The Night Stalker
It’s May 30, 1985, in Burbank, California. Spring is turning to summer, and the wide streets in the San Fernando Valley are lined with their signature palm trees. A 42 year old woman named Carol Kyle is at home with her 11 year old son. She doesn’t know yet that there is a man in her neighbourhood, driving a stolen car.  At some stage during the night, in the shadow of darkness, this man enters her home. At gunpoint, he binds Carol’s son with handcuffs and ransacks their house, demanding she tell him where her most valuable items are hidden.  Once he has collected a number of valuable goods, he rapes Carol, ordering her not to look at him while shouting threats at her. She complies.  When he is finished with Carol, he retrieves the little boy and binds him to her mother with handcuffs.  Then, he flees the scene.  Both Carol and her son survive this attack.  They are lucky.  So far that year, the Night Stalker as he will come to be known, has killed six innocent civilians. The year before, he killed two others. The youngest being a nine year old girl.  He is in the midst of one of the most destructive murder crime sprees in American history. But he isn’t like your text book serial killer. He is a serial rapist, kidnapper, pedophile and burglar, murdering some victims while letting others go.  For those who survive, they will never forget his face. It is the face of a monster.    CREDITS Guest: Detective Gil Carillo Host: Jessie Stephens Audio Producer: Ian Camilleri Producer: Gia Moylan   CONTACT US Tell us what you think of the show via email at truecrime@mamamia.com.au   Join our closed Facebook community to discuss this episode. Agafia Lykova - the woman who's lived alone in the wilderness for 70 years
When she was born, Agafia's father had become convinced that their family was being hunted by the Russian government, so he had packed up the whole family and escaped into the Siberian wilderness - hundreds of kilometres from any other humans. Agafia is now 76, the rest of her family has died, and she is still living - alone - in the tiny hut her father built back in the 1940s. She has only left her home a total of six times in her entire life, and if not for being discovered by chance in the 80s, nobody would ever even have known she was there.  If you want to see Agafia performing for the camera, start by watching these 2 videos:  VICE documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt2AYafET68 RUSSIA TV documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFK3DJ7Kn6s&pbjreload=101 Read this stuff: Read this excellent article from Smithsonian magazine: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/for-40-years-this-russian-family-was-cut-off-from-all-human-contact-unaware-of-world-war-ii-7354256/ If you can track down a copy of Vasily Peskov’s book about the Lykov family, apparently it’s excellent: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1166194.Lost_in_the_Taiga Read about the influencer who put Agafia’s life at risk by flouting social distancing rules during the pandemic… https://igvofficial.com/updateworlds-loneliest-hermit-has-been-put-at-risk-of-covid-19-after-influencer-takes-a-trip-to-see-her/ And you can go to Google Maps and see exactly where she lives: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lykov+family+settlement/@51.4608556,88.4183531,15z/data=!3m1!4b1 RECCOS: Watch 'I Care A Lot' on Amazon Prime: https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0TIXYYBH7U617YC52G595LGU44/ref=atv_hm_hom_c_8pZiqd_2_2 Read the Forbes article about Britney's (lack of) wealth: https://www.forbes.com/sites/maddieberg/2021/02/17/britney-spears-net-worth-revealed--and-its-shockingly-low-compared-to-her-pop-peers/?sh=50a826f718ac See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mark 'Chopper' Read's legacy of violence
Contrary to popular opinion, Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read was no underworld mastermind and his criminal history was littered with blunders. His police record shows that when he broke the law he was usually caught and convicted. But he was a master story-teller and here, in a series of never before heard tapes, we hear from the real Chopper. Recorded in 1999 - late at night in his car with the help of his friend, Jim Beam bourbon - Chopper talks into a tape recorder about crimes he hadn't been convicted for, how to dispose of a dead body and his run in with Alan Jones on live television.  It was while serving one of these long jail stints he learnt that writing sentences beat the hell out of serving them. For it is as storyteller that Chopper Read will be remembered and with good reason. He knew the dark side fascinated solid citizens, or as he said, “Posh people love gangsters.” For years, Read was available to any reporter looking for a quick one-liner on matters of crime, which meant the underworld head-hunter was hunted for a headline. And that, at least initially, was Read’s motivation. He always wanted to be remembered - and he has got his wish. Thanks for listening. The Boys Who Don’t Brunch With Girls
Everyone is talking about high school boys, after the head prefect at Cranbrook Senior School stood in front of a full assembly and told his mates they need to change their attitudes to women. But on the show today, we discuss whether or not single-sex education plays a role. Plus, Australia is going back to work. Sydney’s CBD is apparently now back at 65% of its pre-COVID capacity. Melbourne is moving quickly towards a 75% plan. Brisbane’s been back for a while… and we’ve definitely forgotten some of the things that happen in an office. And, our best and worst of the week. THE END BITS  Read the full Cranbrook speach here. Click here for the episode of This Glorious Mess with Daddo's mum. Recommendations: Check out Louis Theroux's podcast here.
