WEDNESDAY WISDOM: C-Mode
When you get an audition, don't immediately look at the breakdown (the description of the role). Instead, go straight to the script and follow your instincts on how to approach the character. Analyze why the character exists and why the scene is important. Once you have your own take, then look at the breakdown to see if there's anything you need to add. Don't try to give them what you think they want; be true to yourself and your instrument (your unique approach). Approach your audition with curiosity, confidence, calmness, and clarity (C-MODE). Don't just play at an emotion, be curious about why the character is feeling that way. Remember, there's no right or wrong point of view, but having a CLEAR point of view will make you stand out in the selection process. "Pending your interest" is the crucial phrase to remember when considering audition opportunities. Don't just jump at the chance without thinking if you're actually interested in the material, the role, and the people involved. Saying "I have an opportunity" instead of "I have an audition" can also help you approach the experience in a positive light. Remember, if you're not interested, it's okay to say NO. And in the current climate of the writer's strike, it's important to qualify your interest based on where you are in your career and whether you've worked with the casting director before. So, don't be desperate and grab at everything. Be intentional and make informed decisions.

Also known as Laban Movement Analysis, the aim of the study is to break down how movement can be expressed into it’s simplest forms, allowing a performer to call upon them and experiment in a thorough manner. The movement can be said to be drawn from physiological, emotional and psychological aspect as to how a person can move. The underlying theme is transparency and ease of access for the mannerisms an actor can make onstage but is also used across multiple disciplines for a variety of uses.

Terry Knickerbocker is founder and studio director of the Terry Knickerbocker Studio, the renowned New York City-based acting school. Today we’re sitting down with Oge Egbuonu. She’s a director, writer, producer—a storyteller. A voice that’s piercing the veil of what history has shown a Black woman’s experience in America to be.
Her directorial debut, (In)Visible Portraits, was just released on Juneteenth. It’s a Think Piece, a self-described “love letter to Black women, and a re-education to everyone else.” Oge shares how she found herself in the middle of creating this film, aware of its bigger purpose in being a vehicle for people to start questioning what they were taught to believe as true.

Actress, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur Caitlin Crosby knows a thing or two about inspiring others. She began writing songs with Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds in high school and subsequently signed to his label, Arista Records.
Growing up in Hollywood and working in the entertainment industry inspired Caitlin to launch the campaign LoveYourFlawz to support those dealing with body image issues, with the release of debut album “Flawz” in 2009 through Blackledge/Atlantic Records.
While on tour, Caitlin started The Giving Keys which employs those transitioning out of homelessness to make jewelry out of repurposed keys. Each key is engraved with a message like FEARLESS, HOPE, STRENGTH or COURAGE. Today I wanted to circle back to the great quote from Maz Jobrani's interview. The more specific you can be in your work the more relatable you will be. Curating a body of work or a character with a specific belief system in mind will garner you more reliability with an audience whether in an audition room or standing up on stage as a stand up comedian. Do not be afraid to lean into the voice that makes you special.
Also, during this special "shelter in place" time I wanted to entice a new way of thinking with "courting the unknown".

She shares what it was like growing up in institutionalized segregation and how, at 17 years old, her family left the country to move to New Zealand. REPLAY: Jason Momoa
Jason Momoa was the FIRST one to audition for GAME OF THRONES and the LAST one cast a year later. His cousins impact on his life helped him make a strong choice that ultimately landed him the role. But it took him a few years and a couple of classes to trust his instinctive strong choices and learn how to "audition". BAYWATCH discovered him in his native home of Hawaii among a 1300 person cattle call. Jason responded to a radio call announcing the audition that would pay him more than the daily rate of folding T-shirts at the family owned surf shop. Jason's unique look has always made him a different choice but also made opportunities few and far between.
