Hey everyone, if you own an e-commerce website or if you're an e-com business, today's your lucky day. Today, I'm going to share some personalizations that are absolutely radically going to help you to increase conversions and increase sales. It's not really a secret that personalization is the key to success if you're an e-commerce business. I actually recently saw some research that shows that about 71% of online shoppers express some level of frustration or angst when their shopping experience isn't personalized. And 33% of customers have actually stopped, canceled the relationship, walked away from a company altogether as a result of not personalizing the experience for them. Those are big numbers. That means literally if you're not doing this right, you could be frustrating two-thirds of your customers and losing a third of them. So if you're looking into the why is this episode important, now you know.
So first of all, let's talk about what is personalization. Personalization is basically when you're showing your customers offers and content that's tailored towards them, their needs, where they are in their buying journey specifically. So that could be, for example, product recommendations, blog posts. It could even extend off of your website and into your email campaigns, by the way. And the way that you personalize the user experience is by leveraging, extracting their data, and using it to understand everyone's desires. So for example, past purchases can be used to improve future product recommendations, things like that.
So here's pro-tip number one if you have an e-commerce business, target return customers. People who have already visited, be it customers or not customers, will already have a browsing history that you can leverage to create specific content for them. For example, recently viewed items. You might even think about showing them items that people with other similar interests also viewed inside of your store. And of course, another great idea is to show complementing category. So for example, if someone came in to buy golf clubs, then you might present other products like golf shoes, for example. And while you're at it, target new customers. You can do this by giving a pop-up offer, for example, that gives them a 10% discount off their first order.
Pro-tip number two, consider using personalized pop-ups. Now, if you don't know what a pop-up is, a pop-up is when you come to a website, and up on top of the website an offer or a promotion pops up. Now, studies have shown that pop-ups are the most hated advertising techniques on the web. But like anything else, like the reason people don't like salespeople a lot of times, it's not that they hate salespeople, they don't like people who do it poorly. Same thing with pop-ups. You don't necessarily hate the pop-ups. It's when it's done obtrusively or too frequently.
But here are just a few of the benefits of using pop-ups. One, you can make your offers more visible by just grabbing their attention. Two, you can be as personalized and customized as you want in order to reflect your brand. You can get control of a new user's first impression by using the right message and tone. And they have an average conversion rate of a little over 3%. That's a lot of good reasons to be using pop-ups and to personalize them. And again, to personalize these pop-ups, do it by leveraging the data that you have. So if they have been shopping in your store and they came to buy a motorcycle jacket, maybe your pop-up gives them a discount on a new motorcycle helmet. So be creative, be strategic, be tactical.
Pro-tip number three, and this one's a little more advanced, think about adjusting your URL accordingly to the interests of your visitors. So for example, if a specific user has already been to your website or your online store several times, and typically they head straight towards the men's section, you might assume that the shopper is either a man or shops for men most of the time. So what you can do is the next time they come back and they type in the URL to your homepage, think about redirecting them to the men section since that's where they seem to like to go most of the time anyway. And to pull this off, by the way, obviously, there are plugins out there depending on which platform you're using. One I've seen is called Poptin, spelled P-O-P-T-I-N. You can check that out.
And the fourth and last pro tip I'll give you to my e-commerce friends out there is thinking about adjusting your content to match your visitors' locations. So let's just say you have a national brand and you have customers that are in LA and you have customers that are in Alaska. It would probably, assuming you're selling clothing or apparel, to adjust the content that you display to your LA customers to be more summer-type clothing, as opposed to your customers who might be purchasing from you in Alaska. You might not want to be showing them flip-flops and cargo shorts. So adjust your content to match where your customers are actually browsing and buying your products.
