Sometimes to save a river, you have to buy it
In this week's podcast, we'll visit with the dynamic co-founder and president of Western Rivers Conservancy, Sue Doroff [34:50]. Over the past 30 years, Sue and her small, lean staff have protected nearly 400 miles of rivers with names like the Madison, Hoh, Klamath, and John Day--rivers beloved by fly fishers. If you've ever parked at Three Dollar Bridge on the Madison River, you can than the Western Rivers Conservancy for protecting that stretch of river from development and for maintaining public access. Find out about their unique special sauce and how they do this. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and tips from listeners: I know you should keep a fish upstream of you when fighting it. What do you do when fishing downstream? A warning and tip from a listener on the dangers of shelf ice in winter Should I use big articulated streamers like the Drunk & Disorderly for steelhead? Is a 9-foot 8-weight rod a good one for wading the beaches of Florida? I don't want to fish weighted flies and I don't want to fish more than one fly. How can I get a good dead drift with my wet flies and nymphs? I mainly tie steelhead flies, but for a trout fishing trip, is it more economical to buy or tie some dry flies? When fishing across several lines of current with a floating line, what technique should I use to get a good drift? How do you deal with casting an indicator rig when the indicator is set 6 feet or more above your flies? A great tip on tapering synthetic fibers when tying streamers. Should I use hemostats or small pliers for trout fishing? What are the pros and cons of bead chain vs. solid metal eyes?

036 - Dr. Doug Kechijian - Air Force Pararescueman (PJ), Physical Therapist & Performance Coach, Co-founder of Resilient Performance Systems
"These Things We Do, That Others May Live." Dr. Doug Kechijian (Dr. K) is a former Pararescueman, or PJ, in the US Air Force and now a Doctor of Physical Therapy and CEO / co-founder of Resilient Systems; he talks professionalism, procedure, self discipline, human performance and getting the call with Jason and Rich for Episode 036. In his senior year at Brown -- not a typical military feeder school -- the events of 9/11 steered Doug onto a different path in medicine than the one he had been planning. He was particularly drawn to the mission of the PJs. Through his 13-year military service in the “911 of the military,” including being named as the Air National Guard's 2015 Outstanding Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Doug learned the importance of smart training, being really really prepared and strategies to cope with challenges (medical and otherwise). Dr. K now works with athletes and operators at every level from Major League Baseball to the NCAA to Special Operations Forces. He has been featured in Men’s Health advocating for rucking along with other items from his “menu” of training (mobility, structure, power and capacity -- all with variety). He shares his philosophy of human performance and approach to physical therapy -- which is informed by his time at the tip of the spear so is grounded, accessible and a little different than most. Boris Baer - Center for Integrative Bee Research (S3, E40)
Our guest this week is Boris Baer, Professor of Entomology at UC Riverside. Boris is the recent recipient of a $900,000 grant from the University of California’s Office of the President. He is the Principal Investigator of a four-campus network of bee researchers and engineers to boost dwindling honey bee populations working in the Center for Integrative Bee Research (CIBER). Boris is working with a team of researchers and students looking at the interaction of nutritional supplements when bees have been exposed to pesticides, and how to harness the natural honey bee microbiome to this assault. The research team will also be looking at the successful genomes of honey bees with influence of African genes that have developed increased resistance to the common diseases that currently plague the industry. As part of the grant, researchers from Davis and Merced campuses are looking to develop a breeding program to produce bees better able to cope with environmental stress. A second goal is to develop medications and treatment for sick bees. A third group is coordinating efforts to develop tools beekeepers can use to better monitor what is going on inside their hives. Essentially, electronic veterinarians. Listen today to hear all about the leading edge of practical research is taking the beekeeper of the near future!
