SOCCERHEADS: Goalkeepers Rule! (Episode 9)
Play • 48 min
Hosted by three professional comedians including two diehard soccer fans, Soccerheads New England is a weekly podcast that covers soccer at all levels. Each week, Paul Nardizzi, Jim Ruberti and Dave Rattigan seek out and discuss the best stories and hot issues in the world of soccer, with particular emphasis on World Soccer, Major League Soccer (and The New England Revolution), and college soccer.

Paul Nardizzi is a comedian with appearances on Conan O'Brien, Comedy Central, and Fox Sports' Best Damn Sports Show Period, as well as regional appearances on NESN. He’s also a former college player at Bentley who has coached at multiple levels, from youth to college. In addition, he trained his four sons, three of whom opted to play college soccer and one of whom is playing professionally.

Cape Cod native Jim Ruberti is a popular comedian around New England and host of “Jim Ruberti & Friends” shows at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. He’s also a former goalkeeper and captain for UMass Boston, but his playing career ended after a concussion in his senior year. He’s gone on to coach and officiate youth league games and his sons went on to play high school soccer. Like Nardizzi, he wakes up at peculiar hours to watch futbol games from Europe.

Dave Rattigan’s CD was played on Sirius Satellite Radio, he’s performed on the syndicated Steve Katsos Show, acted in television commercials, and done stand-up comedy in theaters all over New England. He was a terrible backup goalkeeper for one season in high school, and later became an award-winning sportswriter whose work appeared in Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News and the Boston Globe. His real indoctrination into the world of soccer came when he lived with a soccerhead buddy who tried to make him a fan by scolding and berating him for not loving the sport, “enjoyed by millions around the world.”

In this weeks episode, Paul and Dave will welcome back Jim from his unexcused absence. The importance of the goalkeeper will be hotly debated and Jim will give tips on how to become a good second string keeper. Dave struggles with the proper pronunciation of Xavi who just may be the next great player coach for Barcelona. The guys will discuss why the MLS playoffs don't start until nearly two weeks after the season has ended. And finally, the high school tournament starts this week here in Massachusetts. What can it mean to a player's college aspirations, and what makes some schools contenders year after year after year?
