Our guest today is Pat Coyne, coach and owner of Black Sheep Performance in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Pat started helping clients of all levels reach their fullest potential after his career as a 4-star high school football recruit ended in college due to injury.  Pat started Black Sheep Performance in 2018 on the side of a house in Cincinnati, OH. Within 3 years BSP organically outgrew itself, working from renting gym space, to a barn, to a state of the art 11,000 sq. foot training facility.

Pat has mentored under some of the top coaches in the nation, is a progressive thinker, and gets great results with his clients in his fast-growing business.  When I moved back to Ohio in July, I connected with Pat shortly thereafter and have gotten several training sessions and conversations in with him since then.  Pat has a training style that fuses many of the elements I consider essential: A great environment, room for exploration/creativity, competition and reaction, as well as an integration of modern speed training methods, such as those taught by multi-time podcast guest, Adarian Barr.

As such, it was only a matter of time until Pat and I sat down together and recorded a podcast.  Two of the big things that Pat and I are both passionate about are being life-long learners and then looking at (and experiencing) the holistic effects of things like the training environment, athlete autonomy/creativity, and the effects of music, rhythm and reactions on performance.  On this podcast, Pat and I go into his background as an athlete and coach, his thoughts on structured vs. unstructured/open training, his progressions on speed training, rhythm, timing, how he challenges athletes on a holistic level, and some deeper discussion on the evolution of the human/sports performance industry.

Coach Blayne Lapan Graduated from Springfield College in 2012 with a B.S. in Applied Exercise Science and a concentration is Strength and Conditioning. After graduation he spent some time working as a Physical Therapy Aide as well as training athletes in the private sector at Conca Sport and Fitness in West Springfield Ma. In the fall of 2013 Coach Lapan accepted the newly developed position of Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at the Williston Northampton School, where he along with one of his mentors, Justin Geyer started the strength and conditioning program from the ground up. In the winter of 2013-2014, Coach Lapan accepted the role as the new head of strength and conditioning at the Williston Northampton School, where he continued to build upon the framework of the program into what it is today. In his 8 years at Williston coach Lapan has had the opportunity of training many stand out student athletes. Including 6 future professional athletes across a multitude of different sports, over 120 division 1 and division 2 scholarship athletes, and countless Division 3 athletes. He has been apart of a program at Williston where, on average, 20% of its senior class will go on to play college athletics. Coach Lapan uses an evidence-based approach to train his athletes a primary goal of injury prevention. It can be a lonely process for your client! I have MyFitnessPal app set so that it adjusts my calories each day based on how active I am. My base is set at my BMR which runs around 1500 cals on a day. I literally just stay home and chill. As I get my morning work out in and my daily steps and walking, it will adjust my calories up to around 2400-2800 cals that I should consume if I want to be eating the energy I need to fuel how many calories I’m burning that day. My goal right now is to gain strength and muscle, I am fairy happy with how I look right now and am quite lean naturally. Eating around this 2400-2800 calorie mark seems to be keeping my weight fairly steady or has for the last couple weeks and that’s me only working out 4-5 days a week. My question is, is this a good approach to adjust my calories based on my daily activity? I work shift work so I’m away working in a camp for 2 weeks then home for a week so adjusting my calories I think is necessary for my off week and also to make sure I’m eating enough for what I’m burning. Thoughts? 35:45 - I've recently progressed from an under-eating/chronic dieting state for about 9 months (around 1300 cal) to reverse up to a maintenance state (ended at 1900 cal, although I believe my true maintenance is around 2200-2400 cal with a high activity level). I am really interested in the G-Flux topic of "eat more, do more”. What is the best way to periodize my nutrition to get to that G-Flux state? I still have a smaller target of fat loss, but want to be cognizant of the best approach here, which I think is to continue my progression to my true maintenance phase before cutting again. 42:35 - I have been training for the past 18 years, I am female, 34 years old and my question is: how should a woman train in PMS?
