Among persons age 65+ in 2021; 61% own smartphones, 44% have a tablet computer, 75% use the internet and 45% visit social media sites. During the pandemic and currently it is the job of Pamela to facilitate computer use among older adults. Her challenges are the same as in Denver.

Native American Bank got its charter from an act of congress because of a lack of services in Indian country. Anyone can bank with them but their focus is on Indian country. They currently has locations in 38 states including Alaska and Hawaii. They are more of a face-to-face bank to bring financial services to different tribes and reservations. Recently Native American Bank helped with $10 million loan as part of a health care facility in rural North Dakota. Native American Bank has recently acquired some capitol and they are looking to be expanding to have boots on the ground closer to where they are doing business.

Over the last decade, there has been a decline in adolescent in emotional and cognitive health with increased rates of mental health challenges. This could be due to the rise in social media, the pandemic, climate change, school shootings and other factors. Missed celebrations during the pandemic has also had a big impact. Around 70% of teens believe that anxiety and depression are a major problem among peers. Out of those diagnosed with a mental health disorder 75% will have had their first episode but the age of 24. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in college students. In 2021 in Colorado 182 youth between the ages 15-24 died by suicide. For parents, even if you do not think you see anything just ask your child how they are doing or what is going on with them at school.

Mile High Magazine 05/21/2023 FashionAbility Cultural Runway Show

Fashion is a way we can all experience art every day, it’s personal and relatable. On July 29, we will present FashionAbility, a runway show tied to Vibrant Accessibility, an exhibition with artworks from three artists, who are legally blind. One of the fashion designers in FashionAbility is also a model is a double amputee who also develops clothing. The vendor fair that is part of the show allows people to buy clothing and prints from the artists. The Impact Day is June July 30th and it is a day with workshops related to the exhibit and the runway show. The Vibrant Accessibility exhibition is free and open to the public. The FashionAbility show is presented by Denver Arts & Venues, When you attend a concert at Red Rocks, or a Broadway show at the Buell or even the FashionAbility show, that money is going to help support other events in the city.

May 15th kicks off Salvation Army week. The Salvation Army celebrated this week because it is the week that President Eisenhower felt that it was important to recognize their work in the United States. In Denver the Salvation Army is opening open houses to showcase the work they do and in the community. The Salvation Army started in 1865 in London and came to Denver in 1887. They have been able to help 350 men get into permanent housing in the last 18 months. They also have a food back to help with food insecurities, at the Aurora location they give out 500 boxed a week.

Mile High Magazine 05/14/2023 Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts

The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts’ popular Shakespeare in the Sangres kicks off June 16 and runs through July 2. The town of Westcliffe is just over an hour from Pueblo. The Jones Theater building opened in the 1880s as a saloon and around the 1920s or 1930s then became a movie theater and in 1960’s was sold to a man named Jones. In 1992 the theater was up for sale and bought and restored to a movie theater and started the Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts’ as a non-profit. The year Shakespeare in the Sangres will be featuring the pay Measure for Measure. Make sure to check out their website for all the other fun actives they have going on this year.

Alcohol is not talked about enough and there is still not a lot of education around it. There is a difference between someone that is misusing alcohol and alcoholics. Some of the signs are withdrawing yourself from friends and family or activities, you need alcohol first thing in the mornings, or even having more than the normal amount. Alcohol can lead to depression and anxiety. Alcohol will slow your metabolism down, over time it turns into cumulative fat. Obesity is a medical disease, we need to remind people to let go of judgement and to take the blame and shame out of it.

Morris Animal Foundation has been around since 1948 and they have always been based in Denver. They are a group that funds research globally that benefit animals through grants. They normally have over 150 studies which can total over $7 million in a year. Cancer is the leading cancer for dogs and cats over two years and one of Morris Animals biggest focuses. Horses have many studies that focus on their feet and legs. They have other studies that focus on all types of wildlife. They are in their 10th year of their Stop Cancer Forever campaign, which focuses on raising money for cancer research. They have matching partners that will match donations up to $100,000.

May is preservation month celebrated nationally and Historic Denver is hosting a series of events. The big event Historic Denver is on May 18th is called Love Old Buildings Expo, which will be held, at the Emmerson School. People can attend and learn how to care for old buildings. Walking Tour season has started with daily tours that run through October, explaining the different building and the history downtown. Another event on May 11th is going to be at the Molly Brown house.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is considered one of America's greatest days of giving! On the second Saturday of every May, letter carriers all over the country collect non-perishable food items while making their rounds delivering and picking up mail and packages. By mid-May most food banks supplies get depleted but are faced with an increase in need. On May 13th Postal Workers will collect non-perishable food left in boxes by your mail box and they get distributed to local food pantries. Last year in Colorado, letter carriers collected over 906,000 pounds of food.

Mile High Magazine 04/30/2023 Five Points Jazz Festival

This will be the 20th anniversary of the Five Points Jazz Festival. This year it takes place June 10 and will be up and down Welton Street between 25th and 29th gates open at 11:30a and music runs all the way through 8 p.m. This year there are 40 bands, 10 stages and about 100,000 people will attend. The parade starts when the gates open at the 29th street stage and kicks off with Guerilla Fanfare Brass Band. It is an event for the entire family and it is free to attend. Some of the performers this year are Colorado Mambo Orchestra, Annie Booth Big Band, Anisha Rush and the Encounter, Stafford Hunter and new this year is Rajdulari Experience.

Two Mile High Club that takes care of the donkeys in Cripple Creek Colorado. The donkeys were used for the mines and as technology grew, the donkeys were no longer and set lose with no one to take care of them. The new now adopt donkeys from rescues and the public. The Donkey Derby days started 82 years ago, to celebrate the donkeys and the mining in the area. Some of the activities might have a fee but the music, parade and the donkey races are all free. Two Mile High club release 12 donkeys on May 15 and they roam the town until October.

More than 6.2 million people in America have Alzheimer’s, and in Colorado there are 76,000 people and the number is going to be increase in the coming years. There is no cure. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that impacts an individual’s memory, thinking, language skills and their ability to perform certain task. People often get Alzheimer and dementia mixed up. Dementia is not a disease but a term to use to describe symptoms. Memory loss, confusion about time and place, difficulty in judging situations, changes in moods or personality are all signs of Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. On May 17th from 10a-1p the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America will be in Denver as part of the Educating America Tour. There will be experts and caregivers to talk about the sings and what is happening with the current research. The event is free, just go to the website to register.

Commercial aviation in America is projecting a shortfall of 24,000 pilots by 2026. This shortfall in the pilots has led to service reductions to rural and smaller communities and flight cancellations on routes. There is also a shortage of mechanics. America needs 12-18,000 more mechanics, now. Collectively, this shortfall of pilots and mechanics represent major job/career opportunities and especially for minorities and women. The organization Shades of Blue is helping to fill this need with its forthcoming career symposium at Wings Over the Rockies.

April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month. Distracted driving is anything that takes your eyes off the road; it puts not only yourself in danger but also others around you. Last year there were 65 deaths due to distracted driving; it was the worst year in Colorado history. The main reason was speed, not buckling their seatbelts, or driving impaired. CDOT is starting a contest, they are asking teenagers to come up with a :30-second public service announcement video that will convince the public not to drive using their phone, the winner wins $5,000. In Colorado, our cell phone laws are a lot weaker. The laws in Colorado are no texting and driving but you can still talk on the phone, the teens cannot talk on their phones while driving.

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) serves children who have been abused and neglected and are in the court system. CASA provides volunteer advocates to help insure the safety of children. April is Child Abuse Prevention, which helps to shine a light on these children and the problem we have in the area. A CASA advocate works with all the people who have a part in the child’s life. The ideal CASA volunteer is able to work independently and be able to look at a case and child/children and create a plan for what the child needs. A volunteer needs to be able to set boundaries and still have compassion.

Laura lost her son Johnny to suicide, he had had become delusional while using high potency marijuana concentrates often called dabs or vapes. They formed Johnny's Ambassadors which is used Marijuana youth prevention. They educate parents teens and communities about this this new high potency THC product and how it affects adolescent brain development and mental illnesses and sadly suicidalities. During Woodstock, the THC was 1-3% in the flower. In today's dispensaries, you can buy on average 20% THC per flower. It is easier to get marijuana for youth in Colorado then it is alcohol.

HPV, or human papillomavirus, is a common virus spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact that can sometimes lead to cancer. Luckily, there is a vaccine against HPV, and it can prevent nearly 90% of all cancers caused by HPV! The vaccine is recommended by the CDC for boys and girls at ages 11-12, but can be given as early as age 9. Joe is a survivor who found a lump on the right side of his neck; he shares his story with us and encourages parents to get their kids vaccinated.

The festival is three days and the main goal is to see a plover but also a chance to see Eastern Colorado. They have seen up to 70 different types of birds during the festival. Millennials are different from how they access and demand health care, they are the main group in the work force right now. Because of this change, it is causing studies with health care companies. The millennial generation is quicker to use emergency rooms, urgent cares, or telehealth and they are the lowest generation to use traditional doctors. Because of this mentality, it is harder to get an earlier diagnosis on long-term medical conditions. The health care providers are figuring out how to adjust to meet the millennials were they are to make sure they are still doing things such as yearly physicals.

Fresh Food Connect is a national non-profit that started in Denver that was formed to improve access to healthy homegrown food. One in three Coloradoans or one in four kids in Colorado will face food insecurity this year. During the pandemic one in three households started growing some part of their own food. Up to now, there has been no way to get that extra crop into the hands of the families that could use the food and the extra has gone to waste. Fresh Food Connect has started a mobile app that will allow small gardeners to donate any of their homegrown food, take it to their closest participating food non-profit, that non-profit then distributes the food to those who need it. Last year they had 2,700 gardeners nationally and collectively they donated 75,000 pounds, which helped 45,000 people.

PawsSecond Chance Rescue has been around for three years, it started as just a need with animals that have slipped through the cracks (being owner surrendered). If for they cannot take in the animals, they get the animal transferred to a shelter who can help them. PawsSecond Chance Rescue make sure the dogs are spayed or neutered and they make sure they dog has all of their shots. In the three years they have been around, they have placed over 100 dogs and they have not had any dogs returned to them. The dogs are not in kennels all day, they get to run around and play all day. Their biggest need right now is construction needs to help build five new indoor/outdoor kennels.

Blood work with your normal doctor might appear normal but they do not consider everything such as age or gender. A healthy lifestyle is the best medicine this includes a healthy diet, getting good sleep, exercise and managing your stress. A healthy diet should consist of a protein, healthy fats and limit sugar. Carbs are innocent; you just need to understand what is a good carb and bad. In addition, portion size is also important, portion sizes have gotten a lot bigger over the years.

Sober AF was started by Duke and his daughter as a way to provide a safe place for people to attend concerts and sport events. When they have a group go to these events, they have a sober tailgate and sober section at the events. The average age for the group is 20-30 but there is no age limit. Sober AF is helping with bill SB-171 which will require venues for over 7,000 people require 4% of the venue to have substance free seating. That would be 13 venues in Colorado.

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame started in 2011 by Chuck Morris. They have inducted 50 musicians, music professionals, venues and organizations. In order to be inducted, a person needs to have been performing for at least a 10 years and have had some impact on the state and turned the volume on Colorado music in some way. They are located in the trading post at Red Rocks and they are open 363 days a year and it is free to attend. This year Big Head Todd and the Monster and Hazel Miller will be inducted this June.

First Candle is committed to ending sudden unexpected infant death through education and outreach campaign but also providing support to families that have lost a baby to sudden unexpected infant death or stillbirth. SID stands for sudden infant death, SUID stands for sudden unexpected infant death. There are 3,500 SUID deaths a year; the rate has not gone down in 20 years. During the pandemic, while the rate stayed the same, the number went up for black children. Breast-feeding can reduce the rate of SUIDs by 50% but they also believe in meeting families where they are at and there is no shame if they cannot. The best way for a baby to sleep is on a very firm flat mattress on their back with no blankets or stuff animals.

Going into daylights savings, it can have an impact their sleep. If you are older, it can affect several days. People from 18-60 typically need seven hours of good sleep. To help prepare for daylight savings, start making the transition a few days before, adjust you clock ahead of time, use the light and darkness to help you adjust. Insomnia is the most common sleeping disorder. Insomnia is the inability to fall sleep or stay asleep. Another one is restless leg syndrome, people feel very antsy in their legs at night. Narcolepsy is people having excessive sleepiness or falling asleep while they are in the middle of something. If you are having problems sleeping, start by creating a good sleep hygiene. March is Women’s History Month and Molly Brown is a woman we should be celebrating. She was a staunch supporter of women’s rights, and an active member of the National American Women’s Suffrage Association. She even ran for office before women could vote nationally. She also survived the Titanic and became known as the heroine of the Titanic. There is a Molly Brown House Museum in Capitol Hill, they have been a museum for over 50 years. They have both guided and self guided tours. They have a special exhibit to showcase her experience on the Titanic. During Women’s History month, the Molly Brown House is having a tour called Women in the Gilded Age. April is the month that we remember the Titanic, starting in March and into April they have a few different events to explore the house and hear the stories.

March is colon cancer awareness month. People 50 years or older are more at risk of developing colon cancer. Personal history of polyps in the colon, family history of colon cancer, inflammatory disease, genetic inherited conditions area all risk for colon cancer. Recently they have also discovered lower vitamin D levels can increase your risk of colon cancer. The most common symptom is blood in the stool but other symptoms could be constipation, diarrhea, painful stools, abdominal pain, and weight loss. The new guidelines are people 45 or older should be screened. Healthy eating, less consumption of red meat, increase fruits and vegetables, eating more whole grains and fiber are the easiest ways to help prevent colon cancer.

Someone that is struggling with mental health might not have a substance abuse problem. If you take the substance out of it, you can really see what is going on with a person and then see if they have a problem with substances. Until you peel away the layers, you do not know what you are dealing with. You need at least 90 days to see what is really going on. Addiction can be part of genetics, nurture, and trauma. It is not a quick fix and takes time to figure out what is going on once you peel back the layers. In order for recovery to work, you have to want it.

The Denver Dumb Friends League is one of the largest animal welfare centers in the region. They have five location across the state. They try to provide comprehensive animal welfare for the community members. They offer classes, also have help lines, help with end of life, and even spay and neutering. As things started opening shelters there was an increase an number of pets being surrendered but they have been a slow down with cats, there is still a high number with dogs and they are also seeing a lot more strays coming into the shelters. DDFL and shelters around the country are seeing big dogs 40-50 pounds or bigger are being brought in more. The DDLF is doing a promotion of 40% off a dog 40 pounds or more, they had a goal to adopt 50 dogs during the promotion and they have doubled that.

Girls & Science is in its 9th year, it is a month long event that to get girls interested in STEM. The girls get a chance to meet women in the field and also gives them an opportunity to be hands on with different activities. There is a free kick off event from on March 3rd from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Girls Inc has created an activity box that include several experiments that girls can try at home. The boxes are $35 but Girls Inc has a sliding scale if someone is not able to afford that. They want to make sure no girl is turned away.

Food for Thought started 11 years ago as a simple idea of making sure kids at title one schools get meals to eat on the weekends. They started with giving meals to 300 kids. They became partners with Food Bank of the Rockies to get the food, had a space set up by Metro State University and started packing bags for the kids. Today they help 13,000 kids and 71 schools across the city. They have never missed a Friday in the 11 years even during a pandemic they did not miss a week. They never say no if a school needs help.

Eating Disorder Foundation provides free support services to the community based in Denver. Since the pandemic, they have gone National. They have been able to provide support groups and programs virtually. About 10% of Coloradoans are impacted by eating disorders. They are also seeing a lot of problems with people and body images and their relationship with food. Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses. Binge eating is the largest category of an eating disorder people fall into. Binge eating is when people will over eating or compulsive eating or even feeling anxiety around food. Recovery is possible and there is hope. Eating Disorder Awareness week is February 27- March 5th. This year’s theme is Its Time for Change.

Hope House is a supports 250 teen mothers from across the Denver Metro area. They offer three major programs to support the moms. One is housing support, which houses six mothers and their children but also housing support in other ways. They also provide early learning to the young kids while their mom is in class. Their major program is their empower program. They provide GED, college and career support as well as legal support. They also provide mental health support. There are 67% of the teen moms living under the poverty lines. Hope House is about to break ground to build a child care facility that will help with 100 children.

The Colorado Garden Foundation was formed in 1958, the same year as the Botanic Gardens. The Colorado Garden Foundation was originally formed to help raise money for the Botanic Gardens and now they also give out grants and scholarships. They give away between $700,000 and $850,000 a year. The funds that are raise at the shows stay in Colorado. The Colorado Garden and Home Show will start on 2/4 and will run until 2/12, Monday-Friday they offer two for one tickets. There will be eight gardens that will have over 8,000 flowers in bloom. After the show, the flowers that were used in the display gardens are donated to nursing homes around the city. On 2/8 they change out some of the flowers and if you go down right outside the show entrance, you can buy the plants for $2.00.

Damp January might be being more mindful so maybe cutting back one day a week or even one drink when you go out. The truth is no amount of alcohol is health. Step Denver is a men’s residential addiction recovery program that gives men with nowhere else to turn the opportunity to overcome the consequences of addiction through a program based on sobriety, work, accountability and community. Studies have shown that 70% of the people that are homeless is because of addiction and 70% of those people are men. What makes Step different is they are a peer recovery based recovery program. They require all of their men to work tax paying full time jobs and are not allowed to be on any government or third party assistance programs. After they leave Step, their case manager stays in contact with them for a year. Out of the men they are in contact with 83% stay sober, 85% stay employed, and 87% have stable housing.

The offer classes in car seats, babysitting, kids home alone, CPR, adult driving classes, defensive driving, safety skills for older adults. Some of these classes are offered free. For CPR the first thing you need to do is assess the scene, tap the person on the shoulder to make sure they are ok, call 911. The next steps are to check for breathing, then put your hands two inches from the chest and do fast and hard. There are four reasons you would stop; if you are to exhausted to continue, the person wakes up, it becomes unsafe or if someone who is more trained shows up.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. The State of Colorado is launching its 2023 campaign to raise awareness anyone can be a victim. Colorado Human Trafficking Council was formed in 2014, the team is made up of 35 people representing state and non-government agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors, regional coalitions and task forces, legal services, victim service providers, academia, faith-based organizations, and survivor leaders. There is no way to track how many people are being trafficking but it is being identified and the number of cases are on the rise. Aurora has two of the major transplant centers in Colorado. In Colorado and Wyoming there are 1500 people waiting for a lifesaving transplant and in the nation there are 108 thousand people waiting. Over 48 states and 32 countries will be represented in all of the events this year. New this year in the kids hall is the Calais Blacknose Sheep, they are real but they look like stuffed animals. There is a new rodeo format. The rodeo is a tournament style; the contestants get two attempts at each rodeo and a certain amount move on to the finals. There will be some new fun food to try this year as well.

This year there has been some bug concussions in the NFL. People need to be more aware of concussions and the impact they have on a person’s health. Some signs of a concussion are headache, dizziness, sensitivity to light, nausea, sensitivity to sounds, fatigue, even some changes in mood. Dr. McWhorter recommends parents taking their children into a doctor to get checked out before a sport season to get a baseline of their functions so that way they can see if there is something more going on if there is an accident during the sport. It is not the primary impact that is the scariest it is the second. If you return to a sport and the injury is not healed there is much more risk of severe complications from a second injury.

They have found that people will drive drunk at least 100 times before they are pulled over while driving impaired. About a third of the fatalities this year has been because of an impaired driver. Ronald McDonald House has been working to keep families with sick kids together. Being alone in the hospital can be a traumatic experience, especially for children. Between the two houses in Denver, they are able to house 118 families. Each room is very similar to a hotel room. They are also shared rooms, such as sitting areas and pay rooms for the kids. They have volunteers that bring in a home cooked meal to feed the families staying at the houses. It cost Ronald McDonald house $125 a night to house the families. A family can stay as long as their child is being treated. On December 1st was Light Up The House. They ask listeners to be a Ray of Hope; they commit to donate $20 a month for the year.

Started out as the Arvada Food Bank in 1982 and now we are known as Community Table. They distribute food to hungry families and do a number of human service projects to help get them in a better placed. They have a goal to collect 25,000 pounds of food starting November 14th and ending on December 25th to help offset pandemic-related declines in food donations from individuals and groceries “rescued” from local retailers. This year’s 25 x 25 food drive kicks off during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, designed to educate the public, draw attention to the problem of poverty. This is the 25th year that Vitalant has partnered with the Broncos to host blood drive. A person can donate whole blood plasma or platelets to be entered. All blood types and platelets are critically needed, especially type O, which is the most transfused blood type. O negative can be transfused to any patient and is used most in emergencies when there’s no time to test a patient’s blood type. National Prematurity Awareness Month in November, people do not realize that their blood donations are also boing to premature babies. Premature infants commonly need blood transfusions to fight anemia and other complications.

In Denver the minimum wage today is $15.87 per hour that's different from the state minimum wage that's $12.50 an hour. In 2019 the state legislature passed a law that allowed municipalities to set their own minimum wage and Denver stepped right up and passed a Citywide minimum wage that went into effect January 1st of 2020. The minimum wage in Denver will go up to $17.29 per hour on January 1, 2023. Food service industry workers get minimum wage of $15.87 per hour however the employer can subtract a tip credit of up to $3.02 per hour provided that they can document that the worker received at least that amount and tips. Part of the minimum wage act that past three years ago required the auditor to conduct active enforcement where minimum wage is not implied (food service, valet parking ect). It is also required the business post the current minimum wages.

The flu will have a higher fever and quicker; COVID will be lower and slower. September 1st the flu shot became available and it will take a few weeks before it starts to work.

They are also launching a Pound for Pound program, every time someone buys a pound of dog food Canidae will donate a pound of dog food to Colorado Pet Pantry and Animal Rescue of the Rockies. The program launched the beginning of September. Colorado Pet Pantry and Animal Rescue of the Rockies is facing a shortage of pet food, Canidae is donating 300,000 pounds to get them started.

There was a documentary called The Six. It is about a small group of Chinese men that were on the Titanic. The documentary breaks down where they were coming from and what happened to them. Garth Englund Blood Center is blood donation center in Northern Colorado for UCHealth. There has been a huge increase in need for blood donations but also because Medical Center of the Rockies is now a level 1-trauma center. It is a simple process, they need a photo id and they will do a take you into a private room to set up your profile and do the screening and then take you to do the donation. A typical donation takes 30 minutes total. One donation can save three lives. There is a blood drive coming up on the 17th and 18th in Loveland. Appointments are highly recommended but they will take walk-ins. Due to the pandemic, blood donations are down. There has not been a blood shortage this low in decades.

They have helped build curriculum that meets state standards that talks about world music and cultures. Kenzi's Causes serves low-income children across the state. Packz4Kidz is one of their programs that provides backpacks and school supplies for these children to start the school year. The serve over 6,500 kids in the state. For the backpacks picked up in Denver, they will also get a toothbrush and toothpaste. Also first come first serve, they will be given a water bottle and a lunch box. On August 13th there will be an in person event at the Denver Coliseum were the kids can pick out their backpacks that will be filled with school supplies. They also have a program called Kenzi’s Kids, they have 122 kids that they provide opportunity, access and resources to. The other program is Toys Shop, they provide Christmas gifts for over 17,000 kids in the state.

Coming up on Colorado Springs there will be a free, hands-on driver training that focuses on helping young drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in vehicle crashes: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, and speed and space management. Vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for novice teen drivers, and they are twice as likely as adult drivers to be in a fatal crash. The program is being put on by Ford Motor Company, Governors Highway Safety Association and Colorado Department of Transportation. Pre-registration is necessary. Step Denver originally Step 13 in 1983 in lower downtown when someone saw the number of homeless people suffering from addiction. His goal was to bring them off the street and help them rebuild their lives. Over the years they have seen an increase in the number of people with addiction that has led to homelessness. They require all of the men in the program to have a full time job. All of the funding for their programs comes from private funding/grants. Also the men in their program cannot not be on any government financial assistance other than medical.

Project Angel Heart makes medically catered meals for people who are living with severe illnesses. There is no charge and they are hand delivered once a week that includes meals for the week. If someone lives on the eastern plains they will ship the meals to them. Normally there is a medical referral for someone to receive the meals. So far they have served over 2,000 people. It takes 500 volunteers to help get a meal ready and delivered. It takes about $60 to provide a week’s worth of food. Coming up is Dining Out for Life on April 28th, there are over 100 restaurants that are going to give 25% of your check goes to Project Angel Heart.

There are many ways people can have a brain injury, the most common is when people hit their heads hard. Craig Hospital sees people from all over the country.

March is colorectal cancer awareness month. This is the third most common cancer among men and women and the second leading cancer death in men and women in the United States. The common age of diagnosis was 58-60 but now we are seeing younger people being diagnosed (younger than 50). 20% of those diagnosed are hereditary; the other risk factors are age, obesity, inactivity, diets high in red meats and processed foods, smoking, drinking and diabetes. Common symptoms to not ignore are blood in the stool, pain the rectum area, constipation followed by diarrhea and feeling of fullness after having a bowl movement.

Veterans Association Real Estate Professionals (VARP) Denver chapter was started in 2019 and they help all veterans get in to homes. Since they have been a chapter they have educated over 5,000 veterans about home ownership, and over 20,000 real estate professionals about VA loan benefits. Some of the veterans after getting into homes need furniture so (VARP) helps with that. They also help repair their credit or even getting disability from the VA. They have a golf tournament coming up in May to help raise money to for programs they offer though out the year.

Margaret Brown was a staunch supporter of women’s rights, and an active member of the National American Women’s Suffrage Association. She even ran for office before women could vote nationally. Speaking of voting she helped to make it so women could vote, and in Colorado, women were able to vote in 1893. Margaret Brown was also on the Titanic and since she spoke multiple languages, she was able to help some of the families when they got into New York. The Molly Brown House has an exhibit for Women’s History Month at the Museum, in April they will have an exhibit for the Titanic.

Project Angel Heart has been in Colorado for more than 30 years. They make medically tailored meals for people who are leaving with server illnesses. They deliverer more than 10,000 meals a week. Last year they served their 8th million meal. They have a registered dietitian that work with chefs to help with specific meal plans. They work with the person’s caregiver to make sure the person is eating the right things they need. A donation of as little as $10 is a big help to them.

I-70 Mountain Corridor Coalition is a group of 27 towns, counties and business along the I-70 Mountain Corridor and they advocate for long term improvements and work on short-term solutions for the traffic they have been experiencing. They just launched a campaign “Break Up with your Car”; is aimed at raising awareness at the many transient options to get from the metro area to the mountains. Bustang does not require a reservation but Snowstang does. Winter Park has also been running their Ski Train. There will also be options available in the summer to get to the mountains. All of these services help to take the stress off mountain driving.

There has been studies showing children who read to dogs improved their reading by 12% in 10 weeks. The children in the same program who did not read to a dog showed no improvement. Katy takes her dog Grace with her into classrooms and has kids read to her to practice their reading. Grace has an incredible connection with people and children. Katy started a book series about Grace and her life, the books are for kids ages 6-10. There are currently six books in the series.

The Backpack Society is to remove food insecurity for children so they can learn, grow and thrive. They work with schools to help kids get through the weekend. They fill their backpacks for them so that way the kids can be desecrate about taking the food home. Right now, they are delivering 160 student bags which serves around 40 families.
