Episode 17: Caring for Baby Teeth

Between us, (Pinky and Caroline) we have navigated through 10 sets of baby teeth!

Dr Caroline Howarth is a Mum of five and a Paediatric Dentist, she fielded a mouthful of questions from Pinky’s Facebook page – everything from wee hours feeds and tooth decay to flossing and frenulums. It’s fascinating to hear the critical role that saliva plays in dental health.

Although ‘teething’ can sometimes be a general explanation for baby’s discomfort and sleeping issues, Caroline warns that rosey cheeks, prolonged discomfort and elevated temperature are more likely to be symptoms of other health conditions.

More about our guest Caroline Howarth:

Dr Caroline Howarth is English, she moved to Oz with her husband in her 20’s, she’s a paediatric dentist and a mum of five, 4 girls and a boy.

Caroline did her undergraduate dental degree in the UK then worked briefly as a general dentist before returning to uni to complete a master of medical science in oral surgery . In Australia she worked as a general dentist whilst completing parts 1 and 2 of the Dental Fellowship and membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, England

Caroline-started a 3 year Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry in Paediatric Dentistry at Melbourne Uni in 2000. It took Caroline 5 years to complete this as she had 2 kids along the way and was pregnant with the 3rd by the time she finally finished!

Caroline currently works in private dental practice as a specialist paediatric dentist.

As is the Australian way, Caroline and her husband took the kids out of school and went camping for 7 months. Her oldest is now 19, youngest is 11 which gives Caroline time to try a few things for herself – at the moment that’s CrossFit and painting …And, in an effort to prompt her brain she’s mid-way through doing a Grad Cert in Nutrition at Deakin Uni (for fun!)
