We've been reading scripture, one chapter after another, for a long time. This is not academic, or bureaucratic - it's devotional, parochial. We read to inform and express our human experience. We don't stand above it, in the academy, or try to control it, in the bureaucracy. We join the chorus, finding our voice within that great choir over millennia.
5-10 minutes a day, to start or end the day, or start or end a meal, around a table or in front of a fire, this is a domestic piety of Protestant traditions. You could engage it once a week, for 30-60 minutes - a modern variation, offered here on Sundays, collecting the 6 chapters that we'll read a day at a time for the coming Monday to Saturday.
That's the plan for 2022: alternating each of the Torah, the first 5 books of the Hebrew bible, with each of the Gospels, the first 4 books of the Christian scriptures. Genesis, Matthew, Exodus, Mark, Leviticus, Luke, Numbers, John, D…
