Set an Intention for the Holidays
We're asking ourselves (and you!): What do you want this holiday season? Consider setting an intention like you would at the start of a yoga class! Name your want. Could that want be even more specific? And then, make any plans or preparations to bring your want to fruition. Do this holiday season on purpose, dig down into your desires, and make efforts to bring them about. We're right there with ya! Checkout: Re-engage With Intention S2 E52. Waste Time With God
Our last episode in our Just One Thing series is not quite what the title would lead you to believe. To spend time with God is never a waste! What we mean is: how might you enjoy time in God's presence in ways that don't necessarily "produce" something? What's a non-transactional way you'd like to spend time with God? What gives you joy, what brings you delight? Try doing that *with* God this week. Note: all the blessings are from the book In the Sanctuary of Women, by Jan Richardson

Dip a Toe Into Centering Prayer
Our second highest listened to episode of all time is "Centering Prayer"! This week we are talking about it again because it's a fantastic Just One Thing to anchor us into the present... which is literally the whole point of the practice! If you've tried-on this spiritual discipline before and felt like you failed, or you wrestled so hard to quiet your thoughts you were more exhausted than rested, we get it!! But how about giving it another shot? Set a timer for only 5 minutes and set your intention to "consent to the actions of God within". Thin Places: Where Heaven Meets Earth and Your Reality
We're really excited to try-on our Just One Thing this week: Thin Places. This one is brand new to us! But the practice has ancient roots in Celtic Christianity. A Thin Place is a location or a moment in which your sense of the sacred is more pronounced. Where the space between the transcendent and the common place is exceptionally narrow. When has the veil between heaven and earth felt thin to you? That's a Thin Place! This week, how and where might you invite awareness of heaven meeting earth? Explore with us the idea and practice of certain spaces as sacred places. For more: https://www.asacredjourney.net/thin-places/

Let be. Let be.
Your "Just One Thing" for this week proves we're using minimalism to be in the moment! Under 3 mintues in length, but with the power to hold you in the present, in the presence of God. Let this blessing roll over you like a wave. Breathe deep and check in: is your well running dry? Let yourself come into this space where your soul can safely come out and be seen. And let yourself be.

Phone a Friend
How's your social life? Maybe that's not a question you've asked yourself in a while! When life is moving at a fast pace, sometimes we forget about our need to connect; specifically connection at the soul level. Be in the here-and-now with someone who knows you, sees you, gets you. The Steady Practice of Gratitude
Your "Just One Thing" this week: gratitude. Naming what or who you are grateful for can anchor you to the present. Whether you keep a private daily journal or you collect a corporate family list over the week, focusing on gratitude has the power to command mindset; from scarcity to abundance, from complaint to thanks. Simply pick a way to name what you're grateful for and you'll find yourself present to the goodness in your life! Breathing Room for the Soul S2 E67

Ode to Summer
Are you like us: mourning the end of summer? Even with all the lovely autumn things ahead, we wanted to first say goodbye to the last season. Whether you're anticipating fall with excitement or apathy, slow down with us and reflect on what has come and gone. Notice the blessings, joys, and times of feeling most yourself. Interview With the Author!
We sit down with Christine Sine, author of The Gift of Wonder in this episode! What a gift and a delight to chat face-to-face with the woman who wrote this impactful book. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time together in this series; exploring the many spritual practices and proposing profound questions. Hospitality As Listening
We stretch our understanding and definition of hospitality to the current circumstances. We may not be able to welcome everyone into our homes for a meal right now, but we can invite people into "safe spaces"? Through listening and laying aside defense, can we be good hosts for each other's souls? As summer winds down, we wrap up our read-thru of The Gift of Wonder. However! Next week we interview the author - Christine Sine!! Refrenced: How to Disagree With Grace S2 E44

What Do You See?
We are headed into fall which often means changes to schedules, structures, and rhythm. These shifts led themselves to this great question: what practices would I enjoy (and bring God joy) in *this* season? because practices are "more patterns of purpose than of form". Another question we're asking ourselves has to do with being aware of where we can offer compassion. The answers will vary, yet all of us would benefit from considering where we can model kindness daily. Their conversation focuses on play; the many benefits of play and how it can be a spiritual excercise in community. Mentioned - women's weekend https://www.liminalwork.com/

The Book of Creation
Being in nature has a deep impact on us Earthlings. From our toes to nose, we come more alive when we spend time out-of-doors and mingle with God's creation. Whether you get your hands into the dirt and manifest a garden, or kick off your shoes to feel sand on your soles, or you plan activities around the unique pace every season nature brings - be reminded that we are "soil people, inspired by the breath of God". Let's Get Curious
Kids are forever asking questions. At a certain age "why" seems to be a favorite! These inquiries are a seeking for knowledge and understanding about a complex world. As adults, the questions can get more complicated and the answers harder to reach. But what if we approached the asking as a spiritual practice? Jesus was often answering questions with questions; teaching through the asking of questions. In this episode (and chapter 6 of The Gift of Wonder) the use of a finger Labyrinth (and walking a full size Labyrinth) are explained, as these are fantastic tools to apply while contemplating a question before and with God. Try it on and let's get curious! https://labyrinthlocator.com/

The Power of Imagination
What ignites your creativity, stimulates zeal for life, and sparks joy within? Maybe those aren't quickly answered. Maybe you'll want to sit with these and wonder a while. You might think back and retrieve earlier memories of when you were inspired or go on a hunt for what made you "come alive". Loss of imagination is often a byproduct of becoming an adult (similar to Playtime, S2 E61) A great place to start again is noticing God's immense creativity in nature; where do you see "God doodles". And create your own doodles. We've got our very own Honeycomb Journals made just for this practice! *On sale now* www.breathandbe.net/store

Let Your Life Speak
Admittedly, creating a "life map" or even looking back over your life, can be intimidating and perhaps even scary. In this exercise, Michelle walks you through reflection questions and presents several options to customize this experience of allowing God to speak to you through the mountains, valleys and detours of your life. You can find your "joy spots" along the way! The episode is based on Christine Sine's practice in Chapter 3 of The Gift of Wonder, the basis for our summer series on playful practices in awe and wonder. In addition, Jan Richardson is quoted from her wonderful book, In the Sanctuary of Women. Jan's words will comfort you if you experience regret or questions about the path you took in life. As we grow up we usually grow out of childlike ways of exploration and curiosity. We take life, work, God and ourselves rather seriously. And when it comes to devotion or spiritual disciplines, we almost never consider play as an option for connecting with The Divine. But what if play holds a key to more intimacy with God, self, and others? We'll never know unless we try it on! Restorative & Transformative Practices, and What's the Difference
We continue our highlights from the book, The Gift of Wonder by Christine Aroney-Sine. From chapters 2 & 3, Lexie & Michelle are taking a peek at awe deprivation and how playful practices help us recover awe and wonder, but also how we need anchoring practices of restoration and transformation. What's the difference? The playful practices from this book will be explored all summer in our episodes, with a deep dive in a couple of practices coming soon. We set you up for that in this episode, including the challenge to find a community to do these practices with. Can Christians Practice Yoga
We are hoping for curiosity, not controversy with this one. Though we know (oh, we know!) that there are some Christians that are opposed to considering yoga as an acceptable form of exercise, let alone an act of worship. What Do You Want to Weary Yourself Out With (and for Whom)
It's unofficially SUMMERTIME! And the flow of life will change for a few months. So, we are asking 'where would we like to allocate our energy?' How can we make room for fun and structure and spontaneity and space to do nothing and still have those life-as-usual-days? These are our thoughts on the perfect summer rhythm. The Art of Gathering
Another great book that's changing the way we do things: "The Art of Gathering". Whether you're planning a family reunion, a birthday, or a neighborhood potluck this book draws out 'the why' of your gathering. Giving fantastic perspective and great questions to consider the purpose of bringing people together. Discernment: Part One
Discernment: we all need it, for all kinds of situations! But it's more than decision making, it's a way of guiding your life. Where is God active and how can you participate with Him? And if there are choices to be made, big or small, how can you know which one He'd prefer? How to Disagree With Grace
Tension from differing points of view has the power to break a relationship. But what if we could remember that a person is more important than an opinion? Can we choose to dig deeper into loving the person, more than digging in our heels and loving being right? (Interview w/Kiyomi episode #24)

Reflect & Rest: a Meditation for Lent
Allow Lexie to guide you in a meditation to welcome Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, a 40 day pilgrimage and preparation of the soul leading to Easter Sunday. All spiritual practices are for the purpose of entering more deeply in to God's love, presence and dependence on His grace. So if you find yourself burdened with the idea of Lent, giving up things, or deliberating over your sins, consider this an opportunity to reframe Lent as a time for intentional reflection and rest. Praying in Color
Do you struggle with staying still long enough to pray or coming up with the right words? If so, you'll want to "try on" this practice, Praying in Color. Reducing prayer to only conversation makes it simply a mental activity, but God is inviting us to engage our entire being in communion with Him. Praying in Color is just one way to do that. Praying in Color can include intercession or prayers for others, but it can also be a tool to soak in and stay with a piece of scripture longer than you normally would. We'll share our personal experience with Praying in Color and the transformation we have witnessed. No creativity or art experience required! Reference: Praying in Color by Sybil MacBeth

Comfort & Stability
As we head towards our ninth month in a pandemic, we ask ourselves, what will keep us grounded and produce joy? Retreating From the Battle
Quarterly retreat is on our "to do's" list. Whether that means in a group, or alone, in silence, or virtually online; Michelle and Lexie value the discipline of retreat from the daily battle. Included in this episode is an interview with retreat attendees! Retreat requires surrender and trust. Perhaps we don't have to be everywhere at all times and hold the world together? What does it look like to be fully human and restore? Note to our friends: there are some audio challenges on this episode, but we know you'll love it despite its imperfections. In fact it is a Deep Breath value to be okay with imperfections. We do our best to give you a great listening experience, and sometimes we settle for quality content over quality editing. We are still learning! Mentioned in this episode: "Invitation to Retreat", by Ruth Haley Barton

The Practice of Celebration
Celebration is actually a spiritual practice! Who knew? One way to enter into the divine life of the Trinity is through celebration. It is not dependent on perfect circumstances or happy feelings. Creativity and Play
Many in our circles are feeling low energy and hitting a wall in month #7 of Covid. The word "play" doesn't even seem applicable with so many serious things going on in the world. And what practical use is there for creativity in these times? From a beginner stance, Lexie and Michelle are learning to embrace play and creativity and all the benefits they bring. More questions covered in this episode: Do you consider yourself a creative? Do you allow yourself the "luxury" of play? What are the benefits of play?

What is a Spiritual Discpline/Practice?
Feeling stagnant in your pursuit of God or wandering aimlessly? We invite you to "try on" a spiritual practice. Spiritual disciplines (or practices) are central to the Deep Breath podcast, so we dedicate this episode to defining what a discipline is and sharing more about the transformative power of these practices. Simply said, spiritual disciplines are really just a way of posturing ourselves to receive from God and tuning in to God's "radio waves". To get more specifics on some of these disciplines, you'll enjoy these Deep Breath previous episodes that cover these disciplines: #4 Sabbath #11 Journaling #12 Lament #19 Soul Friendships #20 Centering Prayer #21 Lectio Divina #25 Spiritual Direction #26 Examen Recommended Readings: Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Exploring the Examen
Lexie and Michelle walk you through the spiritual practice called the Examen. This short and simple practice has been used by Christians for centuries as a way to notice where God shows up in our daily life. It is a practice that attends to what we might otherwise miss in the press of duties and busyness. For a list of the questions, please go to our Instagram page, DeepBreath54321. There are various versions of the Examen, but we share the one that we practice. For other versions of the Examen, even for young adults and children, check out the Pray as You Go app.

Revamp or Release
What if, instead of revamping and adding to your fall schedule, you choose the act of release? Our conversation invites you to look at places that feel depleting and not life-giving. Letting go of just one thing may open the door for a lighter and freer rhythm for fall during Covid season. For more details on creating a rhythm for your life, see Episode #3 Quarantine and a new rhythm of life.

Spiritual Direction (or Companionship)
If you're longing to be more attentive to God and His movements within your heart, spiritual direction is worth exploring. We define what spiritual direction is technically, but also give our personal experience with this sacred practice. How does group spiritual direction differ from individual spiritual direction? What is the difference between spiritual direction and counseling? All these questions, and more, answered in this week's episode. - Information on Group Spiritual Direction and starting a group, check out Seeking God Together by Alice Fryling. - To get a small taste of what spiritual direction is like, Michelle provides 15 minute mini sessions on Zoom called 15 Minutes to Breathe & Be. To join the Monday or Saturday sessions at 9:00 am PST, email firstname.lastname@example.org - One great resource to find a spiritual director in your area: https://www.soulformation.org/find-spiritual-director

I Corinthians 13:4-7 The Passion Translation And Lexie quoted Brene Brown: Don't shrink. Don't puff up. Stand your sacred ground.

Song of Songs Meditation
Today, enjoy this mini retreat for your soul from Song of Songs 2:10-15 in the Passion Translation. Grab some paper and flesh out the questions presented, but do it playfully. No need to "work" too hard, but rather rest and see what emerges as you soak in His presence and His words spoken like poetry over you. We have unusual schedules the next two weeks, so we thought it would be lovely to offer a short meditation from each of us. Let us know what you think? We'll be returning to our regular format in a couple weeks with some surprises! Stay tuned.

Centering Prayer incorporates silence, stillness, and solitude. These three things can be hard to find and hard to create... or even hard to choose! It's a challenge to silence the mind and simply be, even for a brief interval of the day. But of course we're going to encourage you to try it on. This practice welcomes the awareness of God's presence, helping us to rest in the fact that the loving God is with us. You may find the more you practice this discipline, the more peace you will experience, and suddenly you'll notice transformation has happened, almost taking you by surprise. Listening. Lamenting. Learning.
The last couple weeks have been agonizingly full of death, racial tension, protests and riots. The pain our country is in has us pausing, and we invite our friends into a moment of silence. Silence is a way we can listen with attention and intention, to lament and be with the suffering. We also explore a few other practices conducive to listening with attention and yield to the action of the Holy Spirit.
