237: Patrick Coyne on Holistically Challenging Athletes, Evolved Speed Training, and the Art of Sports Performance “From the Heart”
Play • 1 hr 21 min
Our guest today is Pat Coyne, coach and owner of Black Sheep Performance in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Pat started helping clients of all levels reach their fullest potential after his career as a 4-star high school football recruit ended in college due to injury.  Pat started Black Sheep Performance in 2018 on the side of a house in Cincinnati, OH. Within 3 years BSP organically outgrew itself, working from renting gym space, to a barn, to a state of the art 11,000 sq. foot training facility.

Pat has mentored under some of the top coaches in the nation, is a progressive thinker, and gets great results with his clients in his fast-growing business.  When I moved back to Ohio in July, I connected with Pat shortly thereafter and have gotten several training sessions and conversations in with him since then.  Pat has a training style that fuses many of the elements I consider essential: A great environment, room for exploration/creativity, competition and reaction, as well as an integration of modern speed training methods, such as those taught by multi-time podcast guest, Adarian Barr.

As such, it was only a matter of time until Pat and I sat down together and recorded a podcast.  Two of the big things that Pat and I are both passionate about are being life-long learners and then looking at (and experiencing) the holistic effects of things like the training environment, athlete autonomy/creativity, and the effects of music, rhythm and reactions on performance.  On this podcast, Pat and I go into his background as an athlete and coach, his thoughts on structured vs. unstructured/open training, his progressions on speed training, rhythm, timing, how he challenges athletes on a holistic level, and some deeper discussion on the evolution of the human/sports performance industry.

11:15 What Pat believes held him back from being successful on the college level after being very successful (and physically fit and gifted) in high school, and what he would tell his younger self from his place now as a coach

16:00 How Pat uses games and a holistic approach to connect dots in his training programs/process

27:40 Ideas on how structured versus unstructured training, as well as the importance of being in the moment without expectations, in the training setting

46:50 How Pat’s speed training process has changed over his years as a coach

54:15 A chat on rhythm and timing in coaching speed and athletic movement, as well as using musical beats to time up various training movements

1:04.00 What Pat sees as the evolving purpose of the profession of a strength coach and the deeper purposes of training and coaching in the physical realm

1:14.15 Three things that go into Pat’s mind before each training session that tell him “this is what will make a great session”

“(To my younger self) I would go and spend time doing everything that I didn’t want to do”

“You have these training sessions which are comfortable and build people up, and it’s very ego driven to where you have your athletes feeling to where they crushed the day, and there is truth in that.  But.. how uncomfortable did you make your athletes in a healthy way, in a safe environment, to where they could fail, to where you could see how resilient that athlete is becoming”

“I want to see the full human being first, then we can smack the weights”

“I feel like you make the most progress when you are having fun… why does a kid make progress so fast.  Why do we throw that out when we are working with a pro athlete?”

“They may have got their asses kicked,

Coach Blayne Lapan Graduated from Springfield College in 2012 with a B.S. in Applied Exercise Science and a concentration is Strength and Conditioning. After graduation he spent some time working as a Physical Therapy Aide as well as training athletes in the private sector at Conca Sport and Fitness in West Springfield Ma. In the fall of 2013 Coach Lapan accepted the newly developed position of Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at the Williston Northampton School, where he along with one of his mentors, Justin Geyer started the strength and conditioning program from the ground up. In the winter of 2013-2014, Coach Lapan accepted the role as the new head of strength and conditioning at the Williston Northampton School, where he continued to build upon the framework of the program into what it is today. He has been apart of a program at Williston where, on average, 20% of its senior class will go on to play college athletics. This is well above the national average of 7% of high school seniors who will move on to play at the next level. Coach Lapan uses an evidence-based approach to train his athletes a primary goal of injury prevention. Simultaneously he works to improve the strength, power, and movement quality of his athletes to help them improve athletically and ultimately reach their goals on the playing surface. Coach Lapan takes pride in the fact that he coaches the “whole athlete”. He realizes that strength and conditioning as well as athletics is an excellent vessel for teaching kids about the challenges that life will bring him. He strives to teach his athletes the power of commitment, work ethic, leadership and health and fitness. He realizes that everyone, regardless of there skill level, will have a life after athletics and the life lessons learned under the barbell can be indelible for a developing athlete. E206: Marcus Leoni :Tren, Permanence and Morality
Join us for this week's episode of RX’D Radio where Dr. Jordan Shallow is joined by Marcus Leoni for a rather deep and introspective chat about drugs, politics, morality and the meaning of life. Marcus is a Powerlifter and member of the Hybrid Performance team down in Miami, Florida. The duo discusses everything from Tren to “the weeds”, and the differing moral considerations behind recreational and performance-enhancing drug use. Outlining some of their experience within the strength and coaching industries, we are given insight into the often poor choices that are made surrounding the use of PEDs, and some considerations to make prior to partaking. Touching on political and religious views, the conversation takes a deeper turn towards the meaning of human existence. Shallow and Marcus discuss Nihilism, the caveats to this belief and what this means for the greater purpose of human existence. At the end of the day the boys bring it back to the choices you can make to forge better human connection, create greater impact in the world around you and leave a mark on human history. Need direction on what to read next and would love your input. 28:40 - I have a job that is fairly labor intensive. On an average day I’ll get anywhere from 10,000 to 25,000 steps a day. I have MyFitnessPal app set so that it adjusts my calories each day based on how active I am. My base is set at my BMR which runs around 1500 cals on a day. I literally just stay home and chill. As I get my morning work out in and my daily steps and walking, it will adjust my calories up to around 2400-2800 cals that I should consume if I want to be eating the energy I need to fuel how many calories I’m burning that day. My goal right now is to gain strength and muscle, I am fairy happy with how I look right now and am quite lean naturally. Eating around this 2400-2800 calorie mark seems to be keeping my weight fairly steady or has for the last couple weeks and that’s me only working out 4-5 days a week. My question is, is this a good approach to adjust my calories based on my daily activity? I work shift work so I’m away working in a camp for 2 weeks then home for a week so adjusting my calories I think is necessary for my off week and also to make sure I’m eating enough for what I’m burning. Thoughts? 35:45 - I've recently progressed from an under-eating/chronic dieting state for about 9 months (around 1300 cal) to reverse up to a maintenance state (ended at 1900 cal, although I believe my true maintenance is around 2200-2400 cal with a high activity level). I am really interested in the G-Flux topic of "eat more, do more”. What is the best way to periodize my nutrition to get to that G-Flux state? I still have a smaller target of fat loss, but want to be cognizant of the best approach here, which I think is to continue my progression to my true maintenance phase before cutting again. 42:35 - I have been training for the past 18 years, I am female, 34 years old and my question is: how should a woman train in PMS? I have an idea and heard some stuff of course, but I am really curious about your thoughts around this topic. 50:25 - How would one achieve body recomp at maintenance? 57:50 - If you ever produced a product or product line, what would it be?
