The Balloon Method – A Mind Exercise

Okay, now let’s get started; For best results you may want to sit down somewhere where you won’t be interrupted for a few minutes and close your eyes.

What I’d like you to do is to focus on the pain you’re experiencing for a moment and as you’re thinking about the pain I’d like you to use your imagination and imagine you can transform it into the shape and form of any object you like. It can be anything however for this exercise let’s use a balloon…

So imagine that the pain you’re experiencing as the shape of a balloon…
Imagine that balloon clearly … so real that you could touch it.
and now let’s give it some detail…
What does the balloon look like… Imagine it clearly in your mind…
What color is it…?
What shape is it…?
Imagine the light shining off of it…
How big is the balloon right now…?

Now that you’ve imagined the pain as the shape of this balloon imagine the balloon getting a little bigger….
Not enough to hurt you but just enough to see it change size…
Now I’d like you to imagine this balloon getting smaller… as you watch it shrink right before your eyes…
And as it shrinks you notice that the pain is shrinking as well…
Continue to imagine this balloon getting smaller and smaller…
Shrinking more and more…
You notice that it’s now about half the size of that was initially and you’re beginning to feel relief…
As you continue watching it gets smaller and smaller… until it gets so small that you can’t even see it anymore and the pain had subsided completely…

Both it and the balloon are completely gone

You feel so happy that you were able to eliminate it on your own…

Congratulations!

You can do this exercise in the future on your own but if you don’t like using a balloon you can imagine the pain as the shape of any thing you’d like.

Here’s a brief explanation of why this technique works so well:
Pain is subjective which means it’s something you feel or imagine but you can’t show it to someone it’s not a physical thing you can hold. So if you can change its nature from subjective you are in fact changing what it is which is no longer pain. Similar to when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Once the transformation has occurred it is a different creature and cannot go back to being a caterpillar again.
When you use your imagination to imagine the pain as an object such as a balloon you are doing just that.

It’s important to understand that the subconscious mind sees real memories or occurrences and imagined ones as the same value.

This can be seen by watching movie goers leave a theater after watching a horror film and they appear to be very nervous, jumpy and horrified and after watching a sappy love film seem to be relaxed and amorous. The imagined events seem real to them and they seem to place themselves into the situations.
