EP60: Brittany Killgore's BDSM Nightmare
Brittany Killgore was a beautiful 22-year-old woman married to Marine Cory Killgore. Originally from Pennsylvania, she moved to Fallbrook, California, near the Camp Pendleton base. While there, Cory got sent to Afghanistan and their marriage fell apart. In 2012, she filed for divorce and started packing to move back east. Before she left, she really wanted to go on a dinner cruise called the Hornblower that her best friend Liz told her about. Brittany Killgore knew Louis Perez, his girlfriend Dorothy Maraglino and her best friend Jessica Lopez, through Liz. Louis, Dorothy and Jessica were into the BDSM lifestyle. Together, they shared a dark fantasy of kidnap, rape, torture and murder. On April 14, 2012, they decided to act out this fantasy. They tricked Brittany into believing she was going on the dinner cruise with Louis, but it didn't take long for Brittany to realize something was very wrong. Ten minutes after being picked up by Louis to go on the dinner cruise, she texted a friend "Help." That was the last anyone ever heard from her. The Resurrection of Loserus: Canoe Man John Darwin
In every human civilization I can think of, we’ve had—y’know—rules. Granted, some of them have been silly, or downright wrong, and should have been scrapped. But by and large, rules help keep the weave nice and tight on the fabric of society. Without them, well, you’ve basically got The Purge. Nobody wants that, if for no other reason than all those masks would be creepy. Most people have no problem following most of the rules, but once in a while you get a person who thinks he’s above them. Whether because of arrogance, desperation, inspiration, boredom, or some combination of them all, these folks decide they don’t have to stick to the plan. The sky’s the limit for them, because they are such special little shooting stars. Sometimes that works out okay—we get our rebels with a cause, leaders who change our way of thinking, being, or governing. But just as often, we get a rebel without a clue, instead. If we’re unlucky enough, that can end in tragedy. If we’re lucky, we just get a good laugh, and a wild story like this one. The Attempted Murder & Disappearance of Martha Martinez Maxwell
In April of 1987, authorities in Carter County, Oklahoma found a Watauga, Texas woman on the side of the highway barely clinging to life. She was bound with duct tape, severely beaten, and covered in the blood that had poured from the slit in her throat. The woman was Martha Martinez Maxwell. After doctors at Dallas’s Parkland Hospital saved her life, she dropped charges on the man who’d left her for dead 100 miles from home – her husband, Jeffrey Allan Maxwell. The man, too, manipulated Martha into reconciling with him. Five years later, Martha went missing under suspicious circumstances. And Jeffrey Allan Maxwell’s further crimes, at least some of them, landed him in prison for life 20 years later. The man is suspected, too, in other unsolved Texas disappearances and homicides. After being stopped by a trooper at 9pm on the 13th, Patrick mysteriously vanished. He had planned to stop off in Elko that night, a town just fifty miles away. Whether or not he ever made it to Elko is unknown, but just nine hours later his car was found abandoned more than one hundred and fifty miles away. Initially it was believed Patrick may have gotten lost and wandered into the darkness of the desert but when investigators realized his car had been found in the same location as that of a woman who went missing five years earlier foul play quickly came into view. Was Patrick Carnes the victim of a random crime or could his disappearance be linked to another unsolved case? Billionaire's Barry & Honey Sherman? Part 2 w/ Nic
Thank you to Nic from the True Crime Garage podcast for joining me to discuss this wild case. Honey & Barry Sherman were murdered on December 13, 2017. They were discovered hung by leather belts in the pool area. The Sherman's weren't just a well-off family, they were one Canada's richest couples. Barry was the owner and founder of Apotex, Canada's largest generic drug maker. Police initially believed this was a murder-suicide but after pushback from the family they changed their tune to a targeted homicide.
