The Three Languages of Politics
Our political debates are not debates but are instead vehement expressions of tribal anger. That insight was the basis Arnold Kling to write this book. Since then, the insight has been reinforced. There is now widespread concern with the way political divisions are exacerbated by the communication that takes place in both traditional and social media. Politically interested people sort themselves into 3 coalitions: progressive, conservative and libertarian: - Progressives will communicate along the oppressor-oppressed axis. - A conservative will communicate along the civilization-barbarism axis.  - A libertarian will communicate along the liberty coercion axis. And... - Progressive assert moral superiority over conservatives and libertarians - Conservatives assert moral superiority over libertarians or progressives - Libertarians assert moral superiority over progressives and conservatives They cannot all be correct! And when they think in those terms, it is unlikely that they will sit down and work out solutions to shared problems. In politics, Arnold claims that progressives, conservatives and libertarians are tribes speaking different languages. The language that resonates with one tribe does not connect with others. As a result, political discussions do not lead to agreement. Instead, most political commentary serves to increase polarization.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Climbing The Mountain of Success
I was standing in a parking lot high in the Great Smokey Mountains surrounded by tourists and the smell of hot engines. I was about to take a hike to the Clingmans’ Dome observation tower - 6,644 feet above sea level. There is a sign at the beginning of the trail that warns hikers that the hike is considered strenuous, the average person will take 30-minutes to complete, and there are places to take a break along the way. While reading the sign, two conversions caught my attention - A couple that had driven hours to get there said, “They say it might be foggy at the top. Let’s not and say we did.” Then my wife said, “I think we should do it non-stop and in half the time. Who knows? It might be clear at the top.” With that, we headed up the hill with thighs ablaze. We passed hundreds of hikers giving up on the trailside benches; even more had turned back as they hiked through the fog, but we kept going. As we closed in on our goal of 15-minutes, we broke through the fog and found a beautiful day and a 100-mile view in all directions waiting for us when we arrived. That’s the thing about setting big goals and going for them. Even if you can’t see the outcome from your starting point, your goals and your mission will carry you to your vision - even if your legs hurt. When you get there, you’ll find that the journey up the mountain and the view from the top are always worth your effort. It’s also less crowded since most people never even start.

Mira Kirshenbaum | The Biggest Myth About Arguments & How to Deal With Finances In A Relationship
In today’s episode, we cover relationships and conflict resolution with Mira Kirshenbaum. Mira is the author of eleven books, the co-founder and clinical director of The Chestnut Hill Institute in Boston, an internationally recognized center for research and psychotherapy for couples, families and individuals, and has been a workshop leader and trainer for medical professionals at Harvard Medical School and other institutions.   Despite what Hollywood tells us, relationships are not easy and are not always pleasant, so why do couples fight, how do we resolve conflicts in a way that both partners can be satisfied with the outcome, and how do we reframe love in the 21st century to be a reasonable goal we can work toward?   What to Listen For   Why Do Couples Fight - 1:57    Why do couples fight and what do you need to stop doing to prevent future fights? Why do we imitate the power moves of our parents in our own relationships? What does it mean to feel disempowered in a relationship? How do people use distance to hurt their significant other and what can we do to overcome that?     The 8 Core Experiences of Love - 11:00 (starts with AJ saying, “When we think about fights…”)   What should you do everyday to build and maintain healthy relationships with the people you care about? What does it mean to be fair in a relationship? What question should you ask to find out how best to support your significant other when you’re not sure what to do? What does it mean to show respect for your significant other? Is passion a one time thing in a relationship, or is it cyclical?   Conflict Resolution in Relationships - 28:30 (starts with AJ saying, “Now we had Annie Duke on our show…”) How can you use quantification to solve arguments in your relationships? What is the 1-2-3 method and how can you use it to stop arguments from blowing up? What questions can you ask your partner to better understand their concerns about an issue you two are facing? What are the 2 magic questions you should always be ready to ask when you and your partner are facing an issue? What can you do to handle the financial side of a relationship so it doesn’t ruin a great partnership? What do power moves look like that revolve around money?   Reframing Love in the 21st Century - 46:00 What is the biggest myth about love in modern times and what can we do to reframe love so it is not based on fairy tales? How much work is necessary for maintaining a successful relationship? What are the 4 kinds of relationships and what can you learn from them so you know what to avoid in the future? What are the most important steps to take and conversations to have before you have children?   Relationships are often portrayed as the happy ending and the beginning of a trouble-free life filled with love and affection. But any healthy relationship is going to take a lot of work and communication - they don’t just happen. People are too different from one another to be able to come to a quick & easy agreement on everything. We all have different beliefs, thoughts, and expectations about love and relationships, and even life. We must be willing to learn about each other and if you want a relationship to last, both of you must put in the work to maintain it.   A Word From Our Sponsors Share your vulnerabilities, victories, and questions in our 17,000-member private Facebook group at theartofcharm.com/challenge. How to Enjoy Life More
On social media, it seems like everyone else has their life figured out. But the truth is, we're all a 'hot mess' from time to time. In this episode, be reminded that it's okay to be busy and hectic, as long as we honor the struggle, have fun in the process, and give ourselves the love we need to have a healthy perspective on life. On your path to being kind to yourself, consider this: "We tend to think that our vision for our life is an outcome where everything goes well, but the real question is are you living into the vision and enjoying it as it is happening? 366: My Clubhouse Welcome Party
Today, you’re in for a treat! This episode is quite a bit different than our usual format, but I promise it’s packed with a ton of value. It’s actually a replay taken from a 2-hour Clubhouse welcome party that I did for The Miracle Morning Community. In case you’re not familiar with Clubhouse, it’s basically an audio-only chatting app where individuals can host and join different conversations. It’s sort of like a live podcast, except the major difference is that the audience is able to raise their hand and be invited onto a virtual stage to interact and participate with the speakers. A few weeks ago, my friend Gary Henderson offered to host a welcome party as a way for me to connect and communicate with people in our community and beyond. During this 2-hour session, you’ll hear an interview between me and a group of carefully selected moderators. We then shift gears and open up the dialogue to a Q&A format so people listening could join in. We touch on A LOT of Miracle Morning related topics, but in a way that you’ve never experienced before. The beauty of Clubhouse is that it’s not just a one-way discussion. I’m getting questions in real-time that people are struggling with, and through this platform, we get to work out the answers together. KEY TAKEAWAYS * What does it mean to elevate our consciousness and how does that collectively elevate the consciousness of humanity? * How to take control of your inner world. What happens on the outside doesn’t have to dictate what happens on the inside! * Why every challenge we face is an opportunity to help other people ease their suffering. * Why your resistance to reality is the cause of all of your emotional pain and suffering - and what you can do instead to overcome life’s biggest challenges. * Stories from the most difficult moments of my life, including my recent struggle with depression and losing my will to live. * Why our dependence on smartphones is detrimental to our mental and emotional well being - and where I believe we should be focusing our attention instead! * How to transform your state of mind at ANY moment, using Emotional Optimization Meditation. * 3 steps you can use to create real results with your affirmations and visualizations - and the 2 biggest reasons why most affirmations never come true. * How I use the S.A.V.E.R.S to optimize my own mental and emotional well being. * Q&A with a ton of Clubhouse listeners!
