The US abdicated its place on the global throne after the Trump administration replaced the international order with transactional, bilateral relationships, largely leaving the US on the outside looking in. President Biden campaigned on a return to a multilateral foreign policy and rejoined many global initiatives on his first day in the Oval Office. Ivo Daalder, President of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and co-author of the gripping “The Empty Throne: America’s Abdication of Global Leadership,” joins Altamar to talk about America’s future and its place in the global arena. Daalder was formerly the U.S. ambassador to NATO, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and director for European affairs at the NSC under President Bill Clinton.
