Maria Wilkes

(MA Education), researcher, teacher, tutor, writer, speaker and mentor

Maria Wilkes is a language teacher at one of the top all-girl schools in London and is a private tutor. Maria left her position as a teacher and took a chance to compete in the U.K.’s countrywide competition to become the British representative at the Miss Universe pageant. She wanted to break the stereotype and offer an alternative view to those who believe that beauty pageants are degrading.

Our guest is dedicated to her mission to empower young women beyond the classroom, and Miss Universe is the perfect platform to do just that. Maria's experience as a teacher and tutor has alerted her to the harsh reality of what it’s like to be a young person searching for meaning in today’s world.

Over the past decade, Maria has been researching and building a scientifically-driven parenting guide to ensure that our current generation of young people become the most inspiring future generation of leaders. Her goal is to build a community of conscious parents who will band together to fight the emotional epidemic amongst the younger generation.

TOP TIPS

Enjoy and Ride the Journey of Life

Enjoying the journey does not mean that you should stop setting goals or that you should swap your work ethic for leisure. Just don’t let a single a goal dictate your life. Enjoy the pursuit of your goal with some diversions along the way. You need the ambition to keep you on track. But it should not close you off from others pursuing other paths even if they lead nowhere. Enjoy the path that leads you to your destination.

It’s important to look at all the good things in our lives and to enjoy them to the full right now. That is much more likely to bring happiness than waiting for it to appear around the corner.

Have Courage

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the strength to overcome it. Being courageous means being fully aware of the challenges and dangers ahead, feeling the fear associated with those challenges and dangers, and having the determination and drive to push through that fear and tackle them head-on.

The only thing that will help you feel more courageous is taking action, stepping outside your comfort zone, and sending yourself the message that you are a courageous person.

Develop a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is an idea that, with effort, it's possible to increase intelligence levels, talents, and abilities. Anyone who demonstrates a growth mindset believes their abilities develop over time, tend to seek out opportunities to gain new knowledge and broaden their skills, and do not typically shy away from challenges

Having a growth mindset is essential to lifelong success, and it is something that the youth can develop with practice at an early age.

Bonus Tip:

Everything that you do is consciously or unconsciously driven by one of 6 human needs. These needs motivate and inspire us to take action in positive ways. However, when some of these needs are not met consistently, your mind will unconsciously find ways to satisfy these needs. How your mind does this is not always good for you and can lead to addictions.

Tony Robbins identified these 6 human needs and how they are behind everything that we do. If you have a behaviour that you can’t seem to stop, then it is likely that one of these 6 human needs is behind it.

6 Human Needs

1. Certainty
We all have a need for certainty, comfort, stability and security.

2. Uncertainty/Variety
We all have a need for uncertainty, variety, excitement, and surprise.

3. Significance
We all have a need to feel significant, special, unique, or important in some way.

4. Love & Connection
We all have a need for love and connection.

5. Growth
We all need to grow and evolve in some way.

6. Contribution
We all need to contribute in some way so our lives have meaning.

The** first four needs** are the “needs of the personality” – you will meet these needs whether you know it or not.
The last two, “growth” and “contribution” are the_ spiritual needs_ – these are what bring us lasting fulfilment.

Dr. DJ Moran | The 2 Step Process for Facing Any Challenge in Your Life and Coming Out On Top
In today’s episode, we cover Acceptance Commitment Therapy with Dr. DJ Moran. Dr. Moran has a Ph.D. in Psychology, is the founder of Pickslyde Consulting and the MidAmerican Psychological Institute, and has helped thousands of people and hundreds of companies develop the skills for keeping vital commitments.    Nothing will hit as hard as life will, so what can we do to better handle those hits and come back stronger and better equipped to handle the future while also striving to be the best versions of ourselves?   What to Listen For What is Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and how can it help you deal with all the challenges and setbacks life throws at us? What is psychological flexibility and why do we all need it so life doesn’t crush us in difficult moments? What are the biggest challenges when it comes to changing our behavior and how can ACT help you overcome them so you can live the life you want? What questions do you want to ask yourself to figure out what changes you need to make and can make so you can be the best version of yourself? What can you do to take control of your life and lead a life based on your values rather than someone else’s values or society’s values? What is the Mindful Action Plan and how can you use it to implement ACT in your life to make the behavioral changes you want? What is counter-conditioning and how can you use it to embrace discomfort and “negative” emotions so you can start leading the life you want?   A full range of human emotions is necessary to lead a fulfilling life, but many of us associate certain emotions with negativity, thus leading us to avoid or suppress feeling those emotions. Consequently, we then avoid the events or activities that lead to us feeling those emotions when those events and activities could be exactly what we need in order to grow as individuals, professionals, friends, lovers, etc. It’s important to be able to accept all of your emotions and develop a comfortable relationship with them and yourself so you can lead the life you want.   A Word From Our Sponsors Share your vulnerabilities, victories, and questions in our 17,000-member private Facebook group at theartofcharm.com/challenge. How to Trade Expectations for Appreciation | A Fireside Chat with Tony and Sage Robbins (Part 2)
Tony and Sage sit down for an intimate fireside chat to unpack the stress many of us feel around the holidays. We all have rules and beliefs about how things are supposed to be or how people are supposed to be. And when they do not meet our expectations, we suffer. The holidays can hold a magnifying glass over these expectations, whether that be family dynamics, budgets, or how well the turkey turned out. Listen as Tony and Sage suggest a new approach: To replace expectation with appreciation, to lead with gratitude and thanksgiving instead of worry, fear or anger. Sage eloquently calls us to take pause on the list-making and to-do’s associated with getting ready for the holidays. And Tony provides us with an invaluable tool for how to get more joy out of each individual moment and experience. It’s time to make a decision about what kind of holiday you want to have, to bring a new level of enjoyment for yourself and to be a blessing to those you love most. “What’s wrong is always available, so is what’s right.” - Tony Robbins About The Fireside Chat Series: In the 1930s and 40s, a time when the country was struggling even more than it is today, we had an amazing leader named FDR. He began doing evening radio programs called “fireside chats,” designed to communicate directly with the American people. At that time, 90% of people in the U.S at that time had a radio. Today, 96% of people have a cell phone and nearly all have internet access. Instead of being unified and watching all the same things, and having a collective experience, now we're all kind of separated. And we can see division in our culture. We desperately need a form of unity, a form of connection, more humanity and more kindness in the world. Tony and Sage thought to bring back this time-honored tradition of a fireside chat as a means of unity and compassion. We’re entering the winter season, drawing inward into our homes and into ourselves, reflecting on the hardships and blessings alike this unique year has brought. In this three-part series, you will hear them dispel their hopes and dreams for you this holiday season, as well as share some of Tony’s powerful tools and strategies to not only survive the coming months, but to step up and thrive.
