undeniable throughout. Colossians 4: The Long Goodbye
Our study in Colossians concludes with a look through chapter 4. After a few verses continuing to dive deeper into the implications of Christ's preeminence in our personal lives, Paul wraps up the letter. He walks through a list of his fellow-workers and talks about his wishes for the church at Colossae. Paul accomplished a lot for the kingdom of God, but he rarely did it alone. The mission of the church is a group endeavor where every member has something to contribute. This end section also contains a lot of interesting connections to other people and books in the Bible. Curtis also riles Kreig up about the newest season of Doctor Who, but we're not talking about that right now...

Colossians 3:12-4:1: Love That Works
We finish Colossians 3 by talking about the "put on" part of Paul's "put off, put on" analogy. Just as we were told to put off sinful behavior, we are shown how, by the power of Jesus, to "put on" virtuous behavior. When you try to leave behind something bad, you have to put something good in its place. How Teenagers Engage With Scripture (With Guest Co-Host Joemel Delossantos)
This special episode marks one year since The Bible Burrito launched! We've got a new theme song and some new ideas on the way. To celebrate, we brought in a good friend of ours to talk about a topic familiar to all 3 of us: youth ministry. Joemel Delossantos serves as the Youth Pastor for First Baptist Church of Spring Valley as well as working part-time for Urban Youth Collaborative of San Diego. Recently, UYC has launched a podcast/show geared specifically to youth pastors, talking about a wide range of topics and delivering plenty of laughs. Philemon: Radical Love
This week in our Colossians study, we take a quick break from the book of Colossians itself to discuss a book that is very connected to it: Philemon. The subjects at play in this book involved a total upheaval of societal norms form that period as Paul urged his friend Philemon to accept his former slave Onesimus back as a brother in Christ instead of a slave. Philemon, as a leader in the church at Colossae, was not a perfect man, but he loved God, and his life and circumstances has a lot to teach us about how we treat others. Colossians 1:14-22: Jesus Is…
We continue our study through Colossians looking at a theologically rich portion of Scripture. Verses 14 through 22 declare Jesus as preeminent, not just prominent, and details in no uncertain terms Who Jesus is. Jesus is God, He is Redeemer, He is Sustainer, and He is the Head of the Church. With all of this in mind, we also discuss what that means for us, and what we should do with this look at the glory and deity of Christ. Jesus doesn’t just want to be first on a list of what’s important. He should be the list!

Colossians 1:1-13: Welcome to Colossae!
Colossians chapter 1 kicks off with a bang! This chapter is so full of doctrine and truth that we couldn’t possibly cover it all in one week. In our first week in chapter one, we discuss Paul’s opening statements in his letter to the church at Colossae. We see what was so important to Paul that he felt compelled to write to a church he’d never even been to before. As with the rest of the book, the preeminence of Christ is forefront. Also interesting to note is how Paul combatted the Gnostic heresies of experiential, personal knowledge with the ultimate and redemptive knowledge of God Himself.
As per usual, we talk about Disney+, especially how much we wish they’d revive the ABC musical comedy Galavant on the streaming platform.

Colossians Overview: Christ Above All

It’s a new year, a new season, and new study! We’re launching into another book of the Bible as we kick off season 2 of the BBP. This time around, we talk about Colossians. The overview takes us through who wrote it, how it connects to history and Scripture as a whole, and what the purpose of the book is. Colossians is deeply theological book that declares the deity and glory of Jesus Christ at every turn. Paul the Apostle was writing to combat the heresy of the Gnostics at Colossae and their love of mysticism, so he comes right out of the gate swinging.

Titus Chapter Three: Living in an Ungodly World
In spite of a number of audio glitches and internet issues, we finally got this episode published!
We conclude our study in the book of Titus with chapter 3, and a focus on how to live as godly believers in an increasingly ungodly culture. The competing thoughts in Cretian churches at this time were to either run from culture or embrace it. Paul encouraged Titus to teach them to meet the culture head on as a shining light of what the Gospel really can do in a person’s life. From kindness, to humility in light of our pre-salvation lives, Paul covers many aspects of living in such a faithless world.
Spoilers for the first two episodes of The Mandalorian are also discussed, along with Disney+ as a whole. We also wax eloquent on the finer points of pico de gallo.

Titus Chapter Two (Part Three): Why Bother?
After some technical mishaps, Curt & Kreig finally wrap up chapter two of Titus talking about verses 11-15. This section is really the climax of the chapter, and underlines how the Gospel is the reason why any of the do’s and don’t’s in the Bible have any bearing at all. These verses also give us an excellent look at the threefold reality of our salvation: justification, sanctification, and glorification.
Curt also gets up to his old bonnet-wearing antics, and Kreig dishes about the best starter Pokemon.

Curt & Kreig were privileged to have Curt’s dad Pastor Curtis King with us for this special topical episode. Pastor King joined us in studying how the Gospel is presented throughout the book of Titus. We often think of Titus as mostly an instructional book geared primarily to a church leader, but the entire basis of Paul’s letter to Titus hinges on the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In fact, each chapter has something unique and powerful to say in relation to the Gospel.

Chips and Salsa 5 with Guest Nathan Birt
Our guest co-host from last week agreed to get in the hot seat for our timed minisode. We asked Nathan what his life verse was and why, and he walked us through a meaningful look at a fantastic verse from Psalms. Being a children’s pastor, he’s a quick talker and quick thinker, so he breezed right through the question with plenty of time to spare, so we spent the remaining time talking about Psalms as a whole.
We also dove into the theological importance (or lack thereof) of beards. Nathan also peeled back the curtain to reveal the dark side of Curtis that comes out during family Monopoly games.

Our very first ever guest co-host is a very good friend of ours: Nathan Birt. Nathan serves as the children’s pastor at Lancaster Baptist Church in Lancaster, CA, and he has also recently co-authored a devotional book on revival with Dr. John Goetsch. Titus Chapter Two (Part Two): Disorder in the Home
Our marathon recording session in Titus 2:1-10 concludes with this look at verses 5-10. While God has a lot to say to the older generations in the church, he also has quite a list of Spirit-empowered traits for the younger believers to embody. From the role of wife, husband, or even just employee, God wants his people to glorify Him in their place in life. While modern society downplays the differences between men and women as sexism, the Bible elevates women and men in their different but equally important roles in the home. He also has eye on those who society would deem to be at the bottom of the ladder of success, noting that they, too, are a valuable part of His church.
Titus 2 is rich with instruction, but it’s all wrapped in the understanding that Jesus is the only One Who can give us the ability to perform that which He’s set before us to do. For His glory, with His help, we can live a life that leads others to Him.

Chips and Salsa 4: Kreig’s Favorite Bible Character
Our Chips and Salsa Episodes are opportunities for Curtis and Kreig to answer questions on the fly, with a 10-minute timer constraint keeping them on topic. This week, Curt asks Kreig what his favorite person in the Bible is (other than Jesus). Kreig’s answer ends up being a bit atypical, and he explains why this rock-steady person is so important to him spiritually.

Titus Chapter Two (Part One): Lead By Example
After quite a long break, we’re back in the book of Titus, looking at chapter two.
Chapter 2 moves from instruction for Titus to the instruction Titus should be reinforcing to the churches. Paul has instruction for every demographic in the church, and he starts off with the older believers. Those who are mature in age and in the faith are intended to set the tone and lead the way for the younger generations, but that wasn’t happening in Crete.
This recording session ran so full of content that we had to break it into two episodes, so this represents the first 30-minute block of recording from that. In the first few verse of the chapter, we see the specific charge to the elders (in age) at the Cretian churches.

Titus Chapter One (Part One): Organize, Mobilize, Stabilize
Titus chapter one is all about leadership. Paul encouraged Titus to continue being a godly leader, he instructed him on how to appoint qualified leaders, and he warned him about destructive leaders. All was not well on the island of Crete, and Titus had a lot of work to do. As the book as a whole will describe, chapter one introduces the idea that a Spirit-filled believer is one that does the work of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Curt and Kreig also dish about Pixar and what the opposite of a “shameless plug” would actually be called.

Titus Overview: Out of Order
Our new book study takes us to the New Testament letter of Titus. Titus is one of the pastoral epistles, written to a man (named Titus, obviously), whom the Apostle Paul had sent to the island of Crete to set the churches on the island in order. A lot had gone wrong in the churches on Crete, and Paul lays out God’s expectations for the pastors as well as for the members of those churches.
The epistle to Titus is also one of encouragement to a godly leader who was facing opposition from two opposing fronts. There were two camps of false teachers, one spreading a lascivious, immoral lifestyle, and the other a corrosive doctrine of legalism. Both of these teachings were wrong and destructive for the believers in Crete, and Paul encouraged Titus to set these false teachers straight. Paul’s protégé would need to show the Christians on the island that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was the truth that would give them the ability to do God’s work.

Nahum Chapter Three: The Cause of Nineveh’s Comeuppance
Curt & Kreig conclude their study of Nahum with chapter three. They see how God gave ample reasons for the “why” of the destruction of Nineveh. Slave trade, senseless violence against the children of their enemies, and more played large parts in the ultimate downfall of Assyrian capital. Nahum succinctly answers the question of why Nineveh would “henceforth receive their comeuppance.”
Chapter three also details the fallout from Nineveh’s destruction. Their mighty warriors would flee, the line of kings would be cut off, and their people would be scattered among the nations. To rub salt in the wound, the Bible prophesied that none of Assyria’s neighbors would pity their downfall. No one would show any sympathy for the destruction of this abusive empire.
And of course, it wouldn’t be The Bible Burrito without a handful of references to nerd culture. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Chronicles of Narnia, and Avengers: Infinity War’s Thanos all come up during this chapte…

Nahum Chapter Two: The Fall of Nineveh
Chapter two of Nahum details the actual fall of the city of Nineveh, as prophesied by Nahum decades before. God’s judgment is dealt with heavily in this chapter. In the context of the book as a whole, this judgment is actually very comforting to God’s people. This chapter gives a detailed look at how this judgment would be carried out against Nineveh.
