Alabama mom gets jail for killing accused rapist; confined kid burns bed to escape room
54 min

An Alabama woman who pleaded guilty to murdering her accused rapist was sentenced to 20 years after her Stand Your Ground self-defense appeal was denied. Brittany Smith had more than 30 injuries on her body, and her alleged assailant had “very high amounts of methamphetamine in his system” when he died. Plus, two Florida parents are charged after a child set fire to a mattress to escape “deplorable” conditions in a bedroom of their house. Criminal defense attorney Alison Triessl co-hosts.

The Mineral Murders // 95
*In 1985, two couples were murdered while out on different trips in a Mineral, Washington forest. Between a suspicious note found and a very specific M.O, police feared they had a serial killer on their hands- and that these murders could also be linked to another couple’s killings months prior. These are The Mineral Murders, also known as the Tube Sock Killings.* *BONUS EPISODES* www.patreon.com/goingwestpodcast *SPONSORS* *MAGIC SPOON CEREAL* https://magicspoon.com (use code GOINGWEST for free shipping!) *SWANSON VITAMINS* https://swanson.com (use code GOWEST for 20% off & free shipping on orders $50+) *CASE SOURCES* https://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/Suspected-or-convicted-serial-killers-in-1107863.php https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/skull-discovery-revives-washington-murder-mystery/ https://ididitforjodie.com/2012/03/29/wither-the-tube-sock-killer-a-tale-of-murder-and-mystery-in-the-pacific-northwest/ https://sites.psu.edu/gillianpassionblog/2020/10/09/washington-tube-sock-killings/ https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Stephen_Harkins_and_Ruth_Cooper https://unsolved.com/gallery/diana-robertson/ https://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/bhraei/the_tube_sock_murderswashington_state_unsolved/ https://truecrimearticles.com/2018/01/23/the-unsolved-case-of-the-1985-tube-sock-killings/ https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/137597165/_ https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/137475894/kimberly-dianne-lavine Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

True Murder: The Most Shocking Killers
True Murder: The Most Shocking Killers
Dan Zupansky -
THE KILLER'S SHADOW-John Douglas and Mark Olshaker
The legendary FBI criminal profiler and international bestselling author of Mindhunter and The Killer Across the Table returns with this timely, relevant book that goes to the heart of extremism and domestic terrorism, examining in-depth his chilling pursuit of, and eventual prison confrontation with Joseph Paul Franklin, a White Nationalist serial killer and one of the most disturbing psychopaths he has ever encountered. Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready. The October 8, 1977 shooting was a forerunner to the tragedies and divisiveness that plague us today. John Douglas, the FBI’s pioneering, first full-time criminal profiler, hunted the shooter―a white supremacist named Joseph Paul Franklin, whose Nazi-inspired beliefs propelled a three-year reign of terror across the United States, targeting African Americans, Jews, and interracial couples. In addition, Franklin bombed the home of Jewish leader Morris Amitay, shot and paralyzed Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, and seriously wounded civil rights leader Vernon Jordan. The fugitive supported his murderous spree robbing banks in five states, from Georgia to Ohio. Douglas and his writing partner Mark Olshaker return to this disturbing case that reached the highest levels of the Bureau, which was fearful Franklin would become a presidential assassin―and haunted him for years to come as the threat of copycat domestic terrorist killers increasingly became a reality. Detailing the dogged pursuit of Franklin that employed profiling, psychology and meticulous detective work, Douglas and Olshaker relate how the case was a make-or-break test for the still-experimental behavioral science unit and revealed a new type of, determined, mission-driven serial killer whose only motivation was hate. A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign. “Tricia Todd, Faith & Forgiveness” | MURDERISH Ep. 070
In April of 2016, Air Force veteran and hospice nurse Tricia Todd mysteriously vanished from a tranquil beachside town. The 33-year-old mother of one was vivacious, compassionate, and well-liked in her community. No one could ever imagine she would abandon her young daughter, and the notion of someone wanting to harm her was equally unfathomable. Years of secrecy obscured a daunting truth, one that wouldn’t be fully unveiled until it was much too late. Check us out: Visit Murderish.com for more info about the show and Creator/Host, Jami. 137 - The Murder of Anita Knutson
***Sponsored by: Orgain - visit tryorgain.com/trace for 20% off your first order*** Eighteen year old Anita Knutson had just completed her freshman semester at Minot State University in North Dakota. Living in an apartment with a roommate, Anita was working two jobs and excited about summer break. However, over the first weekend in June of 2007, Anita's family couldn't get in touch with her which was extremely out of character. After several attempts, Anita's father Gordon made the one hour drive to check on her. There he would make a horrifying discovery. Anita had been murdered, that much was clear, but who could have been responsible was a far more complex question involving a sorted cast of characters from a guy with an unrequited crush, a contentious roommate, the maintenance man, a group of construction workers and others. Despite being in possession of both DNA and fingerprints, police have yet to name an official suspect and while the case grows cold, a grieving family and frustrated community have begun to wonder if justice will ever be served.
