J. Douglas Holladay | Stop Following Your Passion & 4 Essential Steps to Success
1 hr 1 min

In today’s episode, we rethink the definition of success with J Douglas Holladay. Doug is the founder and CEO of Path North, a Georgetown University professor, former White House advisor, and the author of Rethinking Success: Eight Essential Practices for Finding Meaning in Work and Life.

In an age when more and more people are finding themselves trapped by the idea of a nonstop pursuit of material wealth, it’s time to take a moment and redefine what success should mean before we run ourselves into the ground, so what should success look like and what can we do to find long-lasting success that genuinely makes us better people?

What to Listen For

  • What’s wrong with the current definition of success and why do we need to rethink it before we run ourselves into the ground?
  • What is the difference between happiness and meaning, and how do you differentiate between the two so you are not chasing fleeting moments and rewards?
  • Why is it more important to be comfortable sharing your weaknesses and failures instead of your strengths and successes?
  • What role does forgiveness play in our ability to build and maintain relationships, and why can a lack of forgiveness be our downfall?
  • How do we escape the trap of becoming our parents so we can take their best traits and ditch the worst traits?
  • What can you do to find your own narrative while pushing back on everyone around you with their own narrative for who you are and who they expect you to be?
  • What questions can you ask yourself to make sure you are living your story instead of the story everyone else wants you to live?
  • What exercise can you do to integrate what you need to do and what you love to do?

Many of us define success through a lens we develop over years of experience and exposure to the world around us. Unfortunately for many, this has turned into an endless pursuit of more stuff to fill the void inside us created by the same society dangling the trappings of wealth in front of us no matter where we go in the modern world.

It’s time to redefine what success means so we can get out from under the obscene expectations set by society and start living a fulfilled life resulting from living a life inline with our values and not things.

In order to grow, you need failure. Understand and accept failure as a part of life. We often experience that learning is more effective in failure than in success because failure teaches us what works and what does not. When we embrace our strengths or limitations – we become better. People are often so afraid they’ll fail at something that they don’t try. Don’t be one of those people. Everyone has failed at something in his or her life, but not everyone tries again and again. World hard every day to reach your goals and you will. Keep going and you will find success. Subscribe! How to Trade Expectations for Appreciation | A Fireside Chat with Tony and Sage Robbins (Part 2)
Tony and Sage sit down for an intimate fireside chat to unpack the stress many of us feel around the holidays. We all have rules and beliefs about how things are supposed to be or how people are supposed to be. And when they do not meet our expectations, we suffer. The holidays can hold a magnifying glass over these expectations, whether that be family dynamics, budgets, or how well the turkey turned out. Listen as Tony and Sage suggest a new approach: To replace expectation with appreciation, to lead with gratitude and thanksgiving instead of worry, fear or anger. Sage eloquently calls us to take pause on the list-making and to-do’s associated with getting ready for the holidays. And Tony provides us with an invaluable tool for how to get more joy out of each individual moment and experience. It’s time to make a decision about what kind of holiday you want to have, to bring a new level of enjoyment for yourself and to be a blessing to those you love most. “What’s wrong is always available, so is what’s right.” - Tony Robbins About The Fireside Chat Series: In the 1930s and 40s, a time when the country was struggling even more than it is today, we had an amazing leader named FDR. He began doing evening radio programs called “fireside chats,” designed to communicate directly with the American people. At that time, 90% of people in the U.S at that time had a radio. Today, 96% of people have a cell phone and nearly all have internet access. Instead of being unified and watching all the same things, and having a collective experience, now we're all kind of separated. And we can see division in our culture. We desperately need a form of unity, a form of connection, more humanity and more kindness in the world. Tony and Sage thought to bring back this time-honored tradition of a fireside chat as a means of unity and compassion. We’re entering the winter season, drawing inward into our homes and into ourselves, reflecting on the hardships and blessings alike this unique year has brought. In this three-part series, you will hear them dispel their hopes and dreams for you this holiday season, as well as share some of Tony’s powerful tools and strategies to not only survive the coming months, but to step up and thrive.

352: It's Time To Create Your 10 Year Vision
Do you have a clear vision for what the next 10 years of your life will be like? If not, would you like my help creating one? If you have one, do you think it would be beneficial to revisit it? Last week, I came across a journal entry I wrote back in 2016. It was titled “The Miracle Morning Movement 10 Year Vision.” When I reread it, I was inspired by some of the possibilities, amazed to realize how much of it had already come true, and reminded that we can all benefit from creating and maintaining a 10-year vision that drives our behavior each day. I want you to be able to look back on this moment and say to yourself, “I did it. I got clear on the life I was committed to creating, what I needed to do, who I needed to become to create the most fulfilling life I could imagine, and I made it happen.” Today, Shawn joins me to talk about the astounding problems with our healthcare system, the importance of diet and exercise in illness prevention, and the major cultural changes that need to happen to help us become a healthier society. KEY TAKEAWAYS * First, you’re going to hear a detailed example of a 10-year vision to show you what it looks like when things come to fruition. * Then we’re going to explore why creating a 10-year vision is worth your time. * Finally, you’re going to learn a step-by-step process you can use to create a 10-year vision of your own.
