You want to keep yourself safe on the hiking trail, in addition to keeping the ones around you safe. UK HDI researchers study air travel accessibility for people who use wheelchairs
Two researchers at the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute (HDI) are working to better understand the challenges Kentuckians who use wheelchairs face in air travel; an especially timely topic during the upcoming summer traveling season. Walt Bower, Ph.D., preservice training coordinator, and Julie Pfeiffer, a Ph.D. student in the College of Education and a graduate research assistant at HDI, are laying the groundwork for further academic research on this issue. UK researcher champions cultural understanding in health care
One University of Kentucky researcher’s work is rooted in helping people understand how cultural values and health beliefs can play a role in various health disparities. Julie Plasencia, Ph.D., began her career studying Type 2 diabetes. Her research interests have expanded to diet-related health disparities in low-resource communities and how culture influences dietary behaviors in Latino communities. She talks about her research with Dr. Greg Davis.

Coming soon to a store shelf near you: lifesaving opioid reversal drug Naloxone approved for OTC
Chances are you or someone close to you has been directly impacted by the opioid epidemic, which continues to afflict Kentucky. In 2021, overdose deaths in Kentucky reached an all-time high of 2,250, with 90% involving an opioid. Because bystanders are present in more than a third of opioid overdoses, hundreds of these deaths could have been prevented with naloxone, a lifesaving medication that is accessible, safe and easy to administer. Trish Freeman, a professor in the UK College of Pharmacy, talks with Greg about this potentially game-changing development in the fight against opioid addiction and overdose deaths.

UK awarded NIH’s only SuRE Resource Center grant to lead national research diversity effort
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded the University of Kentucky a prestigious center grant to share its expertise and lead national efforts to build diverse academic research environments. This will be accomplished by the oversight of the new Support of Research Excellence (SuRE) R16 grant program designed to foster research capacity building at colleges and universities that serve underrepresented students. Dr. Greg talks with program co-director Brett Spear.

Doctor who treats transgender youths says new law will complicate care for patients
On the day lawmakers in Frankfort were busy overriding Governor Andy Beshear's veto of Senate Bill 150, WUKY medical reporter Dr. Greg Davis talked with a physician who will be directly affected by the new law. Dr. Keisa Fallin-Bennett is an associate professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the University of Kentucky. Fallin-Bennett also serves as the lead physician of the Transform Health initiative and its LGBTQT* clinic at UK.

Collaboration turns the tide on Kentucky’s colorectal cancer rates
Twenty years ago, Kentucky had the highest colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates in the U.S., as well as the second-lowest colorectal cancer screening rate. Experts from across the globe to present at ASN conference at UK
The annual American Society for Neurochemistry conference is a unique meeting that brings young and seasoned scientists together to experience cutting-edge neurochemistry and neurobiology. This year the conference will be held at the University of Kentucky from March 18-22 and we have a preview. Dr. Greg talks with Linda Van Eldik, director of UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. She's also the chair of the public forum which is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. on March 18th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Lexington. The forum will look at topics ranging from healthy brain aging to addressing risks and disparities in the community.

New Alzheimer's drug being tested at UK Sanders-Brown could be a gamechanger
The University of Kentucky is a site for the groundbreaking AHEAD study, the first-ever clinical trial to test the effect of a promising drug known as lecanemab. Just a few weeks ago the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Leqembi (lecanemab-irmb) via the Accelerated Approval pathway for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. This represents an important advancement in the ongoing fight to effectively treat Alzheimer’s disease, and UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is on the forefront of the work. Dr. Greg speaks with Greg Jicha, director of clinical trials at UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging.

Everything is Science city-wide festival returns with 'timely' theme
Each year, a group of students and employees at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and campus and community partners work together to show Lexington that science is all around us, not just in the research labs. Everything is Science is held at different locations throughout the city, with events happening Monday through Friday. The festival features presentations, demonstrations, and conversations in laid-back spaces, like local restaurants, pubs, and breweries. Speakers aim to bring an uncomplicated approach to topics that we may not initially consider science-related. Dr. Greg gets a preview from coordinating committee member Dr. Lou Hirsch.

K-VAC project to shed light on vaccine hesitancy in Eastern Kentucky

UK researchers to use app to track link between HIV, alcohol use
Researchers at the University of Kentucky are taking an innovative approach to help a high-risk population by using easily accessible technology: an app on a smartphone. Carolyn Lauckner, Ph.D., an assistant professor in behavioral sciences in the College of Medicine, is leading a study to better understand the link between HIV and alcohol use in young adult sexual minority men and transgender (SMMT) individuals aged 18-34, with the goal to reduce HIV risk behaviors. Bingocize program could be helpful tool for healthy aging
Could the game of bingo — with a twist — be part of healthier aging? A $1.1 million grant will help University of Kentucky College of Education researchers measure the impacts of increased exercise and social interaction for nursing home residents through a program called Bingocize®. QPR program equips people to help when confronted by mental health emergencies
What do you do when you witness someone struggling with suicidal thoughts or when someone tells you they intend to harm themselves? The University of Kentucky offers an online program called QPR to equip you with the right answers and actions. Think of it as a CPR program for mental health crises. Dr. Greg talks with Marc Woods, Chief Nursing Officer for Behavioral Medicine at UK HealthCare and Eastern State Hospital about QPR, which stands for Question, Persuade and Refer.
