The Philistines Were For Sword Control
The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Trying To Come Up With Names For Our Ninth Child
My wife Lauren and I are expecting our ninth child in November. That may seem like a long way off, but we are talking about possible name choices.
To the end of helping us to brainstorm, and ultimately make a decision, I have built a spreadsheet, complete with our first eight children's first and middle names, their meanings, what initials are used up thus far, and how many times each letter of the alphabet occurs for those initials, and even how many syllables there are to each name.
In this way, I have identified all the letters of the English alphabet which we have not used any names starting with, and come up with possible choices which would at least part-ways diversify our family along those lines.
After all, God's Word tells us a good name is a very precious thing, so it's well worth the time and attention invested, even if thinking outside the box occasionally reminds my wife and I of why there are boxes in the first place, since not everything should go in them.

Concerning Dennis Prager's Commentary On Pornography and Whether Lust Is Adultery
As part of a series on the Old Testament book of Exodus, Jordan Peterson recently posted a clip of a discussion he had with Dennis Prager and Os Guinness, among others, on the question of God's commands regarding lust and adultery.
In the course of the discussion, a number of points of interest came to light, wherein questions of what to make of pornography and lust resulted in Prager pointing out that, as a Jew who sees only the Old Testament as authoritative Scripture, adultery is not the right term for the sexual interest a man might take in an unmarried woman.
Christians, by contrast, have often in the last 2,000 years pointed to what Jesus says in Matthew 5:27-28.

What the Ten Plagues of Egypt Should Teach Us About the Character of God

So we read early on in the account of God telling Moses and Aaron to go and speak to Pharaoh, telling him to let the people of Israel go out of the land of Egypt. That is to say, there is not even a possibility of success, humanly speaking, in the near-term.
Pragmatists and prudential types would have given up straight away, knowing the message would not be heeded. They might have bided their time for years or decades more, hoping and praying for a more opportune administration. Yet God said 'You shall speak all that I command you."
Where God Himself said He would harden Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not listen to them, so that God could display His power to Egypt, and Israel, and to all generations, some today find fault with God. They say that is cruel, or unjust, or unfair.

In my Bible reading for this morning, I came to the story of Joseph and his brothers. All sons of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, in the book of Genesis we find a pattern which is interesting to observe for the sinful human heart, particularly when jealousy takes root, then boils over to hatred.

Consider the curious case of two women, one named Wisdom, and the other named Folly. They are similar in some ways. Both alike call to the simple, and to him who lacks sense, from the highest places of the town they both live in.
After that, the contrasts are stark.
Wisdom has her own house, livestock, wine, and table. Moreover, she has young women, presumably in her employment. Moreover, she is a woman who is clearly capable and active. She builds, hews, slaughters, mixes, sets, and sends. That is, she has means and plans, and is generous. I recently came across a YouTube short of Spanish tennis pro Rafael Nadal being asked why the best women tennis players are paid less. His answer both amuses and intrigues me, including the refreshing admission that he doesn't know, but also looping in other sports, and even the fashion industry, where the top female models make more than the top male models.
Let's take this question a bit further, though, and talk about why top athletes of either of the two sexes make so much money for playing sports, and how this has to do with the selling of tickets and merchandise, as well as advertising and sponsorships.
So why would male athletes make more money from sponsorships than female athletes typically do? Part of this comes back again to the question of ticket sales and merchandising, which is directly the result of popular interest in watching men or women play sports.

Strength, Wisdom, and Kevin DeYoung's Review of 'The Case for Christian Nationalism'
Megan Quinn published a rather fascinating article at YourTango.com last week, about a social experiment reality TV show from the UK, in which 10 boys and 10 girls were placed together in a house, in two separate instances, without adults present, except to monitor from outside, and the houses fully furnished, and stocked with food and cooking implements, and also toys and crafts.
The results were just as I would have predicted as a father of seven sons, that at the end of the five days the house of boys was a great big mess, and the house of girls was clean and tidy. In the former case, there was rough play, and lots of sugary food eaten, and also bullying. In the latter case, one girl immediately stepped up to coordinating the meal prep, and all the girls cleaned up after themselves and comforted one another when sad.
It would be fascinating to see another experiment run with girls and boys dropped off in the wilderness, with tools and weapons and survival training, but no shelter…

Biblical Reasoning Relative Border Security
In Luke 11:14-23, Jesus answers a muttering in relation to his casting out a demon, and thereby allowing a man who was mute to speak, that he was casting out demons by the prince of demons. This is a significant passage in several ways.
For starters, the fact of maligning the character and motivations of Jesus, by wild speculation that he is in league with evil, is an exceedingly wicked way to respond, instead of celebration and worship, to the Son of God making a man free and whole again who had been oppressed to that point.
Another interesting thing is that this passage is what Abraham Lincoln famously referenced as president, in relation to the Civil War, as the Union and Confederacy squared off, over the issues of slavery and the rights of individual states to permit or regulate the institution as they saw fit, whatever the federal government had to say.

Not All That Glitters Is Gold, But Gold Still Does Glitter Too
Thinking about the historic vote for House Speaker yesterday and today, a quote from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring comes to mind.

What does it mean when a state legalizes "human composting," as New York has now joined Washington, Colorado, California, Oregon, and Vermont in doing? Stated reasons surely must come into giving an answer to that question.
So, in this case, what does it mean when the stated reason for the legalization of "human composting," where instead of traditional burial or cremation one is turned into compost for plants, in a "more environmentally friendly way," is, at its root, a backwards and upside-down view of the relationship between Man and the rest of God's Creation?

Lamentations 3 has been on my mind, including, but not limited to, the fact that Yahweh's mercies are new every morning.
The fact that the name of Yahweh is a strong tower that the righteous run into and are safe sits within a context that, at some points, is remarkably specific and bleak otherwise.
For instance, consider the inclusion of a reference to arrows being shot into kidneys, or the destruction and fate of the daughters of my people and city.
Nevertheless, and only all the more, remember and meditate on what Isaiah 3 says.
"Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds."

Sundry Summary Thoughts About Yes and No On New Year's Eve 2022
As another year draws to a close, and my household ponders afresh our habit of reviewing the major events of the last 12 months before considering our plans for the next, it occurs to me that planning boils down in the end to a series of Yes and No answers to various and multitudinous questions.
Andrew Matthias, for instance. Lauren's and my seventh son, and eighth child, was born to us in the first month of 2022. That fact is the summary conclusion of Yes being the answer to some questions, and No being the answer to others.
For another example, our two eldest sons, Josiah and Eli, spending a week over the summer, visiting with our old friends in Montana
For just one more illustration, my job change in October involved announcing a No to continued employment with one company, and an answer of Yes to a different company.

Five Out of Five Mullets Return to Valheim
After several weeks of intensive enjoyment from when it was first released in February of last year, my sons and I mostly gave up on Valheim, the best game of 2021 according to PC Gamer, after having some issues with the reliability of our private server. With a few brief, scattered exceptions, we haven't played it since.
Yesterday, we returned, to the wonderful world of Viking survival, to begin again with our characters where we left off. We were not disappointed.
It's still early, with a mere 4-5 hours so far for Josiah, Eli, Sol, Dan, and myself played together last night; but we're excited to have a fresh map, and build a new fort, and explore what updates to the game, as well as time since we last played, make at once both familiar and uncharted.

Auld Lang Syne for Eric Metaxas, Kings Charles and Lemuel, and Government Policy
In the lead-in to the part of Proverbs 31 concerning the woman who fears the Lord, not as often remarked on in my experience is how the mother of King Lemuel asks him three times in a row what he is doing.
Always in Scripture, when you see a word or phrase repeated two times in a row, it's veracity and importance are being greatly emphasized. If you see it repeated thrice, you best listen up and pay attention.
This is no less the case here, when Lemuel is warned to be wary of the influence on good judgment of both women and drink. We also, along with Lemuel, are wise to consider the wisdom of the admonition from his mother dear, to not give our strength or mind to either, without reservation, or become a slave to our desire for them. Rather, we must remember our duty before God, to do justice, and to "open your mouth" for those whose rights are being trampled on.

Proverbs 31 Relative a Hellcat, Horizon Forbidden West, and a Pink Xbox Controller
Lauren asked for a handgun this Christmas. Initially, we eyed the Kimber Micro 9, and the Sig P365, and both made a favorable impression on us, when we looked at the selection Scheels had while out celebrating our 16th anniversary. When it came time to buy, however, in the week before Christmas, I ended up getting her the Springfield Hellcat instead.
At 11+1 capacity, the Hellcat holds plenty of rounds in its double-stacked magazine, compared with what is more typical for a CCW semi-auto. I also like the two-stage trigger, in the respect that accidental discharge should not be an issue quite like it could be without. I also like that this Hellcat in particular is already ready to have an optic installed; and on that front, if we keep it, I will be eyeing a little red-dot sight for faster target acquisition.

'White Christmas,' the title track from the 1953 film by the same name, communicates such a simple sentiment. To my way of thinking, if we would sing it, we have everything else we need to celebrate Christmas. The only thing left is a fresh blanket of snow.

Montana Nursing Home Closures, the Merchant of Death, and Cameron Bertuzzi
Nursing homes in Montana are closing this year, and I keep hearing about it from Billings Gazette. The latest one in Miles City makes eleven so far in 2022. And presumably the elderly and otherwise incapable of caring for themselves cannot be taken in by family, or else they wouldn't be in nursing homes. Right?
