L'eggo my Ego! | #1343
Ordinary Time, 24th Sunday (A) Sometimes, we must do things that are counter-intuitive. When out water-skiing, don't pull the handle closer to your body. If you feel isolated and disconnected, you need less screen time, not more. If you worry what people will think of you, then you need less control, not more.
Forgiving my brother is counter-intuitive. Yet Jesus knows that we can't give our own lives the security, value, and love that we desire. The tighter I cling to my own ego, the more I make myself responsible for my own security and value. And the worse it gets. Forgiving others helps me to slide back into the sweet spot of gratitude and generosity.

Sometimes You Love from a Distance | #1342
Ordinary Time, 23rd Sunday (A) The Lord be with you! It is easy for us to forget that God is with us every day. Christmas reminds us that God-is-with-us, not just for 33 years, but forever. The Eucharist reminds us that the Word becomes flesh, and not only in our churches, but also within us.
Remain in His love! If I want to truly love others, I must first allow God to love me. From that place of being loved by God, I am able to truly love others.
Judgement and mercy go hand-in-hand in the heart of Jesus. God judges the wicked and invites them to new life. We must call out bad behavior and also invite people to true life.
If my brother sins against me... I remain in God's love. The door is open, mercy is offered, but I need to love him from a distance. I'm not going to let my brother's negativity move me out of God's love.

A Cord of Three Strands Is Not Easily Broken | #1341
Ordinary Time, 22nd Sunday (A) What do you think, what do you feel, when you hear the words, "God's will"? If you have a negative reaction, then you have something in common with the prophet Jeremiah. His life was so hard that he becomes a foreshadowing, a prophecy, of the Christ.
Last week, we learn that Jesus is The Christ. This week he reveals that he will be a sacrifice, not a successful and powerful earthly king. Jesus does not see God's will as an outside imposition on his freedom, but rather as a path that leads to true life.
We too are made to be a sacrifice. "Man cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself." When I trust in God's plans, I lay down my life, and in the end get what I really wanted. Learning to discern God's will and trust in him is a process of intertwining that unfolds over time. Even St. Therese of Lisieux had to learn to trust God and fold her will into his: “I realize as never before that the Lord is gentle and merciful; He did not send me this heavy cross until I could bear it. If He had sent it before, I am certain that it would have discouraged me . . . I desire nothing at all now except to love until I die of love. I am free, I am not afraid of anything, not even of what I used to dread most of all . . . a long illness which would make me a burden to the community. I am perfectly content to go on suffering in body and soul for years, if that would please God. I am not in the least afraid of living for a long time; I am ready to go on fighting.”

Going Deeper: Prayerfully reflect on Paragraph 24 from Lumen Gentium:
24. God, Who has fatherly concern for everyone, has willed that all men should constitute one family and treat one another in a spirit of brotherhood. For having been created in the image of God, Who "from one man has created the whole human race and made them live all over the face of the earth" (Acts 17:26), all men are called to one and the same goal, namely God Himself.
For this reason, love for God and neighbor is the first and greatest commandment. Sacred Scripture, however, teaches us that the love of God cannot be separated from love of neighbor: "If there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.... Love therefore is the fulfillment of the Law" (Rom. 13:9-10; cf. 1 John 4:20). To men growing daily more dependent on one another, and to a world becoming more unified every day, this truth proves to be of paramount importance.
Indeed, the Lord Jesus, when He prayed to the Father, "that all may be one. . . as we are one" (John 17:21-22) opened up vistas closed to human reason, for He implied a certain likeness between the union of the divine Persons, and the unity of God's sons in truth and charity. This likeness reveals that man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.

Bad Steward, Good Steward | #1340
Ordinary Time, 21st Sunday (A) Shebna, the Master of the Palace, has been building a monument to himself. God will replace him with a better steward. God sees three qualities in Eliakim that make him a good steward: he is a servant, a father, and dependable. By not serving himself, Elaikim will be a blessing for his family and others.
God has given you the gift of your own life, and made you a steward of his creation. If you are a husband, a father, and the head of a household, you have been entrusted with a great stewardship. God is looking for the same things from you as he was from Eliakim.
Do you want to be a great steward? I suggest three things:
* Make time for daily prayer. Prayer is a really important way for a man to admit that he needs help. In prayer God reveals himself to us, and also shows us who we are.
* Pay attention to your inner life. Others need to feel safe in your presence, to feel seen and valued, to be able to flourish. To do that for others, we need to de-clutter our minds and hearts, to Confess and forgive.
* Volunteer. It helps us move out of the downward spiral of "What's in it for me?" and into the spiral of blessed, grateful, and generous.

Three Life Lessons From Whitewater Kayaking | #1339
Ordinary Time, 19th Sunday (A) I recently paddled down a whitewater section of the Wolf River. Among other things, I learned three important lessons that also apply to the spiritual life.
* Hug the rock. When you get stuck on a rock, you naturally try to push away from obstacle. Pushing away from the obstacle in a strong current will cause your boat to capsize -- and make things infinitely worse! Leaning towards the obstacle ("hugging the rock") keeps you safely above water until you can maneuver free.
In a similar way, we often push away from life's obstacles, but trying push the problems away often makes things worse. Leaning into the problems helps us to resolve them and then move on.
* Look for the eddies. An eddy is a calm spot behind a rock or obstacle. You can pull your boat into these calm spots and catch your breath.
In a similar way, we often need to step out of the rush into a quiet moment of prayer and reflection. Choose silence and God will find you there, like he met Elijah.
* Surf the waves. Right below the waterfalls, the current actually flows upstream. You can maneuver your boat into this spot and "surf" in the rushing current.
There are crazy times in life when you just can't "eddy out" into silence. Jesus will come to meet you, and help you find calm in the midst of the storm.

Sharing in the Glory of the Son | #1338
Feast of the Transfiguration (A) I recently visited my old seminary and checked out their brand-new chapel. The chapel encourages the men to be authentic. It encourages them to be in community. And it encourages them to find their true identity as beloved sons of God the Father.
At the Transfiguration, we see that Jesus is not standing alone. Jesus is "in Communion" with Moses, the great lawgiver, and Elijah the great prophet. We see his radiant glory as the Beloved Son. This is the One who made Moses glow when he gave him the law on Mt. Sinai. He wants to make your faces glow with love and joy. Listen to him, and you will share his glory now and forever.

Finding Buried Treasure | #1337
Ordinary Time, 17th Sunday (A) Young Solomon has just become king. God offers to give him one gift. What would you ask for? Success in war, fabulous wealth, a peaceful kingdom, popularity? King Solomon, however, asks for a wise and understanding heart.
Nowadays, there is an abundance of information but a critical shortage of wisdom. Our elders seem less wise and the young don't make time to listen to them. If you want to become wise, where do you start?
The first step of wisdom is realizing I'm not very wise. Being honest about my need for wisdom is the place to start searching. What are the things we have pursued that turned out not to be true treasure? Where have we found true treasure? Take time to sort things in your life. Throw out the bad fish and keep the good ones. Wisdom, at its deepest level, is seeing things as God sees them and loving what God loves. Draw close to God and you will become truly wise.

Why Is the Master Patient with the Weeds? | #1336
Ordinary Time, 16th Sunday (A) Catholic teaching is true and good and beautiful. When I live my life according to the truth, I bear good fruit. Others, however, are living for themselves and bearing bad fruit. Why doesn't God do something about it?
God has been watching and waiting patiently. He is confident that his harvesters will be able to sort the good from the bad. You can only tell the wheat from the darnel when the fruit appears. God is waiting to see what kind of fruit will appear. Perhaps we are the ones who most benefit from God's patience.

The Burdens We Carry | #1335
Ordinary Time, 14th Sunday (A) The king is coming, and he is coming in peace. He is humble, poor, and afflicted. Only the "little ones" would want such a king. Deep down, we are all humble, poor, and afflicted, though we do a good job making ourselves look mighty, noble, and powerful.
The prophet Zechariah is writing about Palm Sunday. He is also writing about God's Kingdom of peace that is coming. Between the coming of the King and the final fulfillment, there is a gap. I believe that priests are called to bridge the gap.
How is Jesus' yoke easy and burden light? I came to Jesus and I couldn't imagine a heavier load than priesthood. But I began to realize that most of the burden I was carrying was my own ego, weighed down by my expectations and fears. When I come to Jesus, I accept the reality that I am poor, afflicted, and weak. Jesus loves me and works along side of me. Jesus carries the heavy load.
Your ego is a terrible burden. Your fears are a terrible burden. Your expectations and those of the world are a terrible burden. Compared to these heavy burdens, God's yoke is easy, and his burden is light. Come to Him and experience it for yourself.

The Source of True Security | #1334
Ordinary Time, 12th Sunday (A) Security leads to maturity. Maturity leads to purity, that is, to the ability to truly love people. Despite the appearances of security, many of us are affected by a deep feeling of insecurity. We might turn to money, success, or a spouse for a sense of security, but none can give us true security.
Jeremiah finds security in God's love for him. Through my 30 day retreat, God showed me that he had always been with me. Many of us think that God is mad at them or disappointed in them. The truth is that Jesus died, not for "everyone", but for each of us.
When you become rooted in God's love for you, no one can take it from you. Stay rooted in the security of God's love for you and you will bear much fruit.

Sheep on a Mission | #1333
Ordinary Time, 11th Sunday (A) I just returned from my 12th pilgrimage to Champion Shrine. I feel most like a shepherd when I am on walking pilgrimage. I find myself counting my sheep and making sure they are all on the right track. A pilgrimage is a public witness to the importance of faith.
Jesus calls the Apostles by name and reveals the Father's love to them. Then he sends them out to their Jewish brothers. They must remind them who God is and who they are. We, too, must witness to brothers and sisters who have forgotten who they are and who God is.
When men fail to love as the Father loves, the people around them feel like sheep without a shepherd. Men must guide, provide for, and protect God's children. The most important step is to get down on our knees and admit to Got that we need his help. Love is our mission and God will help us to fulfill it.

Food For Our Pilgrim Journey | #1332
The Body and Blood of Christ (A) My First Communion was a bubbly, tingly experience. That was probably caused by the alcohol, and not so much the Holy Spirit. Other times with the Eucharist were more blessed. I think of attending holy hours with my father, being part of the procession in Orvieto, and seeing my life change through daily prayer in front of the tabernacle.
There are two key mistakes that modern Catholics make. Our Enlightenment worldview sees everything as matter, energy, and atoms. Catholics sometimes act as if the Eucharist were the only place that God is still present in the world. Instead, the Eucharist should open our eyes to see that we ourselves, the world around us, and fellow human beings are all sacramental.
We think of faith as a static, sitting-in-church kind of thing. Ancient Christians saw their faith as "the Way" and we were walking with Jesus on a journey to eternity.

The Puzzle of Individual vs Community | #1331
Most Holy Trinity (A) Communism sacrifices individuals to maximize the common good. Consumer capitalism maximizes individuality at the expense of the common good. Can we have both? Yes! The Holy Trinity is unique individual persons and at the same time a community of love. We are made in the image and likeness of God. That means that we were made to be unique individuals whose gifts contribute to the common good. We "fit" into a community.
Let's look at two communities that cherish individuality. The family is blessed with unique individual children who make up a community of love. Even at a young age children can begin contributing to the common good. A local parish church brings unique individuals into a common bond of love. In the family, and in the parish, the human community mingles with the divine community. Our uniqueness reaches its full potential in communion with God and others.

Holy Spirit is Life and Love | #1330
Pentecost Sunday (A) The Catholic Church year begins with Advent. We need a savior but we cannot save ourselves, so we watch and wait for His coming. Hopefully at some point you experience Emmanuel, God-with-you, during this season. We respond to his love by purifying our hearts an Lent, and dying and rising with Christ in Holy Week. After 50 days of Easter feasting, God sends the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is meant to be a renewal of the gift of the Holy Spirit. Why do we not experience the outpouring of the Spirit? Perhaps we are not open to receiving a gift from God. Say with me, "Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and enkindle in me the fire of your Love."
The Holy Spirit is life. Our life breath is a gift from God. As members of the Body of Christ, we must have the life of Christ flowing in us. When we pray, "Come, Holy Spirit," the sense is that I already have the life of God flowing within me. I want more of his life in me.

Jesus Ascends so the Holy Spirit Can Descend | #1329
The Ascension of the Lord (A) The Messiah will be a new King David and will restore the kingdom to Israel. When Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the people shout, "Hosanna to the son of David!" Pilate is mocking them with the inscription over Jesus' head. Then he rises from the dead with all power in Heaven and on Earth. Instead of unleashing hell on his enemies, he ascends into heaven. Why?
Jesus' kingdom is not of this world. When Jesus is in the flesh, he can only be in one place at one time. Now through the Holy Spirit he can be in all times and all places. He ascends so the Holy Spirit can descend. To find out what the coming of the Holy Spirit means, you'll need to listen next week.

Easter, 6th Sunday (A) What does St. Peter mean when he says, "Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts"? He is inviting us to set apart a special place in our lives for Jesus. Monasteries have a cloister that is closed to the world but open to the heavens. So our hearts must have a place that is open to the presence of God but protected from the world.
Mothers receive a tiny gift of life. They nourish and cherish it, and it grows into a 9-pound baby. In a similar way God's gifts often seem insignificant. But it we cherish them, they will grow strong. Set apart a time in your day and a place in your home for God. Every Sunday at Mass, open your heart to receive God's gifts and then save and treasure that gift.

Tuning In To Your Vocation | #1327
Easter, 5th Sunday (A) We often think of a vocation is a special call from God. Some are called to be priests or deacons, to join religious life or marriage. Many of us keep our heads down and hope God doesn't call on us. Or maybe you have been waiting for a call and wondering why it hasn't come through.
Then you clearly weren't paying attention to our second reading. Jesus has called you to be a living stone in his temple. You are a royal nation, a holy priesthood. You offer to God the daily sacrifice of loving others and serving God in the world. Your sacrifices come together at Holy Mass. You receive the gift of Jesus and you take him to every corner of the county.
A television has nothing to offer unless it is tuned to a signal. In the same way, we are called to be tuned in to God so others see His image in us. Come to Mass; we have good reception. An Unexpected Guest | #1326
Easter, 3rd Sunday (A) You are driving home from church one day when you suddenly realize that someone is riding in the back seat! You panic, until he introduces himself as none other than Jesus Christ. "I've always been with you," he says, "but you were never able to see me until now." You spend the rest of Sunday together. Monday morning he is still with you, and he plans to join you at work.
As strange as this may sound, the Christian faith is built on this very idea. Jesus is with us, first, because God is everywhere. But secondly, the very same Spirit that connected Jesus with his Father also connects you to Jesus. And third, you became a member of the Body of Christ. You volunteered to reveal Jesus' presence in the world.

Merciful Jesus, I Trust in You | #1325
Easter, Divine Mercy (2nd Sunday) The world has moved on from Easter, but we Christians are staying close to the empty tomb. Today the Resurrection teaches us about God's mercy. Our English word comes from a price paid, wages, from merc-, merx merchandise. It is a generous gift of God, like the ransoming of a captive. The Greek word is eleos (as in Kyrie, eleison). It means pity or compassion. The Hebrew word is khesed and it means God's covenant faithfulness even when we are unfaithful. The Latin word is misericordia and it comes from two words, misery and heart.
The very heart of mercy is the Sacred Heart of Jesus. When we suffer, God suffers. As a visible sign of God's invisible suffering we see that the risen Jesus is carrying wounds in his feet, hands, and side. He responds to our rejection, not by rejecting us, but rather by reaching out with compassion and mercy.

New Life Growing from the Empty Tomb | #1324
Easter Sunday • I have good news--the tomb is still empty! The empty tomb doesn't really prove the Resurrection. You have to notice the Risen Jesus working in the world.
Brenda Shepherd wanted to join the Catholic Church and she got a little help... from the Holy Spirit. When she joined the Church, she was so radiant with joy, you could see the Resurrection shining on her face. We know the Resurrection is real because of God's continued action in our lives and in our world.
Is our belief in God reflected in our schedule, our budget, or our choices? We often find that we have a hard time fitting Jesus into our lives. But if you put Jesus in first, everything else will fall into place. Start a new life with Jesus as the cornerstone.

The Secret to Jesus' Success | #1323
Good Friday of the Lord's Passion • Jesus was the most successful man that ever lived. Was he smarter, stronger, or tougher than the rest of us? No, Jesus was successful because he was obedient. He did his Father's will, and that's what made him successful.
We, too, will be successful if we are obedient. We need three things to succeed: Faith, trusting that our Father knows best; Hope, knowing that things being hard now often means it will be worth later; and Love, our Father loves us and calls us to love others. Gaze on a crucifix, meditate on Jesus' obedience, and ask for in increase of faith, hope, and love.

Why We Wash Feet on Holy Thursday | #1322
Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper • This Mass commemorates so many beautiful things: the welcoming of the holy oils, the institution of the Eucharist, and the gift of the Priesthood. Then we have to go and ruin it by washing feet. Thank you, Jesus, for finding a way to make us all feel awkward.
Last summer I attended a wedding reception where the groom washed his bride's feet. It was tender and beautiful and not at all awkward. Jesus is about to leave his disciples in charge of his Church. Jesus is the perfect Servant Leader, and he wants to give authority only to those who are willing to serve.
I wash feet so that you will know, "I got the memo." But I am also inviting the men, the husbands and the fathers of the parish, to do for others as I do for them. Go home and wash your wife's feet. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi | #1321
Palm Sunday (A) The Latin phrase, "Sic transit gloria mundi" (thus passes the glory of the world), is a sobering reminder that everyone who seeks the glory of this world will end up disappointed. Peter is worried about what people think of him; he winds up weeping bitterly. Judas is motivated by money; he hangs himself. Pilate is motivated by power; he winds up feeling powerless. Even the chief priests, who seem to have gotten exactly what they wanted, have set themselves up for the biggest disappointment in history.
Jesus does not seek the glory of this world. He does his Father's will and seeks the glory of God. Jesus can look back on the Passion and say, "It was worth it. It was all worth it. You were worth it." Joseph of Arimathea had spent a lot of money on a monument to himself. But then he turned it all over to Jesus. Do not seek the gloria mundi. Follow Jesus and you will be able to say, "It was all worth it."

Faith that is Stronger than Death | #1320
Lent, 5th Sunday (A) Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus, then the son of a widow from Nain, then finally Lazarus. The first had been dead a few minutes, the second many hours, and the third was a rotting corpse. Martha and Mary have enough faith to not give up on Jesus even when he seems to ignore them. Jesus wants to give them something more than a healing; he wants to give them a faith that is stronger than death.
Jesus goes right to the place where it hurts. "Show me where it hurts," he says. It hurts Jesus, too. We have to take away the barriers that keep this place rotting within us. We have to let Jesus raise the places we feel dead and hopeless. The human race has always been "tied up" by the fear of death. Jesus unties the human race and lets us go free.

How to Exercise Authority | #1319
Solemnity of St. Joseph • Today we celebrate the saint that was Jesus' earthly father and husband to Mary. His wife was sinless and his son was God, so if anything went wrong, clearly it was Joseph's fault. Why would God put someone in that situation? And how did Joseph manage to succeed at a seemingly impossible task?
Dr. Bob Schuchts writes in the book Be Transformed that Holy Orders is given to help us overcome the wound of confusion. This chapter made me uncomfortable for two reasons. First, because I exercise authority over my flock, and second because I must obey the authority of the Pope and my Bishop.
Those in authority must serve their people, not make the people serve them. It must be exercised an accordance with the truth, and motivated by love. Unity is the fruit of good authority exercised well. Most importantly, Joseph is obedient to God's authority. He knows that he cannot succeed on his own so he relies on God's guidance and power. Open My Eyes, Lord | #1318
Lent, 4th Sunday (A) If something bad happened to you, according to Old Testament logic, you must have done something to deserve it. But what if you were born blind--were your parents being punished? No, says Jesus, this happened so that God's works could be made visible. Jesus then cures the incurable, symbolically fashioning new eyes for him from the clay. In doing so, he exposes the Pharisees who have eyes but refuse to see.
Let me share with you two healings that I experienced. I went to my healing prayer retreat with a sore back. Praying for healing didn't to anything for me... until I rejected my fears and renounced an inner vow. Then the pain and tension went away.
My family lived in five states when I was growing up. I was left with no home town. I had to go visit my old home and grieve the loss. After that I was finally able to feel at home again.

Stop Praying Like a Pagan | #1317
Lent, 3rd Sunday (A) Jews looked down on Samaritans as apostates from the true faith of Abraham. Jesus doesn't avoid them. In fact, he travels through their territory, finds common ground, and spends two days with them. God has not forgotten his Samaritan children.
Let's talk about paganism. The pagans had lots of gods. The gods were personifications of all the powers and forces that are outside of human control. The pagans tried to win favor with them so they could be blessed and not smitten.
On the contrary, Christians believe that there is only one God. All the forces of this world, and the spiritual world, are servants of God. Faithful, obedient servants in the case of natural forces and the angels. Rebellious, disobedient servants in the case of the demons. God is a Father who loves his children. Far from being insignificant, you can trust that God is moving heaven and earth to give you the very best.

Transfigured by Delight | #1316
Lent, 2nd Sunday (A) At the Transfiguration, Jesus glows with heavenly light. Perhaps he is seeing the Beatific Vision? This fancy term refers to the fact that the saints in heaven see God and are overawed by his indescribable beauty and glory. Seeing God is the primary source of happiness in heaven.
Jesus gave up seeing the Beatific Vision when he became incarnate. Perhaps now, just a few weeks before his death on the cross, Jesus is given a glimpse of his Father's face. The disciples cannot see God but they see the glory of God reflected in Jesus. Even the reflected glory is so delightful that they want to stay there forever.
Right now, God the Father is gazing at you with the same love, delight, and glory with which he looks at Jesus. Sometimes we can catch a glimpse of God's delight. The Devil Was Trying to Steal Something from Jesus | #1315
Lent, 1st Sunday (A) What can we learn from the temptation of Jesus? We can expect that Lent will be challenging. Temptations will be rolling up to your door. You can expect lots of opportunities to choose love and to be faithful to God.
The first two temptations begin, "If you are the son of God..." The devil is after something very specific -- he wants to steal Jesus' identity as Son of God. Will God really provide for you? Will God really protect you? You don't really have to obey your Father.
Our true identity is found in our Father's love for us. Lent is a time for us to say: "My Father will protect me, he will provide for me, and I choose to be an obedient son."

Ash Wednesday • The Prodigal Son went off to a distant country and partied his inheritance away. Every night the father wondered where his son was and was he safe and well. The son didn't feel the distance between them until the money ran out. Then he came to his senses, got up, and started the long journey home.
This is us. We run after the pleasures of the world. We are so busy trying to fill ourselves that we don't notice the distance between ourselves and God. One day we realize how empty we have become. The ashes on our foreheads say, "Today I woke up in the pigsty, and I come to my senses and started my journey back to my Father."

Can I See Some ID? | #1313
Ordinary Time, 7th Sunday (A) The biggest crisis of our time is not war in Ukraine, ongoing pandemics, or natural disasters. We are suffering from a crisis of identity. We don't know who we are. We don't know what we were made for. Consequently, we don't know what to do with ourselves.
Baptism teaches us who we are. In fact, it gives us not just one, but three identities. First, God adopts you as His child. Your Father will love you, protect you, guide you and provide for you. Second, you become a temple of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will give you the wisdom to know the call of God and the power to accomplish it. Third, you become incorporated into the Body of Christ. And that means that you will suffer with Christ, responding to evil with good.

Just Good at Looking Good? | #1312
Ordinary Time, 6th Sunday (A) "Thus says the Lord..." are the words Moses used when teaching God's law to the people. "But I say to you...", says Jesus, who claims to be the very God who taught Moses. Do you really want to be good, or are you willing to settle for looking good?
Haven't murdered anyone lately? Great! But don't feed your anger, don't insult, and don't name-call. Don't try to prove your own innocence lest you be investigated and all your faults be exposed. Quit while you're ahead.
It's good that you haven't committed adultery, but what have you been thinking in your heart? Don't feed the attractions to things that are not good.
Are you fully honest when you report on your taxes? Do you try and shape the narrative in a way that flatters you or makes others look worse? The Lord has created us to be simple, honest people. Every choice shapes us in a particular direction. Don't settle for just looking good. Focus on having a thoroughly good heart.

The Power of One Candle | #1311

I just took my Christmas tree down. I managed to make it last all the way to February 2nd. The Feast of the Presentation commemorates the moment when Mary and Joseph presented the Christ child in the temple. Only Simeon and Anna could see the profound meaning behind this ordinary moment. They see with the eyes of faith and they shine with hearts full of love.
We, too, are called to see with the eyes of faith and to shine with the Light of Christ. We may not feel very bright, but our "Yes" can help others to see more clearly and to shine more brightly.

I Feel So Blessed When... | #1310
Ordinary Time, 4th Sunday (A) Jesus is the new Moses, teaching the new law to the new Israel. He starts his teaching with happiness. What does it take to be happy? The word for "blessed" here in Greek is "makarioi", a happiness that comes from abundance. I look at all the blessings that God has given me and I feel happy; I am makarios.
Paradoxically, the first thing that makes me happy is being "poor in spirit". When I feel like a beggar, I can have confidence that God will fill my neediness with abundant blessing. The experience of hungering, mourning, and being persecuted is not pleasant, but we can be happy because we are confident that God will fill us and comfort us.
The next four beatitudes are things that I can develop: meek, merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers. They are the fruit of a life lived with Jesus. When we look at Jesus on the cross we realize that the Beatitudes describe Him perfectly. When our life fits the beatitudes, we should rejoice, for we are where we a…

Why So Few People Choose the Road to Happiness | #1309
Ordinary Time, 3rd Sunday (A) Why did the disciples drop everything to follow Jesus? They were expecting him to be the King, and his kingdom to be a kind of paradise on earth. Instead, Jesus went and got himself killed. Did they really want to follow a crucified Messiah? In the end, almost all of them did follow him to the cross.
We all want to be happy. But we end up looking for happiness like a blind pig rooting for truffles. Happiness seems to always elude us; the things we think will make us happy end up disappointing. Why can't we find the road to happiness? It happens to be the very opposite of what we would choose for ourselves. To find lasting happiness we have to take up our crosses and walk the way of self-giving love.

Behold the Lamb of God! | #1308
Ordinary Time, 2nd Sunday (A) We are familiar with the term, "The Lamb of God," but do we truly know what it means? It means that Jesus is innocent and pure, a perfect sacrifice. Let's talk about sacrifice.
Adam and Eve have two sons (Genesis 4). The older son, Cain, raises crops. The younger son, Abel, tends sheep. They both bring an offering to God from the blessings God has given them. This is the principle of "first fruits." The second reason for sacrifice is atonement for sins. A third reason, found throughout the ancient world but not so much among the Jewish people, is sacrifice to obtain some blessing or favor from the gods.
The Jews had a special sacrifice that was also a sacred meal. It was the annual spring Passover where a lamb was sacrificed and then eaten. Jesus replaces the Passover lamb; he is the one true sacrifice offered once for all. Does this mean we no longer offer sacrifices?

The Father Blesses His Children | #1307
Mary, the Mother of God • Today is New Year's Day. It is also the 8th day in the Octave of Christmas and the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. Christmas is too great a feast day to fit into a single day. With Mary we "ponder these things in our hearts." Today we "zoom out" from the Baby Jesus and reflect on the spiritual motherhood of Mary. The Church believes that God has called his mother to be our spiritual mother. She is, in a sense, standing behind our earthly mothers. I encourage you to get to know your spiritual mother.
We also see the spiritual Fatherhood of God in today's reading. First, we see God naming his Son, "God saves." The second thing we notice is that God adopts us as his children. The third thing we see is God blessing his children. This blessing makes perfect sense if you picture yourself holding a little baby. These words are what you might want for that child and what the child might want from you.

Christmas, Midnight Mass • Shepherds shiver in the cold. Wise men search the night sky for light. A young couple welcomes God's love and brings warmth and light into the world. The shepherds are warmed and the wise men are enlightened. They go home carrying His warmth and light in their hearts and sharing it with all they meet.
We gather to celebrate Christmas in a world that is cold and dark. We need to draw near the stable. We need to let God warm our hearts and enlighten our minds. Then we can sing "Joy to the World" and share his love with all people.

When Did God Start Preparing for Christmas? | #1305
Advent, 4th Sunday (A) When did God first prepare to give us Christmas? Tradition holds that the curse of the serpent in Genesis 3:14-15 is also a prophecy. A descendant of the first woman will one day destroy the power of the Devil.
God then promises King David that one of his descendants will have a kingdom forever. This son of David will also be a son of God (2 Samuel 7:8-17).
Ahaz, a descendant of King David, refuses to ask God for a sign. He is given a sign anyway, the sign of a virgin birth (Isaiah 7:10-14). The Messiah will defeat the Devil, establish a forever kingdom, be the son of God and born of a virgin.
But why does God send us a baby? We ask God for so many gifts, and instead of blessing us with peace or hope or any of those things, he offers us a baby. He wants to be Emmanuel, God with _you_. We shy away from letting God be with us because we either want to be in control or we are afraid that we are too much of a mess.
Mary and Joseph teach us to respond differently.…

A Kolache Waiting to be Filled | #1304
Advent, 3rd Sunday (A) A look around the world tells us that God is both a brilliant engineer and a creative artist. Then we look at ourselves and often see a mess. Did God screw up when he made me? I am unique and that means there is a special place in the universe that only I can fill.
If I fill a spot, then why do I feel empty? We are like kolaches without filling, we are "batteries not included." Only a relationship with God will fulfill us. So why do we keep God at a distance? We might think that I'm not good enough for God. Or we might think that God couldn't possibly be safe or satisfying.
Antigo Area Catholic Churches was featured in America Media's People of God documentary. We don't really want to give God 100%. And consequently, we don't ever really experience the transformative power of the Gospel. We try and fill ourselves but only feel more empty. Disciple, Mother, Queen | #1303
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception • What can the Immaculate Conception teach us? Mary is first a disciple of Jesus. She listened to Jesus, she followed him to the cross, and she was faithful until the end of her life. She gives us an example of discipleship.
God is our Father, Jesus is our savior, and we are surrounded by spiritual brothers and sisters, the saints. There is one thing missing: a mother. God has chosen Mary not only to be the mother of his son, but also to be the mother of all his children.
Mary is also queen. The Kingdom of Israel had a tradition that the mother of the king was #2 in the kingdom. When Jesus takes the throne as a descendant of David, he follows the tradition of his native people and makes his mother the Queen. Jesus and Mary work together to bring us to the Kingdom.
We only have one Savior, Jesus. He saved Mary and preserved her from all sin for our sake. It is for your sake that Mary was conceived immaculately.

The Harder I Try to Fill The Emptiness, The More Empty I Feel | #1302
Advent, 2nd Sunday (A) Every person is unique; each of us is handmade. We bear the fingerprints of God and we each reveal the face of God to the world. God made us for himself. We were meant to be filled with the light of Christ and to shine with the light of Christ. The emptiness we feel is not a sign that there is something wrong with us. We have a hard time remaining empty and trusting the Master to fill us and paint us. The emptiness makes us uncomfortable, so we stuff ourselves.
Tradition speaks of three sources of temptation: 1) The world. People around us aren't content to live simple lives. We think that we need to live overstuffed lives, too. 2) The flesh. Being empty is uncomfortable. 3) The Devil. God isn't the only spirit active in the world. The Enemy tricked our first parents into grasping instead of receiving. "The Tinder Swindler", so-called Simon Leviev, promised his victims a great life but just used them for their money. The Enemy does the same thing in reverse. The…

Why We Often Feel Empty | #1301
First Sunday of Advent (A) A lot of work goes into welcoming guests for a holiday meal. The whole family needs to help clean, tidy, decorate, prepare food, and dress for success. Advent is a time to prepare, and not just for a family visit, but for a visit from the King himself.
How did Jesus come to be king? He and his Father made everything that is. The whole world that surrounds us belongs to God, and he gave it to his Son as a gift. God chose Jesus to be the King.
Why would the King come to see me? Each of us is entirely unique. We tend to see ourselves as an "oops"; we wonder why we exist. You exist because God wanted you to exist! You are like others but different, not because you are worse or better, but because each of us is handmade. You image God in an entirely unique and unrepeatable way. God wants to visit you because YOU are special to him.

Are You Like King Saul or King David? | #1253
Solemnity of Christ the King (C)
God chose Saul to be the first king of Israel, but he felt inadequate. First he ran away and hid. Then he tried to make himself look good. God chose David to be the second king of Israel. David also knew he was unworthy but he trusted God to help him.
A recent survey of US Bishops and priests reveals that many priests think their Bishop is more administrator than shepherd. Perhaps many Bishops feel inadequate so they try to make themselves look good. Others, however, see themselves as humble stewards of a gift they don't deserve.
Parents find themselves in a similar situation. Do they run away and hide, try to make themselves look good, or become humble stewards who trust in God's power? We know that no one is more powerful than Jesus. He doesn't run away and hide. He doesn't try to "save himself." He humbly submits to God's holy will. When we feel inadequate or unworthy, we should humbly serve in our King.

Ordinary Time, 33rd Sunday (C) Three little piggies all built homes. But only one home was built to last. God called us into the covenant. He will always be faithful to us. Will we be faithful to Him even when faith us inconvenient or unpopular?
Pottery is thrown and then fired in a kiln. Can we take the heat? A loaf of bread gets kneaded and left to proof. Then it gets punched down and kneaded again. The bread must rise again so it can stand tall in the heat of the oven.
The Thessalonians lived a good Christian life for a little while, but some were now becoming soft. Is your virtue solid? Do trials strengthen your faith or do they cause your faith to fall?

A Fourth Dimension | #1251
Ordinary Time, 32nd Sunday (C) November is a month dedicated to praying for the dead. Where does praying for the dead come from? Above our world is another dimension or plane of existence, what ancient people called the Spirit World. It is separate from the physical dimension but interacts with us. Modern people have gotten so focused on the physical world that they have lost almost all sense of this other dimension. Ask any group of people, though, and at least half of them can report a spiritual experience, something not explainable only by physical interactions. If does not take faith to believe that at death, people transition from this plane of existence to the spiritual plane. It's simply the most reasonable hypothesis for the available evidence.
It does, however, take faith to believe in the Resurrection of the dead. Where does this belief come from? Jews believed if they were faithful, God would bless them. But they were faithful unto death (see 2 Maccabees 7) and did not see…

The Saints Are Rooting For You | #1250
All Saints • The term "Saint" refers to those who have officially been approved for public veneration by a Vatican process, which is referred to a "canonization." The word "saint" also comes from the French word for holy. It refers to all the "holy ones" who have arrived in heaven with God forever. Even though they are out of sight, we are still connected with them.
Let's try and picture us from the point of view of the saints. They are like the fans in the stadium seats as we fight on the field. They are like older brothers and sisters waiting for their little siblings to be born into eternity.
We were made by Love and for Love. The saints just did what they were made to do; they were the best at loving God and their neighbor. Some were very mean and selfish at first but then they changed. Some changed suddenly and others changed slowly. Eventually they were ready to enter heaven.

A Heart Fit for the Kingdom | #1248
Ordinary Time, 30th Sunday (C) St. Paul was a Pharisee. He did all the right things but his heart was not in the right place. Perhaps he would go to the temple and pray, "O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity --greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector."
Then God opened his eyes to the true state of his soul. He realized he was, "a blasphemer and a persecutor and an arrogant man." I imagine that he came to the Temple and prayed, "O God, be merciful to me a sinner." He discovered that Jesus knew all his faults and failings and still wanted a friendship with him.
Paul prayerfully discerned a call to be a missionary. He traveled through Turkey, Greece and Rome inviting others to experience new life in Christ. As his life reached its end he could look back and say, "I have competed well; I have finished the race;

Stuck on "Airplane Mode" | #1247
Ordinary Time, 29th Sunday (C) What good would a cell phone be if it were always stuck on "Airplane Mode"? Cell phones were made to connect to cell towers. They can't really fulfill their purpose without a connection.
You were made to be connected to a higher power. Original sin means that we were born in airplane mode. We are so used to being disconnected that we get uncomfortable when a message comes through from the other side. No wonder we feel lost, anxious, and disconnected.
Our Gospel reading tells us to keep stubbornly asking God until we finally get what we want. I would also say it points to the need to stubbornly stay connected to God. We should use whatever means necessary to get good prayer reception. The "orans" position is kind of like those old "rabbit ear" antennas. Are You Treating Church Like a Wal-Mart? | #1246
Ordinary Time, 28th Sunday (C) Today we kick off our 2022 Stewardship Renewal. You might think that Stewardship is optional, something for those "involved parishioners" to consider. The fact of the matter is you don't get a choice to be a steward. If you are alive, you are already a steward. What kind of steward will you be: grateful, wise, and generous or grumpy, foolish, and selfish?
This annual Stewardship Renewal is an opportunity to reflect on how we have been responding to the call of stewardship. We find it helpful to reflect on three key areas:
* Time. Spend at least 1% (15 minutes) of quality time with God each day, and also time with family and friends.
* Treasure. How much am I giving, as a percent of what I receive? Am I being generous?
* Talent. A lot of us treat the church like a Wal-Mart. We show up, pay what we want and take Communion. A family is different. A family all pitches in and helps with the chores. If we are going to be a church family and not a Wal-Ma…

Faced with a Mulberry Plantation | #1245
Ordinary Time, 27th Sunday (C) Faith seems to be a key concept for Jesus and for Catholics. "If only I had more faith, like my Grandma." The Apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith. Jesus responds with a seemingly crazy rant about a mulberry tree and unprofitable servants. Whenever Jesus doesn't make sense, we need to come around and see things from his perspective.
Uprooting mulberry trees and planting them in the sea is an impossible task. You can't do it. All you need is to have faith that God will do it. When you do, amazing things will happen. People will praise you for the great job you did and you will say, "I am an unprofitable servant."
I trusted God to take care of a busy weekend and he give me the energy I needed. I trusted God with a bigger task -- raising money for a new church -- and God took care of it.
When we look forward, we sometimes see a whole mulberry plantation in front of us. But when we look behind us, we can see that God has provided for us. Faith helps…

This Could Get You Out of Hell | #1244
Ordinary Time, 26th Sunday (C) Today's parable has a simple message: rich people are going to hell. We in the United States, both globally or historically, are some of the richest people who ever lived. This parable is meant for us.
So what's the good news? First, the attitude of your heart is the most important thing, more important than how much we own or how much we give. Second, the rich man has both invitation and opportunity. He has been commanded by Jewish law to be generous. God has placed a rich man within easy reach. He does not have far to go to find invitations to be generous. Third, we are running out of chances to be generous. Respond with kindness while you are able.
Let me give you some practical advice.
* Notice the needy. Learn their names. Listen to their stories.
* See the needy as an opportunity, not an imposition.
* Give in three ways:
* To charities that serve the poor, such as Living Waters International.
* Volunteer your time to serve the poor.…

The Dishonest Steward | #1243
Ordinary Time, 25th Sunday (C) People sometimes think that Jesus is a rather straightforward teacher and the church has made everything complicated. In many cases, though, Jesus is rather confusing and the Church has tried to make things clearer. Take today's parable of the Dishonest Steward. A rich man learns that his administrator is misusing his money, so he plans to fire him. Meanwhile, the administrator takes advantage of his position to further cheat his master by reducing debts.
Is Jesus recommending dishonesty? Of course not. We must look at the change of attitude that happened. Before, the steward was only taking care of himself; now he is taking care of others in hopes that they, in turn, will take care of him.
So how does this apply to us? The rich man is God and each of us is a steward. The Master will be taking the stewardship away from you because you are going to die. When you prepare an accounting of your stewardship, you realize all the money you spent on yourself wa…

Pray and Sacrifice for the Conversion of Sinners | #1242
Ordinary Time, 24th Sunday (C) Moses prayed and God had mercy on the Israelites. St. Paul himself received mercy and wanted everyone to experience it. Sometimes I get frustrated when God has mercy seven times on others, but then I turn around and receive God's mercy for the 77th time.
The children of Fatima were invited to pray the Rosary every day and to offer sacrifices for sinners. It's not enough for us to go to heaven. We also should be praying and offering sacrifices for others. I suggest praying a daily Rosary and also sacrificing meat or doing some other penance on Fridays throughout the year.
When we begin to do penance for others we discover that we ourselves still need conversion.

The Runaway Slave | #1241
Ordinary Time, 23rd Sunday (C) Onesimus was a slave in the city of Colossae. He ran away from his master and escaped to Rome. He discovers that he still isn't free. He makes the acquaintance of a prisoner named Paul. Though on house arrest, Paul has found true freedom and peace in Jesus Christ. He converts Onesimus to Christianity and sends him back to his former master, Philemon, with a letter of introduction to smooth things over.
We were made to serve God. We wanted to be free so we ran away from our Father's house. We became slaves to our passions, to a paycheck, and to the opinions of others. When I choose to serve God, I become a co-creator. I find that inner freedom and peace that St. Paul knew even when in prison. Whom do I serve?

What Happens When We Embrace Poverty | #1240
Ordinary Time, 22nd Sunday (C)
I just got back from what has become an annual tradition, a kayak-camping trip on the Great Lakes. Paddling through the waves of Lake Michigan reminds me of how small I am. But paddling 12 or 16 miles to an island and camping there brings with it a feeling of greatness.
When have you felt poor? I don't just mean a lack of money. We experience our poverty when we don't have the answers, feel not in control, or struggle with friendships. We chase power, possessions, pleasure and popularity so we never have to feel poor. As creatures, we are fundamentally poor. When we embrace our poverty, we also experience greatness.
Let me tell you the story of the Innkeeper's Daughter. It reminds us that Jesus embraced poverty. When Jesus invites us to take the lowest place, he is inviting us to come sit down next to him. Embrace your poverty. Give to those who cannot repay you, and you too will experience greatness.

When You Are Stuck in the Mud | #1239
Ordinary Time, 20th Sunday (C) Jeremiah finds himself stuck in the mud at the bottom of a cistern. Is he angry that the people haven't listened to him? Is he hopeless? Depressed? Or does he hold out hope in God? In the end he remains faithful and God rescues him.
Jesus wants to set the earth on fire with God's love. But most of us our smoldering. How do we love like Jesus in the midst of a world grown cold and dark? We fix our eyes on Jesus and we will experience the fruits of faithfulness.

Things That Survive The Apocalypse | #1238
Ordinary Time, 19th Sunday (C) Last week I explained how all the things of this world are like so many bubbles. What, then, are the things that don't pop?
Only God IS. Everything else comes from God and depends on God. He is solid, and Faith enables us to stand on Him. Faith teaches us three things: 1) We come from God. 2) We are going to God. 3) God's loving care will lead us to him.
Today's Gospel explains two consequences oft this faith. Why store up bubbles if they are only going to pop? Share them generously and you will bless others and God, in turn, will bless you. Secondly, you should be prepared to pop at any moment. Our Lord and Master is also a servant. Serve him faithfully here and now and he will serve you in eternity.

Learning to Live in the Presence of God | #1235

I had the strange experience of a weekend off, so this homily is exclusive to the Pilgrim Priest podcast. I found the experience to be very odd timing. This past week I was speaking in a daily Mass homily about a book that I think is deeply transformative: The Way of the Heart by Henri Nouwen. The book speaks of the three steps taken by the desert fathers to enter into the love of God. They chose solitude and then silence. Finally their souls "came to rest" by entering into an interior Communion with the Almighty.
The soul of every person has a deep connection with God himself. So why do we often feel so distant from God? Getting Down with the Good Samaritan | #1234
Ordinary Time, 15th Sunday (C) The Good Samaritan is one of Jesus' best known parables. Let's look at some facts. Jerusalem sits at more than 2,400 feet above sea level, while Jericho is 800 feet _below_ sea level. One literally "went down" to Jericho. Travelers always faced the danger of "highway robbery," so it is no surprise that a lone traveler would be attacked and left for dead. What is surprising is that a Samaritan would stop to care for a Jew. Jesus tells his Jewish audience, "Go and do likewise."
This parable beautifully captures the generosity Jesus expects from his disciples. It also tells us about Jesus' love for us. Jerusalem symbolizes the "holy city", the people in communion with God. Jericho was the city Joshua encircled and captured; it symbolizes the kingdom of this world. You were made for Jesus, but the pleasures of this world have robbed you of your dignity. Leaping for Joy at the Gift of Life | #1233
Ordinary Time, 14th Sunday (C) I have lived my entire life in a world that treated the abortion as a legal right. I remember praying peacefully at the clinic in Appleton and the Medical Arts building in Green Bay. We felt like lambs among wolves because so many powerful interests were lined up on the side of legalized abortion. Years of prayerful witness to life seemed to be having no impact on the culture of death. Then both clinics suddenly closed. The 40 Days for Life moved to the Planned Parenthood clinic on Oneida Street in Green Bay. This past Friday, June 24, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey which had pretended to find a "right to abortion" hidden in the US Constitution.

Chew on This Instead of Consuming One Another | #1232
Ordinary Time, 13th Sunday (C)
These were the readings for my Mass of Thanksgiving the day after my ordination. The first reading from 1 Kings 19 looks like a call to priesthood. Elisha realizes the call is a one-way ticket; he's not coming back to farming. He offers sacrifice and he feeds his people.
In the second reading we see a different kind of feeding: "[I]f you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another." The Galatians are chewing on each other like two teenage sisters who are always mean to each other. How can we avoid consuming others as they consume us?
Jesus shows us the answer -- he refuses to bite the people that chew on him. He can do good to those who hate him because he feeds on his Father's love. Holy Trinity, Holy Family | #1231
The Most Holy Trinity (C) God created the world but he didn't do it alone. God is a "one" of community, not a one all alone. Perhaps it helps to understand the Trinity if we consider it's earthly reflection, which is the family. We participate in creation by creating human life. We image God through procreation.
A male and a female love each other so deeply that the two become one and then three-in-one. Married love is so deep, so real, that nine months later you may have to give it a name! Creating life is a team effort, not something anyone can do on their own.
Selfishness creeps into all our relationships. We ask, "What's in it for me?" When marriages become contracts, we can't help but feel cheated. When I realize how generous God has been with me, then I can give without counting the cost. And I get more back in return. Married or not, we are all called to self-giving love. The Trinity is not just a doctrine of the faith; it is also our mission.

A Double Portion of Your Spirit | #1230
The Ascension of the Lord (C) Three thoughts about the Ascension. First, Jesus didn't go as far away as we think. It's as though he walked up a few steps and sat down in the heavenly sanctuary. Second, his mission isn't over. Like Elijah passing on his spirit to Elisha, Jesus prepares to share his spirit with the Apostles. Third, we are all called to be little Christs, Christ-ians. You have been given the same Spirit that rested on Jesus. You have been called to the same mission as Jesus. If the world hasn't been transformed yet, that's on us. Peace--What It Is and Where to Find It | #1229
Easter, 6th Sunday (C) I used to think I would find peace when my problems disappeared. That turned out not to be the case. Here are four words that will help you identify the real source of peace.
Presence. "Peace is not the absence of trouble. Peace is the presence of God." We always feel peace when God is near. God is always with us but we aren't always with him. Like a child lost in the mall--stop searching so hard and peace will find you.
Power. Too many anxious Christians think that their desperate activity is the only thing preventing the world from hurtling irretrievably into disaster. Do you not know that Jesus holds all the power? Not just some of the power, or that one day he will conquer; he has all the power right now.
Plan. And he has a plan. His plan is better than yours. Our second reading reminds us that there will be a happy ending. Instead of figuring out how to make it happen, just learn to cooperate with God's plan.

Move With Purpose | #1228
Easter, 5th Sunday (C) When Deacon Andy was in basic training, they couldn't go anywhere without running. The drill sergeants were constantly yelling at them to, "Move with purpose!" So many people have no sense of purpose. Some are constantly idle. Others fill the emptiness by being constantly busy. They are moving but without purpose.
We don't have to invent a purpose for ourselves because were made to love God and love our neighbor. Jesus upgrades the second commandment; now we must love others as Christ has loved us. Life is full of many ups and downs. Challenges help you to grow in love, and the good times help you to celebrate love.
The Spirit helps us to love others as Christ has loved us. The Spirit also helps us to receive God's love. How would tomorrow look different if you lived it with purpose? I start my morning by singing the Pater Noster. What helps you to move with purpose?

Award for the Most Important Vocation Goes To... | #1227
Easter, 4th Sunday (C) Imagine attending a sporting event in the 1st century. How would people hear the good news of victory? It would spread first by word of mouth and then by messengers. Eventually someone would sit and write it down. This is exactly what we see happening in the Acts of the Apostles. The eyewitnesses spread the Good News of Jesus' victory over sin and death first by word of mouth and then by messengers. What a wonderful God we serve! He is a good shepherd who protects his sheep, leads us to life-giving waters, protects us, wipes our tears and gives us eternal life. Why are we such half-hearted servants? I first started thinking about priesthood when I was in middle school. I used to wonder, "Would I be happy as a priest?" The Shadow That Heals | #1226
Easter, 2nd Sunday • The Acts of the Apostles reports that Jesus' disciples worked many miracles. We might be skeptical, but the truth is that miracles continue today at shrines, as part of the canonization of saints, and at healing prayer services. I attended a healing prayer service and training through Encounter Ministries. I have since prayed with many people, some of whom have reported healings. What should we make of this?
Jesus works physical healings so that we will trust him with much more delicate spiritual healings. Jesus wants to give peace to the chronically anxious, hope to those in despair, and love to those who feel isolated and neglected. We are the doubting Thomases who don't realize how powerful Jesus is. We wander from one drug to another while Jesus patiently waits for us to trust him. Crazy thing is, it’s true. The miracles. The Holy Spirit. All of it. It’s All true.

Easter is the Light of Christ in You | #1225
Easter Sunday • Most of us here in church today probably think we know what Easter is all about. But if we were asked to explain it to a friend or family member, what would we say?
You have to read the entire Bible in order to really understand the Resurrection is all about. That's ok, I summarize. Remember the Garden of Eden? That's where the snake tricked Adam and Eve into eating from the wrong tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Because they ate from it, they started wearing clothes, had to deal with thorns, and were kicked out of the garden and lost access to the tree of Life.
We went from Paradise to a confusing and dangerous wilderness. But God has not forgotten his children. Once he had made all the necessary preparations he sent his only begotten son Jesus to come and rescue us. Jesus paid the price for our sins. Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross? | #1224
Good Friday • I can think of three reasons why Jesus had to die on the cross. First, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. Second, to defeat Satan, our ancient enemy. He undermines the kingdom of lies and selfishness by an act of radical trust and self-giving love. Third, Jesus is trying to win your love. We seem to be so convinced that God doesn't know me, can't love me, and couldn't possibly know what I am going through. Jesus dies a most miserable death in order to show us, "I love you this much."

The Banquet of Love | #1223
Holy Thursday • The earthly life of Jesus is coming to a dramatic end. Jesus gathers his closet friends and gives them three precious gifts: the Eucharist, the Priesthood, and the commandment to love others as Christ has loved us. Fr. George and I will wash a few feet. I challenge all the men of the parish to go home and wash their wives' feet. Then husbands and wives together wash your children's feet.
Maybe Peter objected to having his feet washed because he wasn't keen on having to wash the feet of others. "The Priesthood," says St. John Vianney, "is the love of the heart of Jesus." The Eucharist is the heart of Jesus. And the Church is the beloved disciple, the one whom Jesus loves. As we gather at this banquet of love, consider what it cost to provide this meal. Are we prepared to love others as Christ has loved us? Are we prepared to feed others as Christ has fed us? Are we willing to wash the feet of others?

When The Rooster Crows for You | #1222
Palm Sunday (C) The ashes we received on our foreheads said, "I will die with Christ. The pleasures and treasures of this world are like ashes compared to the inestimable value of friendship with Jesus." As Lent went on, however, we discovered we were more attached than we realized. We are unfortunately like Jesus' disciples who said, "We will die with you," then all ran away.
How is it that Jesus remained faithful when neither we nor the disciples were able to remain faithful? First, Jesus loves you more than he loves himself. Second, Jesus relies on his Father. The gift of life with Christ is worth any suffering, any sacrifice. Jesus wants you; "The Master has need of you." Pray for the grace to love Jesus more than you love yourself. Pray for the grace to rely on the Father and not on your own strength. Jesus will help us to die with Him so that we can also rise with Him.

Are You Feeling Surrounded by Hostile Voices? | #1221
Lent, 5th Sunday (C) The Gospel of the woman caught in adultery is remarkably similar to the parable of the prodigal son. The woman is surrounded by accusers. Jesus doesn't speak. Finally he says just one sentence that totally unmasks their hypocrisy. One by one, the voices become silent.
The women is left face to face with Jesus -- the sinful one with the sinless one. She expects condemnation. Instead Jesus offers her new life.
St. Paul himself experienced new life in a relationship with Christ. Do you find yourself surrounded by hostile and accusing voices? Turn to Jesus. Let him part the waters and lead you to freedom.

I Was Not Expecting That | #1220
Lent, 4th Sunday (C) Each time I hear the prodigal son story I notice something new. One of my favorite moments was a re-telling of the story with children preparing for their first Confession. As the child came back up the aisle, the father scooped him up into a big embrace. The child shook his head and said, "I was not expecting that!" The Father's love never ceases to surprise us; it's like rose vestments on Laetare Sunday.
Our first reading gives a new meaning to this parable. It reminds us that our life is a journey back to the Father's house. We need to learn to let go of the pleasures of this life and to choose to cling to the Father's love for us. We are clothed in the robe that is Jesus Christ and we learn to love others as the Father loves us. Others should say of our love, "I was not expecting that!"

What You Can Do to Stop World War III | #1219
Lent, 2nd Sunday (C) Some people are concerned that the conflict in Ukraine might usher in World War III. We can take comfort in the message on Our Lady of Fatima, which had two main points:
* Despite appearances to the contrary, God is still in charge. He offers evil people a chance to repent, and He can and will bring good out of evil. Do not be afraid!
* We are each being called to conversion of heart. God sees, hears, and knows well what we are suffering. Our prayers and sufferings matter and they help save the world.
We are all waiting for Mr. Putin to have a change of heart, but God is waiting for you to have a change of heart. Don't look elsewhere and say, "Those people need to repent." God has been investing in you for your entire life; is he getting a good return on his investment? We are the ones who have been given one more year. It's time to start bearing fruit.

Standing Firm on the Road to the Cross | #1218
Lent, 2nd Sunday (C) Moses and Elijah appear to Jesus on a mountain top to help him stand firm. The voice from heaven reminds Jesus to remain in his Father's love.
The apostles are not standing firm. They are, in fact, lying down. God gives them two gifts to help them stand firm: First, they see Jesus radiant with glory of God. Second, they are told to listen to Jesus. Listening to Jesus' voice and doing God's will helps us to stand on solid rock. When we accepted ashes on our foreheads, we accepted dying with Christ. God wants to remind us that the cross and sacrifice lead to the glory of the Resurrection
Abram has to stand firm through a terrifying darkness in order to make a covenant with God. St. Paul encourages the Philippians to stand firm as they experience the cross. Are you standing firm in your Lenten sacrifices? Spend time in prayer every day, then come to the Holy Mountain that is Sunday Mass. May God help you to stand firm this week.

The Power to Turn Temptations into Triumphs | #1217
Lent, 1st Sunday (C)
Have you faced temptations this first week of Lent? You can take comfort knowing that even Our Lord was tempted! Temptations are not sins until we act with our wills. Every year we read about Jesus' temptation, but this year we are also given a reading about first fruits. This teaches us that the proper attitude of a creature is to receive from its creator and then give back again.
The devil tempts us to grasp instead of receive and to keep for ourselves instead of giving back. Picture little kids fighting over the same toy. We try to grasp what doesn't belong to us and then cling to it.
Now let's learn from Jesus. First, Jesus experiences his Father's love for him. Then he goes out into the desert. The devil wants to put a wedge between him and God. Jesus relies on God's power and not on his own wisdom or strength. We must, also, rely on God. And his power is closer than you think!

New Life from the Ashes | #1216
Ash Wednesday • Why do we put ashes on our foreheads?
Ashes are a sign of death. The Jews had multiple experiences of their city being destroyed. By sitting in the ashes, they would show God they had learned their lesson before the destruction happened, and so hopefully avert it. Most of the time we try to look good. But today we admit: "I'm a filthy sinner. And I'm going to die because of my sins."
Ashes are also a source of new life. Fires burn away all the junk. New growth springs up after a fire. Our ashes come from the Palm Sunday palms. They remind us of the victory Jesus won over both sin and death. Accepting the ashes means that I am choosing voluntarily to die with Jesus so that I can also rise with him to new life.

What's Toxic is not Masculinity | #1215

Should we abolish the priesthood? Should we abolish the police? How can we stop "toxic masculinity"?
The police, along with doctors, lawyers, clergy, and soldiers, were known as "professions." They are given special knowledge and privileges and they play by special rules. The word profession comes from the oath one took when assuming one of these roles. The person taking on the roll had to promise before God and society that they would use these special powers for the good of others (their congregation, patients, clients, citizens) and not for their own selfish benefit.
Our culture has changed. We now take it for granted that we're all in it for ourselves. We have a hard time believing that police or clergy, or any of the other professions are really living for others.
Think of our image of manhood. Manhood achieves its true purpose in protecting and providing for others who are more vulnerable. Your masculinity is a gift and it is meant to be given aw…

Ordinary Time, 7th Sunday (C) We continue our journey through Luke chapter 6. Today Jesus teaches the Golden Rule and a whole lot more! Jesus wants his followers to be more than "good people"; we are called to be "God's people." God's people are kind and merciful; they love their enemies and give generously just as God does. Does this sound impossible for you?
King David shows that we can fulfill this command. There are three reasons why David doesn't kill Saul when he gets the chance: 1) David trusts God to protect him. 2) David trusts God to provide for him. 3) David refuses to treat Saul in the way that Saul treats him.
This third one is the key to understanding what Jesus is asking of us. Jesus knows that we will experience evil at the hands of others. He wants us to break the cycle of evil. "Hurt people hurt people." People who act in hurtful ways have often experienced hurt. Forgiveness is the key that lets us escape the cycle of hurt.

Let's Talk About Death | #1213
Ordinary Time, 6th Sunday (C) "Memento mori" (remember death) is more than just a nice motto. Wise people in every century have lived well by keeping their end in view. Modern Americans see death as some kind of failure. We refuse to talk about it, using words like "passed away" to avoid having to even say the word. Too many people opt for no service, scatter the ashes, or give them out like party favors. All of this is a symptom of death denial.
The Bible tells us that death was not originally part of creation. Death entered the world along with sin. We are right to feel repelled by death. However, death now plays an important role. We should accept our death and face this reality with courage. Jesus is terrified of death, as we all are, but with God's help he accepts it with courage.

Ordinary Time, 5th Sunday (C) The prophet Isaiah, St. Paul, and St. Peter all have the same experience. God calls them, purifies them, and sends them on mission. The call of God, however, is not fundamentally a call to go somewhere or do something. It is a call to be with him. You too have been called to Mass, purified, and will then be sent back out on mission. Be with God this week.

Come On In and Warm Up | #1211
Ordinary Time, 4th Sunday (C) No doubt you heard today's second reading at a wedding or two. 1 Corinthians 13 was actually addressed to a Christian community. The Christians of Corinth are comparing their spiritual gifts. St. Paul wants to remind them, and us, that the greatest gift is love.
This reading can be used as a kind of Examination of Conscience. We can put our name into the reading and see how we are doing. And that's when we realize: I am not always patient, kind... and my love most certainly does fail. Where did St. Paul get all this?
He himself had experienced a conversion. He knows true love because he knows Jesus. St. Paul is describing Jesus to us. No one else can love up to this standard. We Christians are caught between the warmth of God's love and the coldness of the world. Unfortunately, many of us are being pulled into the cold dark world. Here are my top five suggestions to help you move you closer to the love of Jesus:

Baptized In The Holy Spirit | #1209
The Baptism of the Lord (C) The moment of Jesus' Baptism changed his life. If he had not been Baptized, there may have never been Easter. The Father says to him, "Son I love you and I'm proud of you." Even Jesus needed to hear his Father say these words. How much more do our children need to hear their parents say these words.
Jesus had basically accomplished nothing at this point, and yet his Father was still proud of him. We are also God's beloved children and our heavenly Father is proud of us. Yes, we have failed and made mistakes. God's answer was not to give up on you, but instead to send his one perfect Son to sacrifice himself for you. Jesus gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his own, eager to do what is good.

The Gift That Changes Us | #1208
The Epiphany of the Lord • The Bible has two separate infancy narratives of Jesus: Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2. Luke's shepherds are poor Jews of ill repute. Matthew's magi are the upper crust of the Persian-Chaldean culture. Gentiles, rich, highly educated and esteemed -- the polar opposite of Jewish shepherds. They show us that the Christ Child is a gift to all peoples.
The magi were a kind of priestly class who gazed at the stars and teased out the secrets of the universe, much like scientists do today. Their study of the natural world pointed them to the infant King. Science gets them in the neighborhood, but in order to meet him they have to turn to Divine revelation.
The three gifts that they lay at the feet of the Child reveal to us secrets about his identity: gold for the true King, frankincense for the true God, and myrrh for the perfect Sacrifice.
You, too, are a gift, and you have gifts for Jesus. You give him your gold when you are a wise and generous steward of your mate…

Instead of preparing for a covenant, modern consumer couples are preparing themselves for a contract. They start the free trial of each other for months or years until finally, two kids into the relationship, they decide to sign on the bottom line. But now they have years of practice giving some, but holding some back from each other. The magic of marriage only happens when we give ourselves completely.
We are supposed to learn this from our parents and grandparents. But too often now, children are not actually raised by their parents. They are raised by daycare, school teachers, and the state. A Gift to You from God | #1206
Christmas (The Nativity of Our Lord) • If God left a gift for you, what would it be: A toy? A job for daddy? The answers to a test? Courage? A cure for cancer? Socks? We open the box and we find: Baby Jesus!
God heard all of your prayers and he sent you the best possible gift. We might think that courage, a cure for cancer, or even socks are a better gift that the Christ Child. But this gift answers the deepest desires of the human heart. Perhaps God didn't cure grandpa's cancer, but he will be with you and with grandpa. God gives us the gift of Emmanuel, himself with us.
Did you get a gift for the birthday boy? How often we leave Jesus out of our family time, our daily lives, our Sunday plans, even our Christmas plans! Three Keys to Prepare for Jesus | #1205
Advent, 4th Sunday (C) Last week, Deacon Andy talked about how we could find Joy even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Today I want to talk about Peace. We don't find peace on special at Wal-Mart. So where do we find peace?
We might assume that peace happens when we are in a peaceful place, like drinking hot cocoa and watching the snow fall. But then we whip out our cell phones to check the sports scores, and we realize that we don't have peace within us. When we are in the right place, doing the right thing, that is one area where we can find peace. We also find peace when we sort out a relationship issue and get it to a good place.
St. Augustine famously said, "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You." Other authors have talked about a "God-shaped hole" within us that swallows everything until it settles on a relationship with God. Escape the Collapsing Mine | #1204
Advent, 3rd Sunday (C) On August 5, 2010, the San José Mine near Copiapó, Chile, suffered a major collapse. Miners close to the surface were able to escape, but 33 miners were trapped deep underground. Rescue operations began immediately. It took 17 days to drill a hole into the underground refuge. All the men were alive and well and they had just run out of rations. Another, larger hole as drilled into the mine. The miners helped in their own rescue by sharing information and clearing debris. A rescue capsule just 54 cm (21 in) in diameter was used the extract them. On the first full trip it lowered a rescuer down into the mine. This man would prepare each miner for their ascent. He was the last to leave.

When God created the world, he made Adam and Eve like tame animals. They trusted God and he cared for them. When they sinned, they went feral. Now we tend to look out for ourselves, hurt each other, and run from God when he comes looking for us. We think we belong to no one. This is original sin in a nutshell.

We have been led into captivity by our sins. The Enemy tricked Adam and Eve into not trusting God and submitting themselves as humble stewards. They tried to be the masters and became slaves. The enemy is active in your life, too. He preys on your hurts and fears and offers you selfish pleasures. You try to become the master and you end up being a slave.

Advent Lessons from a Deer Hunter | #1201
Advent, 1st Sunday (C) Many hunters tell me they pray better in a tree stand than in church. Honestly, I believe them. Creation is the first sacrament. It speaks to us of God's loving presence, but we have forgotten how to listen. We have become, "drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life," and we don't see the signs of God's love for us.
We can learn two lessons from deer hunters. They scout in advance, looking for clues that tell them where the deer are. They position a tree stand in just the right place. They wake up early so they can be in position when the deer go for Starbucks, to, um... "harvest" a big buck.
Just like a good deer hunter, we need to pick the right place and the right time to pray. Make yourself a dedicated prayer corner, prayer room, or prayer chair. Set a time that works for you.
Secondly, we need to be reading the signs that God puts all around us. God exists in all places and all times; he can meet you in any place and any time.…

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (B) You are running out of sunsets. There are no sunsets in Heaven, and there is only a finite number of sunsets between this one and the last one. We can learn a big lesson from this simple truth.
We often focus our attention on the next big thing in our lives: Christmas, family vacation, getting a driver's license, graduating college, retirement, etc. It's not bad to focus on these but we should be focused on two bigger things. First, Jesus is the true King and his future Kingdom is already assured. In fact, his Kingdom is already present. Second, if I want to be part of his eternal Kingdom, I need serve my King today.
We know that the Kingdom of God is a kingdom of Truth and Love. Am I living my life according to truth and love? How to Trick God Into Giving You More | #1151
Ordinary Time, 32nd Sunday (B) People are watching as a widow puts in the bare minimum. Jesus is also watching, but he's watching not for the size of the gift, but the generosity of heart. You may find this hard to believe but Stewardship Commitment Sunday is not about guilting you into giving more. We are looking for more, but in two different senses:
* More intentional. You aren't going to pray regularly if you're not being intentional about how and when you pray. Are you serving in the best way possible? Have you talked to your spouse about how much you plan to give? We should be intentional about our giving.
* More love. It's ok to give and serve because we feel obligated, but it's better to give and serve as an act of love. Time is about loving God, Talent is about loving your neighbor, and Treasure is about not loving money.

Praying for the Dead Can Strengthen Our Faith, Hope, and Love | #1150
All Souls Day • Those who have died are not truly separated from us; we remain united as members of the Body of Christ. We are on a journey together to eternal life, and we need to keep the dead in our hearts and in our prayers. I hope that celebrating All Souls together, and remembering the 75 souls who have passed from our parishes, will help you in three ways:
* Increase your FAITH in Jesus, risen from the dead, judge of the living and the dead, and giver of Eternal life to all His faithful ones.
* Increase your HOPE in God's mercy. Christian hope is not, "I hope something good happens." We know for certain that the dead will rise and we pray that we, too, would be in their number. God wants to save all his children and all we need to do is say "Yes", and not "No", to God's plan.
