The U.S. correctional system is responsible for having 10 times the number of mentally ill patients receiving treatment than any state psychiatric hospital. People with serious mental disorders are 4 times more likely to be incarcerated for minor charges, such as disorderly conduct. Inmates with schizophrenia also remain in prison longer than others. Host Rachel Star Withers and cohost Gabe Howard examine the effect prison has on people with schizophrenia and the connections between living with schizophrenia and incarceration. Guest Lloyd Hale joins us to discuss living with schizophrenia and his time in the correctional system after he was convicted of murder. Years later, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. About Our Guest Lloyd Hale is a father, certified peer specialist, and the founder of RIDE 4 S.P.M.I. (Ride 4 Serious and Persistent Mental Illness), a 210-mile bike ride across South Carolina to raise awareness around mental illness. As someone living well with schizophrenia, Lloyd has devoted his life to sharing his story in the hopes that others will seek treatment and receive the help and support they need. Lloyd has partnered with SC SHARE (South Carolina Self Help Association Regarding Emotions) to champion the READY FOR LIFE project and THE DREAM TEAM PROJECT, which aims to start healthy conversations in rural areas with youths and their families about mental health and resources in their community. Ep. 178: Ways to Break the Cycle of Perfectionism with Menije Boduryan
Welcome back to another episode of Your Anxiety Toolkit Podcast. Today we have on an amazing guest and therapist, Menije Boduryan. Menije is an OCD specialist as well as a specialist on perfectionism. She is here today to talk to us about perfectionism and to give us some tips on how to manage perfectionism in our own lives. Menije defines perfectionism as a drive to do things perfectly with anything less than 100% being unacceptable. It is a desire to want everything to be flawless and in that desire, comes a lot of expectations or rules that people set for themselves. She explains that perfectionism becomes a mindset and you begin to operate in the world expecting yourself to be perfect, as well as your partner, your best friend, your clothes, your work desk, what you eat, and how you exercise to all be perfect. It becomes powerful because our self-identity becomes so attached to this idea of being perfect. It is not just about the desire to do things perfectly, but it also becomes a belief that once you do things perfectly, then you are enough, you are worthy. Menije shares with us a bit about her own struggles with perfectionism and how perfectionism impacts our relationships. She describes how it is really possible to fall into a cycle with perfectionism. If you fall short in something you are doing, which you inevitably will, you start into the cycle of feeling shame and that you are not good enough so you then strive to work harder the next time to achieve that level of perfection. Menije shares with us one of the best ways to break out of that cycle of perfectionism is really to just give ourselves a tremendous amount of self-compassion. Recognizing that whatever happens today, I am worthy and I am enough. She also describes that breaking out of the cycle involves being able to tolerate your imperfections. Really being able to sit with the discomfort and anxiety that will come when you have done something that is not perfect. She describes it as very similar to exposure therapy. Dr. Rick Boone is the Warriors Heart Clinical Director a licensed Psychologist, who currently leads the clinical team at the first and ONLY private and accredited residential treatment center in the U.S. exclusively for "warriors", which includes active-duty military, veterans, first responders and EMTs/Paramedics. Tabs are one of those small things in our life that can have a fairly outsized impact. Don't think so? Well, keep listening to find out why. Today we're going to be talking about how tabs can literally change the way our brain works, some ways we can cull having all those tabs open, and then talk a bit about those precursors to tabs... bookmarks. As we switch from task to task to task we're actually decreasing our overall productivity, not increasing it. * Switching tabs can give a hit of dopamine, which only increases our desire to switch tabs more often. We can work on this by being mindful of what kind of tabs we leave open. * A great way to limit tabs is to use services like Pocket or Instapaper that allow us to save articles we want to read for later. By storing them in an external system we remove the temptation to just switch to those articles in the middle of other tasks. * Another alternative to just leaving tabs open is to use your bookmarks for sites that you either visit frequently or just sites that you know you're going to have to come back to eventually. What we don't want to do however is create bookmarks for sites that we just need to keep open temporarily.
