She loves being a part of this wonderful peer support organization. She is a mom and grandmother, great-grandmother, loves playing guitar and writing songs about recovery. She is a WRAP Facilitator, having been trained in the first class in Virginia in 2004. She enjoys being a trainer of the Virginia Certified Peer Recovery Specialist Training and feels blessed to have facilitated 18 Peer Recovery Specialist Trainings since 2012. She is an eCPR Facilitator, Peer Whole Health & Resiliency Facilitator and most recently become a Certified Personal Medicine Coach through Pat Deegan and Associates. He identifies as someone with lived mental health experience. He previously spent twelve years working with Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services, in Glen Allen, Virginia. David worked with the Emergency Services Team and at the Henrico County Crisis Receiving Center for eight of those years. He supported persons with lived mental health and substance use experience, and their families, by providing empathy, direct support, recovery education, and community resource education. David was also a member of the STAR (Services To Aid Recovery) Team, which is a proactive, multi-disciplinary, mobile response to citizens needing mental health intervention. He is a certified Crisis Intervention Team Instructor, a certified WRAP Facilitator, a Mental Health First Aid Trainer, and a Virginia DBHDS Peer Recovery Specialist Trainer. He continues to be a presenter at local, state, and national mental health conferences and workshops. A graduate of Campbell University, David pursued additional Masters’ education with Pastoral Care and Counseling. David is also a 2007 graduate of the Virginia Human Services Training Program, which prepared him for work in the Peer Specialist field. David has spent over 35 years in the Human Services field with faith-based, non-profit, private, and government organizations. Trauma-Informed Peer Support with Cheryl DeHaven About the Episode Date: April 24, 2020 Episode 1: Trauma-Informed Peer Support with Cheryl DeHaven Summary Trauma-informed peer support allows us the opportunity to build the peer relationship in a way that keeps both the individual and the peer recovery specialist (PRS) who is offering support safe. This also allows PRS to set boundaries, so that we can stay in our lane as peer recovery specialists and not drift into dialogue that needs clinical support versus the non-clinical support that peer recovery specialists are trained to provide. First, as a person utilizing behavioral health services throughout her adult life, secondly, as a professional leader in the development of peer support and recovery services within local, state and national organizations. Her professional journey took off in 2003, when she became a national trainer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness’ signature program “In Our Own Voice.” In 2007, she graduated from Old Dominion University, BS in Human Services Counseling. In 2016, she became a Virginia Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and most recently, a DBHDS Peer Recovery Specialist trainer.
