Local Politics with Nithya Raman, Confronting Grief and Examining Our Values
Play episode · 1 hr 5 min

This week, Gaby and Allison help a listener who wants to speak more openly to her family about grief following her mother’s passing. They then speak to community advocate and city council candidate Nithya Raman about running for office as a woman of color, defunding the police and why it’s so important to care about local politics. And finally, a look at our values. Is it possible for them to align with our daily life? What are our values? (Mostly dogs.) (JK.)

Why Are Domestic Workers’ Rights Essential? with Alicia Garza
There are more than 2.5 million care workers, nannies, and house cleaners across the United States. They are skilled professionals. Their labor is essential. So are their rights.   Alicia Garza, who is the Director of Strategy & Partnerships for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, joins Jonathan to discuss the history of domestic work in the United States, why domestic workers are some of the least protected, most vulnerable individuals—without access to health care, paid sick days, or a living wage—and what a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights could offer these workers in the way of proper compensation, labor protections, and dignity.   Beyond her work with the NDWA, Alicia Garza is the co-creator of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, the principal at the Black Futures Lab, a writer, and a podcast host. Her new book The Purpose of Power: How We Come Together When We Fall Apart is out now.   Once you’ve had a chance to listen to this episode of Getting Curious, make sure to check out Alicia’s first appearance on the show, and her podcasts Lady Don’t Take No and Sunstorm.   Follow Alicia on Twitter @aliciagarza and Instagram @chasinggarza.    Find out what today’s guest and former guests are up to by following us on Instagram and Twitter @CuriousWithJVN.    Check out all new Getting Curious merch at PodSwag.com.   Listen to more music from Quiñ by heading over to TheQuinCat.com. No trick and all treat, author emily m. danforth (Plain Bad Heroines, The Miseducation of Cameron Post) joins us this week to dyke out about all things sapphic and spooky. Phoebe, Ijeoma Olou, & Phil Robinson Are Doing Their Best
It's crunch time, boos! The 2020 election is coming up. Many of us are scared and stressed and I called on two of the smartest people I know to talk about the issues of the day. Yep, that's right! We have another super sized episode of Black Frasier! So make some popcorn and Lipton iced tea and dig in. First up! Phil and Phoebe break down what exactly he does as a local politician, his career in the non-profit space and, of course, they give each other a hard time because that's what siblings do. Next, Phoebe chats with Ijeoma about local politics in Seattle, defunding the police, and as per usual, she gives us some tools on how to show up more intentionally in our communities. Plus, both Phil and Ijeoma answer some top notch listener questions.  Ijeoma Oluo Details: Twitter/Instagram: @IjeomaOluo Preorder Ijeoma's upcoming book MEDIOCRE: THE DANGEROUS LEGACY OF WHITE MEN : https://bit.ly/3dDteAg State Rep Phil Robinson's Details: Instagram/Twitter: @robinsonforoh Website: https://bit.ly/3ofjdhJ   -- Black Owned Business: Melanin Haircare WEBSITE : https://bit.ly/2IMG9ob INSTAGRAM: https://bit.ly/2IGiBRD TWITTIER: https://bit.ly/3dE9wo1 FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/3jdh9D1 PINTEREST: https://bit.ly/3jgpgi2 -- SUBSCRIBE to get the latest Black Frasier Episodes: YouTube: https://bit.ly/33yXkBX Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3a787Vd Spotify: https://spoti.fi/33FG1PA Google Podcasts: https://bit.ly/33B9Gt9 Stitcher: https://bit.ly/2F241SS iHeart: https://ihr.fm/3kkY8Ah Pandora: https://pdora.co/31z7Ru6 Deezer: https://bit.ly/3gFwpYN Connect with Phoebe Online at: Visit the Phoebe Robinson WEBSITE: https://bit.ly/3kxHrlo Like Phoebe Robinson FACEBOOK: https://bit.ly/3fCjnKg Follow @PhoebeRobinson on TWITTER: https://bit.ly/33DParN Follow Phoebe Robinson on INSTAGRAM: https://bit.ly/3a5xVAT Follow Black Frasier on INSTAGRAM: https://bit.ly/31pKiUC -- About Black Frasier: BLACK FRASIER. Moving on. Since I’m known amongst friends to dole out solicited (and unsolicited) life advice, I wanna spend each week - with a celeb guest - helping y’all handle your probs. #OliviaPope #MoreLikeOliviaDope #MomJoke. 39: Bitchy Yelp Reviews, The Hum Game, Teaching During COVID-19
As of this episode, we have all officially voted! Do you want us to be able to change out Trump's screaming face for sunglasses Joe? Get out and vote and make it happen! Laura became THAT paranoid pet owner, and Pam became THAT person who forgot her mask. As promised, we deliver dramatic readings of our bitchy Yelp reviews. Some of us are bitchier than others. 👀 We apologize in advance for this - we showed off our lack of vocal talent when trying to see if Google could identify the songs we were humming. WARNING: Don't fap during a work Zoom meeting, even if you think your camera is off. With covid-19 cases on the rise as predicted, pandemic fatigue (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/17/us/coronavirus-pandemic-fatigue.html?referringSource=articleShare) is setting in for many of us. Trump was a ratings LOSER (https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2020/10/16/biden-trump-townhall-ratings/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter) during the battle of the two town halls. And while we're sick of debates, we'll be hosting a chat watch party for EVERYONE during this Thursday's final Presidential debate. Join the #Millennial for all Discord here (https://discord.gg/nWKyFw) . Just half of registered voters expect to know (https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2020/10/14/deep-divisions-in-views-of-the-election-process-and-whether-it-will-be-clear-who-won/) the outcome of the election within a few days of November 3rd. We think it's important to mentally prepare ourselves for the possibility that we won't know the winner on election night. Here (https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/8-tips-to-stay-sane-in-the-final-15-days-of-the-campaign/) are some tips to help stay sane this election season. With increased awareness of police brutality, many primetime procedural police dramas are having to assess how they'll approach current events. How do police dramas fuel our implicit biases? We're joined by BAE supporter Amy, who's here to fill us in on what teaching is like during the pandemic. What are the pros and cons of face-to-face vs. digital learning? Amy shares the precautions being taken in her school. This week's recommendations will give you a nice break from election coverage: Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit (Andrew), Haunted Places (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/haunted-places/id1293860614) (Laura), BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky on Netflix (Pam), and 'Crying in My Car: A Podcast for Teachers (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crying-in-my-car-a-podcast-for-teachers/id1455748480) ' (Amy). And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: Andrew has written his pee pee tale, and we get a sneak peak preview read by Andrew himself! The panel is put to the test: do we remember what we learned in the 5th grade? Cringey work stories: we all have them. Between the panel and our Patrons, we've got every workplace horror story involving nudes, getting caught talking shit, POOP, and so much more.
