Play • 2 hr 1 min

Our new episode is not only a double bill but also something unique. For the first time we are talking about a novel. In this podcast, we talk about a one of a kind Tamizh novel. Pettai by Tamizh Prabha that was published by Kalachuvadu Publications in 2017. The novel deals with the history of Chinna Thari Pettai - modern day Chintadripet in Madras, India and the story of a host of interesting characters over the course of four decades till the present day.  Aditya along with singer, songwriter and musician Arivu, and independent journalist Kavitha Muralidharan delve deep into the intricacies of the novel to mine the ways in which the author has captured the lives of the people of Chintadripet. No prizes for guessing where he's from. It's a Tamizh novel by Tamizh Prabha so  only fair that this episode is completely in Tamizh.

Followed by the discussion on Pettai, Tamizh Prabha talks to Aditya about Pa. Ranjith's 2014 film MADRAS, starring Karthi, Kalaiarasan and Catherine Tresa. He has penned the script of the next Pa. Ranjith film starring Arya.

On Pettai with Kavitha and Arivu: 0 - 1:30:10

On Madras with Tamizh Prabha: From 1:30:11

Ep. 88: ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ vs ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ. Freedom or Expression?
Deepika Kinhal and Alok Prasanna Kumar talk to host Pavan Srinath about how Indians are being jailed for the freedom of speech and expression. Bangalorean Disha Ravi's shocking arrest by the Delhi Police on February 13, 2021 is but the latest of arrests, detentions, and cases against people who have done little more than express themselves freely. Indians are being arrested under the name of sedition, crimes against the State, offending religious sentiments, and other reasons. Most often, these arrests happen without following due procedure and without the proper application of the law. In some cases, laws like the UAPA - Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, also enable such action. Lawyers and researchers Deepika and Alok discuss how all this is possible in a Constitutional Republic that guarantees fundamental rights to all its citizens, on Episode 88 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast. Deepika and Alok work at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy in Bengaluru. To read more about the subject and discover related Kannada and English podcast episodes, visit tiny.cc/harate88.
