Happy New SuperCoach Year!
It's a rather subdued welcome to 2023! Catfish and Joe Fitz ease into the new year with a focus on the most expensive players in SuperCoach for 2023. To do this, we've had a bit of a review of 2022's opening rounds and how the most expensive players for last year fared compared to their great seasons in 2021 (that gave them those prices to start 2022 with). There are some surprising discoveries and revelations for both of us in this list!
Things ended up a bit wild over the offseason in real life for the past few months so we weren't as active as we'd hoped to be, but we're off and running for 2023 and you'll be seeing us more regularly soon!

Round 7 was a round of 'haves and have nots', although the list of 'haves' last week really included the likes of Talakai, Cleary, Papenhuyzen, Isaiah Papali'i and several others. NRL SuperCoach 2022 is LIVE + initial reactions to the new changes
Bear is back! His first hit-up of 2022 this episode as he joins Catfish and Joe Fitz to dissect the changes that have been revealed to us after the official launch of NRL SuperCoach for 2022. Lots of great tweaks including obviously the higher trade numbers and the trade boost, as well as other benefits for the Draft side of the game.
We also tackle some of the more strategic questions thrown up via our Champs in our Champs discord - looking at whether we need to prioritise our salary cap usage differently in light of the scoring trends from the past two seasons, and look at whether there is any increased need for depth in this current COVID-19 environment. Overpriced and underpriced players for 2022 - part 2
Catfish and Joe Fitz are back for part 2 of this important topic, and they're joined by reigning 2021 NRL SuperCoach champion Tim Moodie to look through which players jump out as either overpriced, or more importantly, underpriced, coming into the 2022 season. This might be due to discounts applied due to the number of games played, or a significant change in role, bench or injury-affected games, or perhaps it's due to potentially unsustainable levels of output and regression to the mean is inevitable.
It's the halfback, five eighth, centre/wing and fullback positions this time and there are are some spicy takes from early on. Overpriced and underpriced players for 2022 - Part 1
Happy New Year and here's hoping that 2022 will be kinder to all of us!
Joe Fitz is back and joins Catfish to go through the hooker, front row forward and second row forward positions and look through which players jump out as either overpriced, or more importantly, underpriced, coming into the 2022 season. This might be due to discounts applied due to the number of games played, or a significant change in role, bench or injury-affected games, or perhaps it's due to potentially unsustainable levels of output and regression to the mean is inevitable.

A not-so-successful 2021 season review (ft. Rob, coach of 'Centurions')
Catfish tackles a bit of a different season review, where we speak to Rob, the coach of 'Centurions' who was repeatedly mentioned on the Champions podcast throughout the year as the leader of our group competition, but unfortunately fell away right at the death. A very successful season in most SuperCoaches' eyes (finished 39th overall) but arguably still a disappointment given Rob was leading at one point and in the top 4 for the majority of the season.
It's a different type of insight and a fascinating look into how things can so easily go wrong, even when you get almost everything right! Some slight audio issues but hopefully still can be easily listened to - Rob has a lot of interesting thoughts and insights to share!

Coaches can clearly cause chaotic changes
Can this year get any harder? It's like the SuperCoach gods are testing us to see how far we can be stretched before we snap and lose our minds! But in some (slightly sadistic) way, this is fun. More injuries and suspensions but my SuperCoach team is still doing better than the Broncos
Catfish and Bear help you sift through all the Round 14 teamlists while trying to make heads and tails of weird coach rotations and selections. They wrestle with conundrums like what's going on with the Roosters, the Eels and just how bad are the Queensland teams at the moment? If you listen close enough you can actually pinpoint the second when his (Catfish) heart rips in half too.

Nothing more certain than death, taxes and injuries derailing our SuperCoach teams
Chaos reigns supreme in the Round 13 teamlists, as injuries, suspensions and mysterious droppings cause havoc in almost every single NRL team this week. Our SuperCoach teams are also stretched to breaking point and that means it's MOVING WEEK if you can get your team set up right and nail the usual decisions. What's the Matterson? A massive headache, that's what!
Round 12 teamlists have thrown a few spanners in the works as usual, and we're really starting to get into the business end of the shortened 2020 competition. Catfish goes it alone this week after Bear had to look after his family, and there's plenty to think about and work out. Catfish wraps the Round 11 injuries with the assistance of the NRLPhysio; unpacks the teamlists by himself, including some suggestions on how to handle the difficult Ryan Matterson dilemma; and finally lays out some strategy on how he sees most teams looking at the moment and identifies where the likely edge is going to be to keep climbing those rankings (or chasing down that overall leader too!). It doesn't get any easier this week and while the Round 8 teamlists aren't as brutal as last week, there's still PLENTY to deal with due to injuries to critical players, suspensions and other fun stuff too. The day before SuperCoach Christmas V2.0 (feat. NRLPhysio)
It feels like the start of the year, we've just finished the preseason and we're about to set our Round 1 teams. With so long without footy, and with five trades on offer, it almost feels like a chance to 'reset' teams for the start of the 2020 season. Keep Calm but #GetHyped - the 4th Self Isolation Episode
In what is hopefully our last self isolation episode, Bear and Catfish spend a long time unpacking the ins and outs of the NRL, and NRL SuperCoach, season restart. We talk through the potential SuperCoach impacts of the:-
* shortened season;
* immediate 'super trade week';
* non-reduction of overall trades;
* one-ref system and the '6 again' rule (sorry Raiders fans);
* lack of byes;
* setup of the home/away season, including the expected lack of fans; and
* lack of draw for now.
We also talk through our (current) proposed five trades, explaining our intentions behind them and what we are planning to do moving forward.

Keep Calm and #StayInside - the 2nd Self Isolation episode
Ha, ha, ha, ha staying inside, staying inside. What, not a Bee Gees fan? What a time to be alive these days as we bring you the second "Self Isolation" episode during this little hiatus. No comments on COVID-19 this week, it's other depressing chat - with some positive - as Catfish and Bear break down our Round 1 teams and what has gone right, wrong and in-between after two weeks of the season.
We celebrate the calls we got right, the ones we got wrong (Catfish breaks down the actual impact of him starting with Damien Cook over Api Koroisau for starters) and the ones that are still "TBC" (i.e. we can't tell after just two weeks).
Catfish ponders some potential POD/anti-POD strategies to try catch up and we also take some wild guesses based off just two rounds of data from 2020 as to who we might see finish up the top in each position (assuming we get some footy back, and there is a shortened season.

Keep Calm and #StayHome - the Self Isolation episodes
And just like that, the season is... on hold? We're still here and we're going to keep coming at you all with (semi) regular episodes even during this 'hiatus'. Giving the people what they want while they're self-isolating (hopefully!!!) or if you're a frontline worker, thank you for your continued hard work and sacrifice in this difficult time!
We talk a few key points from Round 2, and then we talk the suspension of the NRL season, sharing some preliminary thoughts on how it might impact the NRL SuperCoach season once it restarts later in the year (fingers crossed we still get some footy and SuperCoach, even if the season is reduced)! Think injuries being healed, fitness concerns, the lack of byes and what we may end up having to do as the season prepares to restart later in the year.

Keep Calm and Carry On - it's only Round 1
The preseason was long but in a flash, Round 1 has already come and gone! It was a crazy round with a lot going on, but SuperCoaches, let's not overreact. Catfish and Bear are here to tell you all to calm your farm and discuss what your focus should really be in the first two weeks (spoiler: rage trading is NOT one of the things you should be doing), so that you can use your trades as effectively as possible to set up the year.

Like last year, we go through each selection and explain/clarify our thought process behind it. There's a few interesting picks from both teams including some discussion on starting with at least one non-playing reserve (NPR) this year. We also discuss some potential strategies on maximising points at fullback.

No Half Measures To Winning NRL SuperCoach
Time is running out to finalise preparations for the start of the NRL SuperCoach season! SuperCoach Christmas (a.k.a. the first proper TLT of the year) is almost upon us and there are still SO many question marks this year! Catfish and Bear try make sense of the halves position though - reflecting firstly on how both of us used the halfback and five eighth position so differently yet to great effect in our respective Champion seasons, and then trying to apply some of those takeaways to 2020.
