The Changes that Come with Cancer with Dr. Sagar Shah
Dr. Sagar Shah is a general dentist in the Bay Area. He was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma in May 2020 at the height of the pandemic and lockdowns. He is currently in remission and has started an Instagram page called myheadisacanvas, where he uses his chemo-induced baldness as a canvas for paintings and art pieces done by his wife. Sagar earned his DDS from NYU College of Dentistry.
In this episode, Sagar shares how his life changed after being diagnosed with cancer during the pandemic. He describes the emotional and mental toll the disease took on his career and his perspective on life. He explains why having Stage IV cancer is not a death sentence and how he has prepared for the worst-case scenario. I remember visiting dentistry forums in the 2000s—way before social media was even a term—and reading success stories of other dentists with dental sleep. My first few years as a dentist didn’t involve dental implants, and most of it was due to my lack of surgical confidence. It wasn’t like I needed to include dental implants in my practice - business was booming without it. Then, the Crash of 2008 happened, and it opened my eyes to the importance of offering a variety of services that cater to a broader market. One of these is dental implants, a procedure that, to this day, not many dentists provide. One of the things we need to focus right now is that we are truly closer to being back at work than we aren’t. We are also competing against unemployment. It’s recommended to have an honest and empathetic discussion with our team members.

Medical Billing and Dentistry with Mr. Hootan Shahidi
There are three ways to grow revenue in a dental practice. Of the three the best way is to increase reimbursement for procedures you are already doing and/or doing for free. Medical billing has the potential for just that - it can increase reimbursement for existing procedures (medical often pays better than dental), it can help you get paid for procedures that we typically write off (because dental insurance doesn't cover or 'bundles'), and it can open whole new arenas of procedures because medical insurance will greatly reduce patient out of pocket (sleep apnea therapy, TMJ orthotics, infant lip/tongue tie, etc).

Hat number 1 is the dentist as an employee. Hat number 2 is the dentist as a leader.
Many people think that a leader is only the person who owns the practice. I think this is a misconception, and in my opinion whether you are an associate, a hospital dentist…or whatever your role may have, you always wear both hats.
All dentist are leaders, regardless of whether they own the practice. Plus, all dentists who own the practice still have a role as an employee in the practice.
