EP030: The 3 Filters
In this episode I’ll talk about the 3 filters I use to observe a horse or horse and rider. This is especially helpful when I meet a new horse and rider. It helps me see the big picture so I can best know how to help them. Diagnosing an issue can be challenging because, as many of you know, the real problem is not always the problem that shows up the most obvious. These 3 filters help you take the myriad of infinite issues you may be experiencing, and boils it down to 3 main categories… it’s a starting point for problem-solving, and it is a blueprint for horse development.   About the Host: Karen Rohlf, author and creator of Dressage Naturally, is an internationally recognized clinician who is changing the equestrian educational paradigm. She teaches students of all disciplines and levels from around the world in her clinics and the Dressage Naturally virtual programs. What should you eat when trying to get pregnant?
It’s episode 2 of the relaunched pod! This week we’re talking about what to eat when you’re trying to conceive. This can be so overwhelming, and we want to make it easy for you to understand all you need to know. So, we’re chatting to the lovely Ro Huntriss who is a registered fertility dietician. On the pod we’ve spoken to a fair few people who know what they’re talking about when it comes to fertility and nutrition, but dieticians work slightly differently. Their focus is very much on evidence-based practice and their training to become a dietician involves clinical placements and training to support people with co-existing medical conditions. So, basically they follow the medical model such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists etc. So, where do you start with nutrition when trying to conceive? Ro recommends that you consider your own diet and look at the changes that you feel will make your diet healthier. Keeping a food diary is a great thing to do and can give you a really good picture on what kind of foods you’re eating and where you might need to make some changes. Let’s talk about egg health. It takes around 3 months to influence the health of the egg and some of the nutrients to include are folate (folic acid) - to help reduce the risk of neural tube defect but also help to improve egg development and quality. Omega 3 - in oily fish or as a supplement can play a huge part in improving egg quality. Antioxidants – from fruits, veg, wholegrains, nuts, seeds and even in meat. Ro also shares with us her recommendations for sperm health and how a Mediterranean diet and antioxidants are particularly useful such as vitamin C, E, Zinc, Selenium and folate. We get the low down on whether you should go gluten and diary free – Ro makes it really clear that unless you’re a diagnosed coeliac, it is not recommended to be gluten free to support fertility as there is not the evidence to suggest that this is necessary. Wholegrain is an important part of our diet and needs to be included. If you’re worried you might be intolerant to gluten, ask your GP for a test before removing out of your diet to be sure. With regards to dairy Ro doesn’t recommend cutting it out unless necessary and if you do, make sure you get your plant based dairy alternatives in. We frequently talk about the importance of weight when trying to conceive and probably focus more on being overweight, however being underweight is also a consideration when it comes to fertility. Having a low BMI can cause irregular cycles and therefore ovulatory disorders. Ro recommends that if you’re underweight include olive oil, nuts, seeds and avocado to your diet. Is it sensible to follow a vegan diet when trying to conceive? Ro says yes but encourages you to have a review with a dietician or nutritionist if you’re struggling to conceive. What about restrictive diets? Ro discourages this as these low-calorie diets are so restrictive and research shows that people that follows these diets don’t get the best outcomes. We’ll be catching up with Ro in the very near future to chat about preparing for IVF but in the meantime, you can find more about Ro here: Ro Huntriss: https://dietitianro.co.uk The Fertility Food Formula: https://fertilitydietitianuk.teachable.com/p/food-and-fuel-for-fertility-an-online-fertility-nutrition-course Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fertility.dietitian.uk/ Registered nutritionists   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Connection Between Bodily Sensation & The Emotional Brain
It’s a raw, uncut, unedited podcast for you this week! I had planned to release a different episode, but we made an executive decision to hold that off for a couple of weeks’ time (super excited to bring that to you then!). In the meantime, I had two options: * Leave the podcast for this week and have a two-week gap * Roll with whatever came up even if I didn’t have time to present it as a perfect package Given this is here with you now, I have gone with the latter. So here it is for you, my Sunday morning conversation around the nature of sensation and the relationship it has with our emotional brain and motor patterns and function (isn’t this what everyone muses over when they are having their Sunday morning coffee?). What’s the deal with all of that? Here’s a brief breakdown. Many of us find ourselves in groundhog day experiences with our horses based on certain feelings or sensations that arise in the body. Whilst those sensations can feel concrete and absolute, they are inherently subjective. Think of them as a mash-up of everything you have thought, experienced, or been told in relation to a similar experience in the past. What then happens is that our body registers a certain feeling in response to the environment, and we label that feeling based on something that has happened in the past. That labeling or thought process then triggers a motor response and we find ourselves acting out the same experiences on a repetitive loop. In order to move away from that, there are some key things we need to consider: * Our associations with sensation and discomfort in the body as a whole, and the decoupling of stories and labels around them * The secondary gain we experience from what we would primarily understand as negative behavior or experience * The true meaning of sensation and how we can use that to bring ourselves more into the present We discuss all this and more in this episode!

Part Two: The Murder of Ellie May Butler (Explicit)
On Monday the 28th of October, 2013, at around 3:45pm, a frantic 999 call was placed to the London Ambulance Service in regards to a 6-year-old child who was not breathing and turning blue. Her parents screamed at the operator to hurry, insisting that they had no idea what had happened. This final episode follows on from part one, and the events that occurred after Ellie’s death, including the shocking revelations that proved complete and utter failure by all authorities involved. This episode contains details of child abuse resulting in murder that many people will find distressing. Listener discretion is advised.
