Business Lunch
Roland Frasier
Episode 216, Daymond John’s Biggest Takeaways From 2020
“All the success that he (Daymond) has achieved has happened because he combines intelligence with an incredible amount of hustle, and this is critical; humility. I’ve never seen somebody so willing to give and so willing to share it. And that is exhibited right now at this moment because he’s here talking with us.” Ryan Deiss Daymond John doesn’t need much introduction among entrepreneurs. He is an American businessman, investor, television personality, author, and motivational speaker. In this episode of Business Lunch with Roland Frasier, we get to sit and hear what guest Daymond John had to say to the participants of Ryan and Roland’s 21for21Challenge. You can read more about that here. “The biggest breakthroughs happen when we’re kind of backed up against the wall. That’s when we’re forced to act. We tend not to fix things when they aren’t broken. So that’s really what this, 2020 has been about a year of learning”. Ryan Deiss. Listen Today For, • Why Daymond is always optimistic, even in a year like 2020.  “But many times you see that these people, your staff, and your customers and your partners and strategic partners, they step up. I’ve also seen a lot of tragic things happen around the country, but I’ve also seen people who have nothing go out of their way and give what they can. So I’m always an optimistic person about what’s going on in the world.” Daymond John. * The two different kinds of people there are in the world and how they respond to difficult times. “COVID has just highlighted either people’s weaknesses or people’s strengths.” Daymond John. * The importance of your WHY. * The big thing he learned from 2020 that he will take into 2021 “What are you really selling you in your business, in your brand? What are you promising somebody? And the best way to do it is to explain it is like if you’re a gym and you’re selling people gym memberships, and you think that that’s what you’re selling people, know that you’re selling them a healthy lifestyle, you’re not selling them gym memberships. So, understand what you are delivering to somebody, and you’ll realize that your brand or yourself, you’re much larger than you thought”. Daymond John. * The flip-side tip not to forget. “Don’t do things that are not in the area that you’re at, just because it’s an easy way to make money because you will repel customers just as quickly. I’ve seen that happen already as well.” Daymond John. Thanks so much for joining us this week. Want to subscribe to Business Lunch with Roland Frasier? Have some feedback you’d like to share? 279: SaaS Revolution: An Inside Look at Starting A Software Company
Thinking about starting a software company? This week’s guest is giving you a behind-the-scenes look at exactly what to expect. Michael Facchin is the ultimate bootstrapper. His digital marketing career started in freelance, then he built an agency, Search Scientists, but soon came to a daunting realization: His business wasn’t future proof. With the rise of AI and Facebook Ads becoming more intuitive, he knew manually pulling the levers for his clients’ ad spend wasn’t going to last forever. Thus, Ad Badger - a software tool designed to optimize Amazon PPC - was born. It’s been over two years since Michael was last on the show and I’m so excited to have him back. Not only is Michael one of my closest friends, but he’s an expert at PPC and in today’s episode he’s sharing the ins and outs of starting a software company, the pros & cons of bootstrapping vs joining an accelerator, having VC funding, and a few key insights he’s learned on his entrepreneurial journey. If you’ve ever considered starting a software company, this episode is for you. Enjoy! Episode Highlights * 5:38 Mike’s journey from biology teacher to ads agency owner * 8:03 Growing a business as a result of the rise of AI * 12:11 Why Amazon has the best ad platform for direct response marketing * 15:12 A bootstrappers mentality vs the accelerator mentality * 18:45 How to determine if an accelerator is a good idea for you * 21:05 The metrics Michael focuses on most to move his business forward * 23:23 Mike’s unique perspective on retirement * 26:19 How Michael is evolving his workhorse mentality and detangling himself from entrepreneurship * 31:27 The motivation behind diving into entrepreneurship * 34:55 The hardest part about starting a software company * 41:01 How Michael and his team use the scrum methodology and why they are moving away from Slack * 46:27 What Michael wishes he could tell his younger self * 48:28 The number 1 thing every entrepreneur should have on their entrepreneurial journey * 50:54 Michael's favorite book on entrepreneurship that changed his leadership style for the better * 53:14 Is Ad Badger right for you? Jay Papasan - The ONE Most Important Focus For Every Business
Today we are chatting with Jay Papasan, co-author of The One Thing who works alongside Gary Keller, of Keller-Williams Real Estate. Jay comes from a publishing background and has worked with some big names such as Mia Hamm and Bill Phillips to help them get their books published. He currently serves as the Vice President of the learning division of Keller-Williams, and today we talk about his perspectives about writing books, course creation, lead generation, time blocking, goal design, and more. Jay also talks about knowledge management, which is a rabbit hole that we’ve been looking into, so the part where he dives into how to consume books and his process of reading and locking in the knowledge was a real win. Plus we talk about how to be well rounded and pulling sources and information from all walks of life, so as not to live in an echo chamber where our learning is stalled. After you’ve listened be sure to check out our previous show with The One Thing’s Geoff Woods for more goal setting tactics and our show with Jeff Spencer where we chat about the roadmap that champions follow and how to find the right goals for you. “When we talk about a process for self-improvement, you have to read, you have to reflect on what you read, and that reflection is where you’re comparing your experience and your beliefs to what this person is telling you. And then you have to codify it in your notebook.” - Jay Papasan Some Topics We Discussed Include: * What is Matt’s ideal job? (guitarist for a punk rock band? Instructor for a shark cave diving school? tune in to find out!) * How to read with purpose * Time blocking to get more done and extra time for the things you love * The one most important thing for every business * Misconceptions around The One Thing concept * When you should be challenging your beliefs * Tips on learning that will cut out time-wasters and books you should probably not finish * Why you want to read books on finances and money every year, even if you are an English major * And much, much more!
