THE KILLER'S SHADOW-John Douglas and Mark Olshaker
Play • 1 hr 31 min
The legendary FBI criminal profiler and international bestselling author of Mindhunter and The Killer Across the Table returns with this timely, relevant book that goes to the heart of extremism and domestic terrorism, examining in-depth his chilling pursuit of, and eventual prison confrontation with Joseph Paul Franklin, a White Nationalist serial killer and one of the most disturbing psychopaths he has ever encountered.

Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready.
The October 8, 1977 shooting was a forerunner to the tragedies and divisiveness that plague us today. John Douglas, the FBI’s pioneering, first full-time criminal profiler, hunted the shooter―a white supremacist named Joseph Paul Franklin, whose Nazi-inspired beliefs propelled a three-year reign of terror across the United States, targeting African Americans, Jews, and interracial couples. In addition, Franklin bombed the home of Jewish leader Morris Amitay, shot and paralyzed Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, and seriously wounded civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. The fugitive supported his murderous spree robbing banks in five states, from Georgia to Ohio.

Douglas and his writing partner Mark Olshaker return to this disturbing case that reached the highest levels of the Bureau, which was fearful Franklin would become a presidential assassin―and haunted him for years to come as the threat of copycat domestic terrorist killers increasingly became a reality. Detailing the dogged pursuit of Franklin that employed profiling, psychology and meticulous detective work, Douglas and Olshaker relate how the case was a make-or-break test for the still-experimental behavioral science unit and revealed a new type of, determined, mission-driven serial killer whose only motivation was hate.

A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign. Armada is a quaint and quiet village in Macomb County, Michigan, with less than two thousand residents. It’s most known for its country fair as well as the Halloween festival aptly named Armada-Geddon. In 2019, it was named the nicest place to live in Michigan. It’s the kind of area where people typically leave their doors unlocked and murder is something you hear about in the newspapers for big cities. But then one warm summer night, a tragedy took place along a picturesque recreational trail which would cause irreversible damage to the community. In the aftermath, the community bounded together to ensure that justice would be served. SPONSORS - YARN: Thank you to YARN for sponsoring this episode! 145 - The Disappearance of Robin Trivisonno
***Sponsored by: BetterHelp. Visit to save 10% today! BestFiends! Download today on the Apple App Store or Google Play!*** In the early morning hours of Monday, January 20th, 1997, twenty-eight year old Robin Trivisonno was looking for a ride. Asking around to friends in the bar she previously worked at, no one was able to help. Then a mysterious man approached and the two walked out together. Neither has ever been seen again. Investigators faced a tough case; few clues, no major leads and their main person of interest was unidentified. While witnesses were able to give extremely detailed descriptions, no one knew his name, where he was from or what he was driving. The case went cold almost immediately. After four long months, several pieces of evidence were found in an unexpected place leading investigators to wonder if they had been there all along or if Robin's abductor might have planted them. Twenty-four years later, family and investigators are still hoping to find the truth and discover what happened to the twenty-eight year old mother of three. FB: IG: TW: Visit for more information. The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders (Part Five)
Between 1972 and 1973, at least seven women were murdered in California's Sonoma County. The discovery of three bodies in July of 1979 - after years of inactivity in this case - would bring about a new wave of speculation in the press. Despite investigators hoping that these discoveries could help provide answers for the numerous unsolved cases, all they did was end up creating even more questions. In the decades since, investigators have pondered whether this case could be connected to some of the most infamous names in all of true crime, Ted Bundy and the Zodiac among them. But nearly half-a-century later, all of these murders remain unsolved...
