Sweeten Founder Jean Brownhill on the New Rules of Renovation and the Materials to Get You There
Play • 39 min

Jean Brownhill, founder and CEO of Sweeten, really understands homeowners’ needs when jumping into a renovation project. She learned by personal experience both as an architect and a first-time homeowner while renovating her brownstone in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. After learning from a mis-hired contractor and her own mistakes, and seeing an opportunity in the market to empower homeowners and contractors, Jean decided to launch Sweeten in 2011. She provides an invaluable service—connecting homeowners with vetted and certified contractors and providing tools to aid in the process, including budgeting, bidding guidelines, financial protection, and planning—and is an inspiring innovator and visionary. Sweeten experienced massive growth in 2020, with so many people at home really experiencing their spaces and planning how to make them function better. Specializing in projects big and small, Jean and her team have seen it all when it comes to renovations. So if you’re thinking of taking one on, listen in…you’ll want to take notes.

Grab details at Thank you for you supporting the Love Food Podcast! Dear Food, I know exactly when our journey began. I had an anonormally skinny ballerina body and had gained a few pounds over the summer. I knew what I had to do. My parents always did diets so I figured it was just a part of growing up. Little did I know that losing those few pounds would lead to a horrible relationship with you and an unhealthy amount of weight gain. I used to not think about you. When I was bored, you weren’t the first one I went to. You were fuel not an addiction. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be where I am now. I have drifted so far and our relationship is so weak. I hate you but love you at the same time. You control me and I cannot contain myself around you. I’m addicted. You control my thoughts and take up my whole life. The more I pull away, the more I am attracted to you. I’m not sure why I go to you. Maybe it’s my low self-esteem, or my body image issues, or my constant want and need to look like society’s beauty standards. I feel that you are an escape I have to run from my toxic thoughts about my body because no one else cares. I feel like I cannot even continue my daily life because of the hold you have on me. I hate myself because of you but I can’t stop going back to you. I’ve tried to limit you but our relationship seems to get worse and worse. You were enjoyable, now I dread you. I’m fearful of what you will do to me. I’m fearful of how far I will go with you. You used to be a natural instinct that didn’t matter to me, now I can’t go five minutes without wanting you or thinking about how you ruin me. I guess the truth is…you aren’t the problem. Its me. I abuse you. I hate myself so I become overwhelmed and run to you. I’m not sure why I go to you. It seems counterproductive, but I’m in hopes of finding out why you have such a hold on me. I am guilty after going to you. I am humiliated, even if no one else knows. All I want is a healthy relationship with you and my body so I can move on with my life. 33. Speaking UP about Mental Health Funding - Panel Discussions
This panel discussion with the EPIC Network (Expert Psychologists Interagency Clinical Network) focuses on why four agencies decided to come together in order to lobby the government to make changes to the mental health model as we currently experience it in Alberta. EPICS Mission The Expert Psychologists Interagency Clinical Network (EPIC) agencies include Kells Counselling, Insight Psychological, Dreamcatcher Nature Assisted Therapy, and Cornerstone Counselling. EPIC is a grassroots group representing over 60 private psychologists in Alberta. Together they strive to promote the benefits of psychology in the Edmonton area and help all Albertans access psychological care. In 2019 EPIC started a petition and submitted stating that changes needed to be made to the publics’ ability to access mental health.  The petition asks the Alberta Government to: 1. Fully fund mental health care interventions with a psychologist. 2. Allow psychologists to direct bill AHS for psychological services. Read and/or sign the EPIC Petition here: READ MORE: SHOWNOTES AND TRANSCRIPT CONNECT WITH PANELIST: Janet Ryan-Newell, M.Ed, Registered Psychologist Eileen Bona, M.Ed, Registered Psychologist Sheila Stauffer, B.A, Registered Social Worker Insight Counselling ---- CONNECT WITH THE HOST: Tia Bell is a Registered Social Worker and Personal Development Coach who is sharing the journey of entrepreneurship and what it is really like owning your own business. Stories with Heart: Jessi Hempel of LinkedIn and Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel
Jessi Hempel always knew she wanted to be a writer. From the time she won her grade school writing contest, she knew she was destined to share her gift of the written word. It was a surprise, then, when her success as a tech writer for such magazines as Fortune and Wired ceased to feel as fulfilling as it once had. Many people reach this point in their careers; the excitement ebbs, the shine wears off. Few people take the leap and try something new. Jessi, however, did just that. Spurred by personal hardship, she seized the opportunity to dive into the unknown, striking forth in a new direction with the knowledge that she could never again pursue work that didn’t resonate with the deepest levels of her heart. Ever the storyteller, she is now the host of Webby nominated podcast Hello Monday with Jessi Hempel, in addition to working as senior news editor at large at LinkedIn. Thanks for listening! Don't forget to pre-order Rebecca's new book, Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success. Email your receipt to to get the cost of the book as a credit on! It's a win-win!
