CONTENT WARNING: Debbie Jo's featured lady this week publicly discusses her attempted suicide. Please listen with caution if you may be triggered by details of attempted suicide.
The Non Moms are personally very excited about this episode. Why? For starters, there are two big, important announcements at the top of the show. We're not giving you any spoilers, if you want to know what the haps are, you gotta let us in your ear holes!
Secondly, the ladies accidentally picked a theme -- overcoming addiction and being a badass at life. Kelly and Debbie Jo never know who each of them will talk about until they sit down to record in the virtual studio, so this week was a special coincidence and surprise. They both picked ladies who are publicly open about their struggles with their addiction, mental health, and overall wellness journeys, and each of the ladies discussed has built a large audience for whom they provide inspiration, commiseration, and laughter.
Kelly kicks things off by telling Debbie Jo everything she already knew and maybe didn't about Queen of all Non Moms, Karen Kilgariff. Most people know Karen as half of the Podcast, My Favorite Murder (and it is no secret that the Non Moms are huge fans) but she is so much more than just that. She's done a lot of cool shit! Including being in active recovery from alcohol, amphetamines, and diet pills. You also get to hear about the impact that Karen has had on Kelly, personally, as she has battled her physical and mental health ailments and recovery for the past (nearly) two years.
Debbie Jo then tells Kelly all about Tiffany Jenkins, who you will most likely recognize as the woman behind the magic of Juggling the Jenkins and her super funny and relevant Fab, Fit, Fun unboxing videos. Tiffany has been very open about her struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, and her journey into sobriety, motherhood, and being a wife... all at the same time. (Seriously, certifiable badassery.) Tiffany has created an incredible virtual community of moms being real and honest about mom shit, and she pulls no punches. The Non Moms have mad love for her.
Both of our chosen ladies use comedy as a way to bring healing and community to women around the world... remind you of anyone else you know? (We hope so, or we're doing this very wrong.)
