Track chairs give people with disabilities access to the great outdoors
The Florida Disabled Outdoors Association is working to connect people who have physical and intellectual disabilities with outdoors experiences, such as hunting, fishing and going to the beach. Recently, through a $20,000-dollar grant from the Fish and Wildlife Foundation of Florida, the nonprofit purchased a track chair. The track chair is like a wheelchair except it's electric, uses a joystick control and has tracks similar to a tank or bulldozer, which enables it to climb over uneven terrain. The nonprofit is working on a rental program in which track chairs are widely accessible in Florida. For now, three track chairs are available to access at Holton Creek Wildlife Management Area in Jasper; Blackwater Wildlife Management Area in Milton and Seminole State Forest in Eustis.
