Magazine Queens: The Editors Who Influenced A Generation
52 min

From the 1980s to the 2000s, before the Internet arrived, magazines were tops.

Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Dolly, Harper's Bazaar... there were so many.

They were filled with information on how to be a girl, or a woman, alongside glossy shots of models like Elle Macpherson, Sonia Klein and Claudia Schiffer.

But sadly, all these magazines and the brands behind them are now gone.

Deborah Thomas and Paula Joye have, between them, worked at, launched or edited pretty much every major magazine in Australia. Deborah was Mia's first boss when she started at Cleo and Paula and Mia shared an office there for years.

In this episode of No Filter, Mia, Deborah and Paula take a trip down memory lane and talk about everything from photoshoots with famous 90's models to working for the infamous Packer family to life after magazines.

You Can Spot A Favourite Child From Miles Away
It’s been a week for arguments about who gets to play who on stage and on screen in 2020. A Sydney production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been postponed after actor Hugh Sheridan was cast as the title character, while Sia has faced backlash after posting the trailer for her first feature film, Music, starring Maddie Ziegler as a young girl who has non-verbal autism. Plus, the theme of motherhood is the main focus of episode four of the new season of The Crown and in particular, the idea of having a favourite child. Margaret Thatcher reveals to the Queen her ‘favourite’ child, her son, is missing. The Queen is taken aback by the concept, and we then hear her reaction in this discussion with Phillip - who argues any honest parent does have a favourite. So what does it mean to have a favourite or be the favourite and does every parent really have a preference? And, over the weekend, two Sydney hospitality owners lashed out at “whinging, self entitled, young workers,” calling a work-life-balance “one of the most dangerous terms young people have been introduced to.” THE END BITS Recommendations: Read the New Yorker article about The Bridge dog here.  Follow us on Instagram @MamamiaOutLoud  CREDITS Hosts: Mia Freedman, Holly Wainwright and Jessie Stephens. How Ultra Violette Created A Cult Brand Almost Instantly
There are some products that you need but just aren’t fun to buy. Coat hangers, staples, ironing boards, flour... Here’s an idea for a business: find a product nobody likes buying and then make a version of it that people will describe as a “cult buy”. That’s what Ava Matthews and her business partner Bec Jefferd did when they noticed that skincare was having a moment but sunscreens were a product that just weren't very…. sexy. They changed that, almost overnight, with Ultra Violette. Their range of sunscreens come in distinctive bright blue packaging that you've probably seen all over Instagram. So, how did they do it? What was their approach to revolutionising a whole category?  Mia Freedman chatted to Ava to find out.  THE END BITS: Check out Ultra Violette here -  You can follow Ava Matthews on Instagram here -  Are you busting to start your own business but you don’t know where to start? Big Sister Hotline: Episode 40, Feat. ALEXANDRA COLLIER
I had an excellent conversation this week with ALEXANDRA COLLIER, a writer, theatre maker and sole mother by choice. Ally is one of the growing number of women choosing to become sole mothers through sperm donorship. She joined me to talk about motherhood, choices, the narratives we set for our own lives and the beauty we find in them, and why we need to separate maternal desires from our romantic ones.  From little sisters, we answer questions about always being considered the casual FWB and never the girlfriend; the feminist politics of cosmetic surgery and whether we should hide it from our friends; and how to rebuild a life and individual identity when you’ve spent decades in a relationship. Find Ally’s article here: Why I Chose To Be A Single Mum Find Tracie Morrissey’s article on emotional conquistadors here: The Emotional Conquistador is the New Sexual Conquistador Feedback/Question submission: Patreon: Instagram: **** (And remember, if you like the show then please consider rating and reviewing it!) **** Much thanks to the team at ROAR COLLECTIVE, who have taken on the task of editing this podcast each week! Whispering Em
Imagine for a moment that this podcast were a Theme Park, we’d probably call it something snazzy like Emsolation Land, and then this episode would be the BIG DIPPER, our Ultimate Rollercoaster Ride, this is the one that you’d gladly spend hours toasting in the sun, just waiting to finally get strapped into. In fact, you probably need this intro just to cushion you for the full experience we’re about to go on together. We start with Em’s intro, where she reveals how a panic attack inspired a request on socials for your most embarrassing high school stories. Em was hoping that by resharing them on the ‘gram it would help her, and everyone else, realise that we ALL have our own stuff. Then we step into all the different ways that Em’s anxiety chooses to display itself. For donkeys Em thought what she experienced was unique to her, but by talking about it, she’s realised that others feel the exact same way. So maybe when you’re listening to this, you’ll also find yourself going “oh my goodness, I feel nauseous too when I start getting anxious, or sleepy, or impulsive”. Then Em delivers what she described as “an absolute whirlwind, verbal explosion” which includes a moment where Michael has to leave to answer his front door, but Em just keeps the podcast going because she just has so much that she needed to say. There’s the new collaboration between Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa to reflect on, it would seem that Em wanted more, Michael however was happy with it. Barack Obama sat down with Oprah for an interview, which leads to a chat about what Em and Michael’s Presidential biographies would be titled. Em isn’t a fan of the title of Barack’s, but surprise, surprise, not really anymore but anyway, yes Michael was okay with it. We then arrive at the point of the podcast where Em launches into a very passionate 15 minute sermon on the John Farnham Musical, and why SHE should be playing John. Finally, we wrap up on the article that was written about Em and Michael’s friendship, just so that Em can critique him on his answers, she’s very sweaty by the end of all of this. Oh, she also nearly cries a few times as well, just out of passion...and anxiety. You basically won’t need to exercise after you’ve listened, because you’ll actually feel like you’ve run a marathon. It’s a total whirlwind, so strap in, keep your head down and avoid the flying dairy cows. There are no cows, that’s just a lame ‘Twister’ reference we threw in for added drama and effect.
