In The Woods
TN:63 IDLES, Nick Launay & Adam Greenspan
In this episode John is joined by Idles guitarist Mark Bowen along with co-producers Nick Launay and Adam “Atom” Greenspan to talk about how they wrote, recorded and produced the band’s latest album ‘Ultra Mono’. Unearthing backstage phone demos and rehearsal room recordings, Bowen, Nick and Adam look back on how the album was pulled together, from the band’s chats about concepts to the eight days recording the whole record. Reminiscing on their time in La Frette Studios, we hear stories of both the raucousness and intense focus encapsulated within an Idles session. The trio dig into the explosive drum recording, their staircase microphone setup and the special sauce that forms the very essence of an Idles track. Listen to find out what happened when Warren Ellis made a surprise studio visit, why everyone got sent out of the room during some of the vocal takes, and why civilised French lunches were so key to the album’s success. In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast
Delroy Lindo
Throughout a stage and screen career spanning decades, Delroy Lindo has intentionally set out to play the widest possible variety of characters. “I want to be able to encompass different human beings,” explains the actor, detailing the ebbs and flows of his career on this week's episode of “In the Envelope.” Delroy’s advice is balanced between optimistic encouragement and no-nonsense realism. It is inevitable that a life in the arts will bring dry spells, he says, but “don’t be dissuaded by the trauma of being told ‘no.’ Because at some point you will be told ‘yes,’ just as I was.” Born in London, raised in Canada and the U.S., and trained in San Francisco, New York City, and regional theaters, Delroy has pursued performing since his elementary school Nativity play. He’s appeared onscreen in “Soul of the Game,” “The Cider House Rules,” “Get Shorty,” and “The Chicago Code,” earned a Tony nomination for “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” and currently stars on CBS All Access’ legal drama “The Good Fight.” After working with Spike Lee in the 1990s in “Malcolm X,” “Crooklyn,” and “Clockers,” Delroy reunited with the Oscar-winning writer-director in last year’s Netflix hit “Da 5 Bloods,” earning him Critics’ Choice Award and SAG ensemble nominations. This episode also features an update from Backstage L.A. casting specialist Christina Kleppinger, as well as casting insider Christine McKenna-Tirella’s advice on survival jobs: --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years.
