Sheep and Goats – Matthew 25:31-46
Play • 17 min

Today, we answer a reader question from Tumblr who is trying to find peace with being gay. This reader is asking for us to prove that being gay is not a sin after reading an article from AnswersinGenesis that refutes everything that gay Christians have said. “I’m a same-sex attracted Christian who has felt suicidal about it forever. I wish I could find absolute truth about it and be at peace.”

As for queering the text this week, we are trying something new by reading a selection from Queers the Word. It fits perfectly with today’s text from Matthew 25:31-46. Tune in for a sampler of our 40-day devotional Queers the Word and a queer look at the way God will separate “the sheep” from “the goats.”

Key takeaways:

  • Election and holiday updates [0:40]
  • Fr. Shay’s big news (career-wise) [3:21]
  • Reader question from Tumblr on proving that gay is not a sin [5:13]
  • One of the biggest tip we can give [6:13]
  • Jesus tells us what to believe in [9:18]
  • Reading from Queers the Word [11:09]
  • LGBTQ+ folks are usually cast as wicked [13:17]
  • How Jesus and his followers did the work? [15:10]
  • More about Queers the Word [15:49]

Matthew 25:31-46

“Now when the Human One comes in his majesty and all his angels are with him, he will sit on his majestic throne. All the nations will be gathered in front of him. He will separate them from each other, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right side. But the goats he will put on his left.

“Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who will receive good things from my Father. Inherit the kingdom that was prepared for you before the world began. I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me.’

“Then those who are righteous will reply to him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you as a stranger and welcome you, or naked and give you clothes to wear? When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

“Then the king will reply to them, ‘I assure you that when you have done it for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you have done it for me.’

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Get away from me, you who will receive terrible things. Go into the unending fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels. I was hungry and you didn’t give me food to eat. I was thirsty and you didn’t give me anything to drink. I was a stranger and you didn’t welcome me. I was naked and you didn’t give me clothes to wear. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

“Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and didn’t do anything to help you?’ Then he will answer, ‘I assure you that when you haven’t done it for one of the least of these, you haven’t done it for me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment. But the righteous ones will go into eternal life.”

275 - God [Can’t or Won’t] Stop the Little Girl From Being Raped
Does God need our prayers to help Him stop evil?   If He can defeat evil without us, why doesn't he?  Today's guests appear to have some concrete direction on making sense of the "problem of evil." But they go in two different directions.  Oord proposes that God simply lacks the power to stop bad things from happening and needs our partnership to minimize the effects of evil.  Chip believes that an all-powerful God has willfully given humanity dominion over this world and suggests that people possess a God-given duty of using the "weapon of prayer" to unleash God's power in order to stop evil.  So, is God innately limited?  Or is He self-limited?   Both outlooks are a bit unnerving.  Maybe, let's just stick with good old-fashion mystery. Thomas Oord appeared on episode 209 to discuss his book on Open Theology, "God Can't."  Unique and intriguing territory is covered in this follow-up conversation, discussing his follow-up book, "Questions and Answers for God Can't." Podcast 52 – Meghan and Harry proven right to have concerns about Social Media.
Last year Meghan and Harry hosted an edition of the TIME100 Talks Series. During their talk Meghan, Harry and several of their guests discussed how harms on social media don’t just live on the platforms, but often extend to shaping behaviours that people then act upon.  This theory has been proven to be correct. We all witnessed on TV this week in Washington the harm that is caused by propaganda messaging posted on social media. One of Meghan and Harry’s guests on their TIME 100 show was Tristan Harris co-founder of the Centre for Humane Technology. This is one of the groups Meghan and Harry have since chosen to work with under their Archewell Foundation.  Following the social unrest that took place at Capitol Hill, Tristan released a press statement saying that the events this week that the whole world witnessed, were the consequences of a broken, yet highly profitable business model, that rewards self-reinforcing cycles of outrage, rumours, and political and racial division.  His organization the Centre for Humane Technology,  https://www.humanetech.com/ is trying to make social media platforms more accountable for the negative effects that they cause in society, be it social unrest, or teenagers feeling increasingly suicidal or depressed due to their social media use.  I took some time this week to watch Tristan's documentary The Social Dilemma. It raises many interesting and somewhat scary points about how much we are manipulated and basically used by social media platforms. In the documentary many techies who used to work for the big tech companies describe exactly how what we view on social media has been manipulated. Many of the people in the film were the techies behind the software used to do so. Interestingly many of them don’t want their kids anywhere near social media. *At the time of their TIME 100 talk Meghan and Harry were derided in the media for calling out social media's "global crisis of hate". Maybe Meghan and Harry can be excused for a little “we told you so” given the tragic events this past week.* Check out my blog at www.kindthoughtsformeghanmarkle.com

109: God is Grey w/ Brenda Marie Davies
All month in January, we’re talking about purity culture. I want to hold various discussions on sex to ramp up the Parenting After Purity Culture conference happening in February. Today, I’m so excited to be talking to Brena Marie Davies about the topic. Brenda is the founder of the popular YouTube channel, God Is Grey, as well as the author of On Her Knees: Memoir of a Prayerful Jezebel. Brenda’s book tells the story of her years growing up as a conservative Christian. Of course, with that upbringing came purity culture. In this episode, Brenda shares some of that story. She had done the amazing work of redeeming some of the toxicity from that purity culture upbringing and now helps others understand God. Tune in to hear all about her faith history, how she’s shifted in her faith, and detoxing from purity culture. Show Highlights: * Brenda’s deconstruction journey. * How her view of God has changed and how that parallels her detox from purity culture. * How purity culture affects our health and wellbeing in every way. * Why the idea of our sexuality needs to be expanded. * Allowing ourselves to experience pleasure and increase our sensualities. * How purity culture still affects Brenda and how she overcomes those narratives that still creep up on her. * How to teach our kids to know how to check in with their bodies. * The danger of the purity culture stigma. * How to talk about sex out of love and a desire for health instead of out of fear. Last Call At Night Cheers
Wahhhh but also ACK! We are leaving you with some wonderful night calls from our wonderful listeners. But of course there is also a call about how The Big Chill and Cathy comics are connected, some rhapsodizing about monoliths (new and old), and a decision on what show is better: Frasier or Cheers. Some sentimental night calls to send us out, our favorite episodes and guests, reminiscing about Girls In Hoodies, and where we’d send our listeners to help fill the void. We promise we’ll be back someday on some astral plane. So long for now.
