MY POLICEMAN AND DON'T WORRY DARLING UPDATES-episode 244-olivia wilde, florence pugh, adore you
Harry Styles is confirmed to star alongside Emma Corrin in a movie based on My Policeman, a story about a married man who falls in love with another man during the 1950s. The book is told from the wife’s perspective and deals with love, marriage, and the homophobia of the time. We talk about the importance of queer people telling queer stores and dig into the directing/producing history of the team telling this story (big thanks to Stef for this one!). We also have fun looking at behind the scenes photos for Don’t Worry Darling, the movie Harry is just wrapping filming for, starring Florence Pugh and directed by Olivia Wilde. Neither of us have read the script yet so we make guesses as to what the blood stains mean on Florence's dress, why Harry’s head has fake blood, where Harry’s tattoos went and how long it took them to cover with makeup, why Harry is wearing a floral apron, and whether or not there is a time jump in the movie based on one picture where their outfits seem to look like something one may see today. We also talk about Olivia Wilde’s interview/conversation with director of Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell, for Variety. Wilde talks about her approach to directing and the emphasis she puts on creating a comfortable, non-hierarchical, warm environment for all crew and actors on her sets. She seems like a damn good person and an awesome director! Check out Talk Direction Down Low (TDDL) on patreon.com/talkdirection for EXTRA PODCAST CONTENT!! This week we discuss Zayn's Coors dream commercial and live watch the commercial ourselves. We also listen to the live demo that Louis released of Walls. Harry, Lucia, and I all had birthdays so we discuss quarantine birthdays and then I ask a bunch of random questions including: Whose album will we get next?, Which of the boy's solo albums should Niall cover?, and Will Harry have more fruit songs in the future? 7: Most Annoying Phrases, Fled Cruz and Winter Storm Uri, Clubhouse
What's a phrase people say all the time that you hate? We "did a thing" and got feedback LIVE on air! And friend of the show Shane brings some Los Angeles sunshine to the panel this week! It's happening again: people continue to cause destruction by celebrating their unborn babies' genitals via explosion (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/22/nyregion/gender-reveal-explosion-ny.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&fbclid=IwAR3nWVRY6GwD8PNfC_OIEcIWfdK0wndKgydtFgkKiqq0-_RAsJAU-M0Tdo8) . Do we wish ill on anyone? No. Do we care that Rush Limbaugh died? Also no. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is under fire after the state Attorney General released a report indicating that Cuomo's office underreported the number of COVID-related nursing home deaths. Can we sympathize with his position? Winter Storm Uri has devastated much of the southern and middle United States. Particularly in Texas, where the power grid has been deregulated for two decades because dErEGuLaTiOn MeAnS fREedOm.  As if the human and infrastructure toll wasn't bad enough, consumers are now having to fight power bills for tens of thousands of dollars (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jonathanponciano/2021/02/20/17000-electric-bill-deregulated-power-grid-texas-griddy/?sh=3c725cc258ba) . Flyin' Cruz, Cancun Cruz, Fled Cruz: how many names can we come up with for a Senator for abandoning his state in the middle of a crisis? Meanwhile, AOC and Beto O'Rourke have picked up the slack for Ted to show Texans what real leadership looks like. Remember, Texas: y'all can vote this fucker out in 2024. Dolly Parton says "thanks, but no thanks" to a Tennessee state Capitol proposal for a statue of her likeness. Do we allow smartphone apps to track us? We don't think so... but maybe, kinda sorta. Can we just get a villain origin story that doesn't try to humanize the villain for once? Clubhouse: what we like, what we're confused about, and whether or not you're missing out by not having early access. We've got a little bit of everything in this week's recommendations: Follow @NASAPersevere for the adventures of a real-life Wall-E (Andrew), Gino's pizza in Atlanta (Laura), Silicone popcorn poppers (Pam), and 'The Warmth of Other Suns' by Isabel Wilkerson (Shane).   And in this week's installment of After Dark, available on Patreon: What the hell did Armie Hammer do, and how does it relate to online dating? Will someone this rich and connected actually face consequences for his actions? We cover some of our Patrons' cringiest online dating stories, and they remind us of a few of our own.
