KILLER CULTS-Joyce and Stephen Singular
Play episode · 1 hr 3 min
What's scarier than a murderer? Someone with the charisma to compel others to kill for them . . . or to kill themselves. Meet these cult leaders--and get an inside look at their beliefs and how they controlled others.

Some cults, led by leaders like Charlie Manson, Jim Jones, and David Koresh, are notorious. But others are less well known, such as Shoko Asahara and his doomsday cult, Aum Shinrikyo, who orchestrated the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. Or Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, who founded the Order of the Solar Temple, a doomsday cult that led to the death of 51 members by murder or suicide. Then there is Marshall Applewhite, leader of Heaven's Gate, who, along with 38 followers, killed themselves in the belief that the Hale-Bopp comet signaled the arrival of a spaceship that would transport them to a higher plane of existence. What makes cult leaders so compelling is their often-unfathomable power over their adherents. Why do people kill others or themselves for a questionable set of beliefs? Killer Cults tells the stories behind both famous and unfamiliar cults, and the people behind them. Across a series of profiles, we learn the jaw-dropping truth behind some of the most mystifying and deadly cults, and their leaders, all of whom led their followers down a dark, murderous path. KILLER CULTS: Stories of Charisma, Deceit, and Death-Joyce and Stephen Singular.

Halloween Special: Scare You Round the Campfire, with Scare You to Sleep Host Shelby Scott
Hey, guess what? BOO! Haha, gotcha. Welcome to our second annual True Crime Campfire Halloween Special! As if 2020 hasn’t been scary enough by itself, right? We’re especially excited about this year’s Halloween episode, campers, because we have a very special guest joining us: The gorgeous and talented Shelby Scott, honey-voiced host of Scare You to Sleep, a podcast that, while beautifully produced and vastly entertaining, miiiight just make you wet yourself a little now and then. So just…y’know, be aware. Shelby’s stock and trade is fictional horror, but she’s also a true crime buff. So we decided that for this episode, we’d each pick a case. And for some reason we all ended up picking vintage ones, which I think adds to the spookiness. So grab your big bowl of Halloween candy, dim your lights, and enjoy three bizarre stories of murder and mayhem. Would You Buy Chris Watts' Penis?
Foot scrapings. Nail clippings. Used panties. Snotty Kleenex. Gravesite soil. Letters and artwork make up most of the items you will find on murderabilia sites but there have been some true oddities. There’s been a used Kleenex that belonged to Charles Manson. The Santa Claus suit worn by John Edward Robinson, and the flaked-off foot skin of “The Railway Killer.” On the website of Serial Killer Ink, you can buy the full, 16-minute-long video of the New Zealand Christchurch Mosque shooting....the one the killer himself streamed live to Facebook. It’s nestled in between letters, mail correspondence, artwork and mug shots from a variety of categorized killers. You can search by cannibals, necrophiliacs, school shooters, mass shooters and more. You can download the full psychological exams of Dahmer, Gacy and Bundy and others. So, what would happen, if tomorrow, Chris Watts’ penis outline ended up on the site for $100? Would you buy it? Would you find it funny, entertaining, or historical? Would one of your friends buy it? How would you feel about it if they did? ------------------------------------ The first episode of our Lori Vallow for Dummies will drop later this week, and our CULTS series will return next week with a new group to cover! ------------------------------------ Website: http://www.wesawthedevil.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevil Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcast Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevil --------------------------------------------- We would like to thank our Executive Producers: Maureen M Tamara R Emalie S Michele K Ylana Dawn M Faye S Christy K Ashley B Ashley M LeeAnn M Cristi R Shawna S Iris-Dora S Ian M Elizabeth B Michelle P Christina S Amy S ...as well as all of our other Patrons! Berkeley, California, is situated on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay. It’s a picturesque college town, known today for being the most liberal city in the U.S. A decade after the events to be recounted here, Berkeley was the epicenter of the counterculture movement, home to hippies and anarchists who flocked to the Bay Area from around the world. But before free love and bell bottoms gave this California city an identity that lasts even still, it was just another place in the U.S — where families raised children and worked toward the American dream. Even then, it was a beautiful city; its air fragrant with wild poppy and eucalyptus ... yet the dream for some here would melt into wickedness. Even the best home, the best grades, the best life couldn’t save at least one little girl... from something... so big… so bad… a girl who wanted a pet parakeet... and carried a picture of her poodle Hoagy next to photos of her classmate... in her little... red... wallet. ---- *From the archives of* The San Francisco Examiner, Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle,  San Mateo Times, Roseville Press-Times, Associated Press, Reuters, Santa Rosa Press Democrat, New York Daily News, United Press International, *Book:* Shallow Grave in Trinity County by Harry Farrell. ~ *Researched and Written by F.T Norton* *Hosted and Co-Written by Jack Luna* *Produced by The Operator* See acast.com/privacy ( https://acast.com/privacy ) for privacy and opt-out information. Short Stories #2 (Tony Harrelson & Robert Pillsen-Rahier)
This episode contains two separate, unrelated stories that haven't been reported on much in the past. In October of 2009, 46-year-old Tony Harrelson was shot and killed in Camp Hill, Alabama. A truck driver for the U.S. Postal Service, Tony is believed to have fallen prey to a gunman who had been robbing postal workers throughout eastern Alabama between 2008 and 2009. In July of 1990, 15-year-old Robert Pillsen-Rahier would disappear while spending time at the Cheyenne Mesa Adolescent Treatment Facility in Colorado Springs. While investigators never found any evidence of foul-play, Robert's mother continues to believe that employees of the facility know more than they ever told police.
