The Functional Medicine Approach to Heart Disease
We often think of aging as synonymous with decline. We believe that having memory loss, becoming slow and less agile, experiencing joint pain and stiffness, increasing diseases, and need for medications are all viewed as ‘normal’ as we age. The truth is, becoming overweight, sick, and slow are NOT inevitable.  We need to reframe how we view aging. The current theory that aging is just a slow and painful decline until we die is outdated and archaic. Currently, our healthspans do not equal our lifespans. Your healthspan is how well you live, your lifespan is how long you live. So while it’s true that human bodies cannot live forever, there are proven scientific methods to extend our healthspan, and that’s really what matters. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, we are sharing episode 2 from our 8-part docu-series, the Longevity Roadmap, hosted by Dr. Mark Hyman. In the Longevity Roadmap, you’ll learn all about the prevalent diseases of aging that decrease healthspan, how the conventional approach to these conditions is backwards, how to identify and treat the root cause of aging using the Functional Medicine approach, and more importantly, how to improve your healthspan to live a long, vibrant life. In Episode 2, we’ll discuss the biggest killer of our time: cardiovascular disease. There is so much misinformation out there about what causes cardiovascular disease. We’ll talk about innovative testing and recommendations around prevention.    We’ll also cover:  -The misconceptions around heart disease. -How to identify the root cause of heart disease.  -The best ways to protect and support your heart.    This 8-part docu-series, explores the Functional Medicine approach to heart disease, cancer, balancing hormones, and brain health, how to eat for longevity, and innovative therapies that have been shown to increase healthspan. Join Dr. Hyman and other experts and doctors at The UltraWellness Center to learn how to create optimal health and Become Young at Any Age. Suzanne Stone
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Suzanne Stone from Tarzana, CA. This episode is brought to you by Ritual. You deserve to know what’s in your multivitamin. That’s why Ritual is offering my listeners 10% off during your first 3 months. Visit ritual.com/IFSTORIES to start your Ritual today! Suzanne shares that she began her first diet at age ten. Her father, worried she would be overweight as an adult, put her on a low carb diet. Suzanne recalls, "My father made me do 500 fast jump ropes every day. He would sit there and count every one of them." Years of diet plans, counting calories, and diet pills followed. She would lose, then eventually gain everything back.  Suzanne was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2012 and put on thyroid medication. Her thyroid needed to be removed, but before surgery, her doctor gave her an iodine treatment. She was also taken off her thyroid medication for six weeks. This whole process was done twice, causing a 20-pound weight gain each time, along with severe lethargy and major inflammation. After a long recovery, she tried various diets to lose the weight, but struggled to go back to the diets that were once successful.  In March of 2019, her friend Fred (also a DDD Facebook group moderator) shared about intermittent fasting on Facebook. She had heard about IF from another friend, but thought it sounded crazy! Desperate for something to help with her severe allergies, Suzanne decided to give IF a try. She read Delay, Don't Deny and The Obesity Code, and began with a 16:8 protocol. Almost two years later, Suzanne has lost 45 pounds. She's gone from a size 14 to a size 6. Her health has greatly improved. She takes very little allergy and thyroid medication now, and no longer needs her inhaler. She has mental clarity, feels more confident, and craves healthier foods. Suzanne started a Facebook group called A Valley Girl's Guide to Intermittent Fasting.  The advice she'd give to new IFers: Learn patience. Diet mentality takes a lot of time to change. You have to really work hard to get past it. Weight loss won't be fast. It is a lifestyle, not a diet. When you change the way you look at it, then you're not as worried when it doesn't happen fast!  Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Keto Savage Robert Sikes | This is how you build muscle on the keto diet KKP: 227
Today, I am blessed to have here with me a lifetime natural competitive bodybuilder, Robert Orion Sikes. Robert started Keto Savage to help motivate and educate others about the importance of following your passions and getting the results you want. Robert wakes up early, he works his A@$ off, and he sees results. Robert is no different than you; any success he has experienced this far is attainable for anybody willing to put in the work. We live in an era where everything is automatic, everything is superficial, and everything is expected for nothing. That life does not create greatness; it destroys it. The Keto Savage site will empower those who crave intensity, dedication, discipline, hard work, and sacrifice. In this episode, Robert Orion Sikes reveals the inspiration behind his brand, Keto Savage. As one of the first keto bodybuilders, Robert knew he needed to document his journey. Robert has been in ketosis for six years; he explains how he stays so disciplined. When you love what you do, it’s easy to say disciplined. So, learn how to love keto foods and to do amazing things for your body. Tune in as we speak about Robert’s Keto Brick, how to break a plateau, and we talk about big tech censorship. / / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off [00:30] About Robert Orion Sikes * As a bodybuilder, Robert was shredded, but he sacrificed his health. * He developed eating disorders that left him in a dark place. * Plus, Robert fell into a deep debt; he got depressed and suicidal. * So, Robert tried keto. His cravings went away, and he felt much better. * Everyone at the gym would tell Robert that he couldn’t get big on carbs. However, Robert went fully keto, and he still competed as a bodybuilder. Robert has looked back since. [05:45] How Robert Will Stay Disciplined * The secret to Robert’s discipline is loving the process. * You can’t become a bodybuilder overnight; it takes years and years of weightlifting. * The more you work at something, the better you get. * Bodybuilding involves an obsessive amount of discipline. As long as you embrace it, then you will find success. [07:45] What To Know When Starting Keto * Know your “why” and understand what drives you. * Also, knowing your “why” will help if you have a long-term view of what you want to accomplish. That way, you’ll be excited about what you do every single day. * Getting healthy isn’t a good enough “why.” Instead, your “why” should be about the people in your life. You owe it to your family to stay healthy. [11:50] About The Keto Brick * The Keto Brick sold out in two minutes. * The bricks are great for backpacking, hunting, and running. The brick is 1,000 calories with 90 grams of fat. * Every ingredient has the purpose of optimizing your performance. * The momentum and support for Robert’s Keto Bricks keep coming. * Keto products should not have seed oils or any sweeteners. * If there are more protein and carbs than fat, then that isn’t keto. * Get Keto Bricks: https://www.ketobrick.com [19:15] Building Muscle On Keto * If you are implementing progressive overload and increasing your training, you will build muscle in the context of being in a caloric surplus. * Fuel your growth through adequate calories. * Within eight days, Robert will hit each muscle group twice. * Robert doesn’t do a ton of cardio. He likes to run as a meditative type of exercise. * If you’re doing cardio, do it after your strength training. Use it as a cool down rather than a warmup. [24:00] How To Break A Plateau * Many women chronically undereat. Their metabolic baseline has been so down-regulated that there’s not much room for them to improve. * So, women need to upregulate their metabolism. * Trying a calorie surplus will help upregulate your metabolism. * When you have a calorie surplus, that doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. * Having a cheat meal will have negative psychological effects. Instead, focus on desiring things that will improve your wellbeing. * Keto flexing will help your good cells get stronger. [33:20] About Big Tech Censorship * Robert is doubling-down on his own website. * He is revamping the entire website so big tech will not censor his macro content. * That way, he won’t have to rely on social platforms to be his end-all be-all.
